Switch off mobile data on your UK SIM (EE, O2, Vodafone, or Three) whilst abroad to avoid being charged roaming fees by your home network. Your British number stays active so contacts can still reach you as normal.
Most modern eSIM compatible phones store two or more eSIM profiles at once. iPhones from the XS (2018) onward, Samsung Galaxy S20 and later, and Google Pixel 3 and later all support multiple profiles held at the same time. The Samsung Galaxy M53 does not support eSIM. It has two physical nano-SIM slots but no embedded eSIM chip. eSIM support in the Samsung range starts with the Galaxy S20 series and newer flagship models. To check your own handset, go to Settings, then Connections, then SIM card manager. If there is no eSIM option listed, your phone uses physical SIM cards only and is not eSIM compatible.
Adding a second eSIM to an iPhone takes roughly 2 minutes. Open Settings and tap Mobile Service, then Add eSIM, and scan the QR code that HelloRoam sends to your email after purchase. iPhones from the XS (2018) onward support several eSIM profiles stored at once. The Hola browser is a VPN-type browser with a well-documented security history worth knowing about before you rely on it abroad. Its free model routes traffic through other users' devices and connections, which creates real privacy risks.
