Phones made before 2018 cannot use eSIM. The e-sim chip must be built into the device during manufacturing and no software update can add it later. Yes. Google says every Pixel 4 and later works with eSIM, though older models have limits. A Pixel 3a bought with Verizon or in Japan has no eSIM. Neither does a Pixel 3 bought in Australia, Taiwan or Japan, or one sold by a US or Canadian carrier other than Sprint or Google Fi. On the Pixel 2, only phones bought with Google Fi service support eSIM. Pixel 7, Pixel 7 Pro and later can run two eSIMs at once if your carrier allows it. The Honor 200 Lite does not support eSIM. Honor limits eSIM to select flagship models sold outside China. Budget and mid-range Honor handsets, including the 200 Lite, use a physical SIM card only. The Honor 50 does not support eSIM in most markets. Honor reserves embedded SIM hardware for select high-end models outside China. The Honor 50 uses a physical dual SIM tray. iPhone 13 supports eSIM across all four models: iPhone 13, 13 mini, 13 Pro, and 13 Pro Max. Apple made the 13 series the first to run two active eSIMs without a physical SIM card. The LG V40 ThinQ does not support eSIM. LG never added eSIM hardware to the V40 or any model in the V series. LG left the smartphone market in 2021, so no future update will add eSIM support. To use a HelloRoam travel plan, you need a phone with eSIM hardware from Apple, Samsung, Google, or another supported brand on our list.
Checking eSIM compatibility takes under a minute. On iPhone, go to Settings, then General, then About, and look for an EID number. On Android, dial *#06# and check whether an EID appears next to your IMEI. You can also go to Settings, then About Phone, then Status. The LG V60 ThinQ does not support eSIM. LG did not include the embedded SIM chip in the V60 or any other model in its V series. LG stopped making smartphones in 2021, so no future software update can change this. If you need data on a trip to the US, Canada, or Japan, you need a phone from Apple, Samsung, Google, or another brand on the eSIM supported phones list.

An eSIM is not transferable to a new phone once it is installed. If you want to move your plan to a new device, you cannot copy the profile directly. If it hasn't connected to a network your plan covers abroad, email help@helloroam.com and we can issue a new eSIM for your new phone; once connected, we can't, and its code can't be reused. An installed HelloRoam eSIM cannot be moved straight across to a different iPhone, since the profile stays linked to the phone you installed it on. The iPhone SIM chip is an embedded eSIM chip soldered to the logic board during manufacturing. It replaces the removable SIM card tray on newer iPhones. The chip stores multiple eSIM profiles that you download by scanning a QR code. On iPhones sold in the US from the iPhone 14 onwards, the physical SIM tray is removed entirely. You can verify your phone has the eSIM chip by dialing *#06#: an EID number listed alongside your IMEI confirms the chip is present.
To remove a SIM card from an iPhone with a physical tray (iPhone 13 and earlier in most markets): insert the SIM ejector tool or a small paper clip into the pinhole on the side of the phone and press until the tray pops out. Slide the tray out and lift the nano-SIM by its edges. For iPhone 14 US models there is no tray as these phones are eSIM-only. iPhones sold in Ireland and the rest of Europe retain the physical SIM tray on all models including the 14 and 15 series, so you can still remove the SIM normally.
