What Is an eSIM Card? eSIM Explained
An eSIM is a digital SIM card built into your phone that gives you instant cellular data in 186+ countries without swapping a physical card. Unlike a removable SIM, the embedded chip is soldered into your phone's motherboard and stores carrier profiles in software. Also written as e SIM or e-sim, it connects you to cellular networks for calls, SMS texts, and mobile data with no card to insert, lose, or swap at the airport. What is cellular? Cellular is the mobile network technology (4G LTE or 5G) that carries your calls and internet data, the same technology a physical SIM card uses.
The GSMA, the industry body that manages the SGP.22 eSIM standard, defines how phones store and switch carrier profiles wirelessly. This technology is also called a virtual SIM or digital SIM card because the entire profile lives in software. Most phones released after 2018 have this chip built in. Compatible models include iPhones (XS through iPhone 16), Samsung Galaxy devices (S20 through Galaxy S25), and Google Pixels (3 through Pixel 9). HelloRoam, built by FutureSyncs Ltd (UK Companies House #15950168), helps UK travellers skip data roaming charges, avoid the physical SIM card swap at the airport, and get online the moment they land.(Source: GSMA SGP.22 eSIM Specification)
How Does an eSIM Work? (iPhone and Android Setup)
An eSIM works by using built-in software to download and store a cellular carrier profile on your phone. Once active, you connect to mobile networks, make calls, send texts, and use cellular data (mobile internet used by your phone for browsing, streaming, and apps), the same as a physical SIM card. How does an eSIM work on iPhone? On compatible models (XS and newer), go to Settings, Mobile Data, Add eSIM. How does it work on Android? The steps are nearly the same: Settings, Network and internet, SIM manager, Add eSIM. Most compatible phones released after 2018 support this feature. Getting started takes about 5 minutes: buy an eSIM plan, open your confirmation email, and scan the QR code. Your physical SIM card stays in place the whole time. You can run both at once in dual SIM mode, with the embedded profile handling cellular data and your regular SIM keeping your home number active. What is eSIM on iPhone? It works the same way: Settings, Mobile Data, Add eSIM, scan the QR code. You can store multiple profiles and switch between them at any time. On the US iPhone 14 and later, Apple removed the physical SIM tray entirely, making those models eSIM-only.

Why eSIM Plans Beat Data Roaming: Key Advantages Explained
eSIM Disadvantages to Know Before You Buy
eSIM plans give you local cellular data rates without data roaming charges. You skip the SIM card hunt at the airport, activate on the go, and manage everything from your phone. Here's what you gain by switching from a physical SIM card to a pay-as-you-go plan from HelloRoam.
No bill shock when you land
Skip the airport SIM kiosk entirely. An eSIM connects your handset to local carriers the moment you land, giving you instant data at local network speeds with no extra charges from EE, Vodafone, O2, or Three.
Multiple profiles, one handset
Your phone can hold multiple eSIM profiles at once. Switch between networks or numbers without hunting for a SIM ejector pin or a tiny plastic card.
Pay for what you need
Off to Tenerife for a fortnight? Buy a 14-day plan rather than a rolling monthly contract. Pay for exactly what your holiday needs and not a penny more.
Frees up space inside your handset
Without a physical SIM tray to accommodate, manufacturers can use that space for a bigger battery or better camera hardware.
Cannot be lost or stolen
Had your bag nicked in Barcelona or left your jacket at Heathrow? Your eSIM stays locked inside the handset. It cannot be removed, stolen, or lost down the back of a seat.
Less plastic waste
One fewer piece of plastic in landfill each time you travel. Choosing an eSIM over a disposable SIM card is a sensible, straightforward step towards greener travel.

Not sure if your handset supports eSIM?
Most phones released after 2019 support eSIM, including iPhone XS through iPhone 16, Samsung Galaxy S20 through Galaxy S25, and Google Pixel 3 through Pixel 9. The technology is safe to use and doesn't affect your physical SIM card or phone number. Many phones can store 8 or more profiles at once. Check your handset before you book your holiday.
Check CompatibilityeSIM vs SIM Card: What Is the Difference?
A SIM card is a small physical chip that connects your phone to a cellular network. An eSIM is an embedded SIM that does the same job digitally, without a removable card. Physical SIM vs eSIM: both handle calls, texts (SMS), and cellular data. The digital version wins on flexibility, setup speed, and security. An e SIM is also called a virtual SIM or digital SIM card because the carrier profile lives in software, not on a removable chip.
eSIM vs Data Roaming: How Much Can You Save?
EE charges around £6 per day for data roaming in Europe. Vodafone charges £6.85 per day. O2 charges £3.50 per day within the EU, as of April 2026. Those rates apply even after Brexit ended free EU roaming in January 2022. HelloRoam e SIM plans come in well below all three figures, with no daily cap surprises. An e-sim for international travel costs a fraction of what UK carriers charge for even a single day of roaming abroad.

Frequently Asked eSIM Questions
An eSIM carries the same security as a physical SIM card, plus some additional protections. The embedded profile can't be physically removed, stolen, or cloned, as it's soldered into your phone's motherboard. The GSMA SGP.22 standard governs how profiles are downloaded and verified. Your device's biometric lock (Face ID or fingerprint) adds a layer of protection that a removable nano SIM doesn't have. The only meaningful risk is losing access if your phone is stolen and factory reset, but that applies equally to a physical SIM. HelloRoam profiles are tied to your account, so our support team can issue a replacement via WhatsApp if needed.
HelloRoam travel eSIMs are data-only and don't assign you a new phone number. Your existing number stays on your physical SIM card for calls and texts whilst your travel plan handles mobile data at local rates. This means your UK mobile number stays active on EE, Vodafone, O2, or Three throughout your trip. For calls over your data connection, use apps like WhatsApp, FaceTime, or Zoom. If you need a second number for voice calls abroad, you'd need a separate voice eSIM from a local carrier, which is a different product from a travel data plan.
HelloRoam eSIM plans support hotspot and tethering on most compatible phones. Turn on Personal Hotspot in your phone settings to share your travel data with a laptop, tablet, or another device. Bear in mind that hotspot usage burns through data faster than regular browsing. Streaming video or downloading large files through a hotspot can use 1 to 2GB per hour. If you plan to tether regularly, pick a larger data package or an unlimited option to avoid running out mid-trip.
Data roaming is when your phone uses a foreign mobile network abroad and your UK carrier charges you for that usage. An e SIM removes this problem. You buy a plan online before your trip, the profile downloads over Wi-Fi, and your phone connects to local networks abroad at local rates. No surprise charges appear on your home bill. Since Brexit ended free EU roaming in January 2022, this is particularly relevant for UK travellers heading to Spain, France, Italy, Greece, or Portugal. EE, Vodafone, O2, and Three all charge daily roaming fees in Europe, and a HelloRoam eSIM plan sidesteps all of that.
eSIM doesn't drain your battery faster than a physical SIM. Both use the same radio hardware to connect to cellular networks. Battery drain depends on signal strength, screen brightness, and app usage, not on whether you have an embedded or physical card installed. Running two active lines at once (dual SIM mode) can use slightly more power because your phone maintains two network connections, but the difference is small in day-to-day use. If battery life is a concern on a long-haul flight or a full day of sightseeing, the bigger impact comes from leaving mobile data on in areas with poor signal.
Post-Brexit, UK mobile operators have largely reinstated EU roaming charges. EE, Vodafone, O2, and Three all removed free EU roaming for new customers, with daily roaming fees now applying in Europe. An eSIM travel plan is a straightforward way around this. You buy a separate data plan for your EU destination, your home UK number stays active on your physical SIM for calls and texts, and the eSIM handles all data at local network rates with no daily charge from your UK carrier. This approach works whether you're in Spain, France, Italy, Greece, Portugal, or elsewhere in Europe.
eSIM is generally more practical than pocket Wi-Fi for most travellers. Pocket Wi-Fi requires hiring a separate device, carrying it charged throughout the day, and returning it after your trip. An eSIM installs directly on your phone, needs no extra hardware, and activates automatically when you land. The only scenario where pocket Wi-Fi has an edge is when you're travelling as a group and need to share data across multiple devices simultaneously without using hotspot on your phone. For solo travellers or couples, an eSIM with hotspot enabled covers both scenarios without the extra device to manage.
Using eSIM for business travel is straightforward. You install a data plan before your trip, your UK business number stays active on your physical SIM for calls, and the eSIM handles all data abroad at local rates. No expense claim needed for roaming surcharges. For frequent business travellers, the HelloRoam app lets you manage multiple profiles across different countries and pre-load plans for upcoming trips. Most phones used in business, including iPhone 15 Pro, Samsung Galaxy S24, and Google Pixel 8, fully support the technology.
eSIM coverage in rural areas depends on which local networks HelloRoam partners with in that country. In most popular destinations, we connect to multiple national carriers, so your phone automatically picks the strongest signal available. Rural areas in Europe, Southeast Asia, and North America generally have good 4G LTE coverage on major national networks. Very remote regions, such as the Scottish Highlands or parts of rural Portugal, may have patchy signal regardless of whether you're using an eSIM or a physical SIM. Check the coverage details for your specific destination before you travel.
Switching to HelloRoam for travel doesn't affect your existing UK contract at all. Your home SIM stays active in your phone throughout your trip, keeping your existing number for calls and texts. You're simply adding a separate data plan for abroad. When you return to the UK, turn off the travel eSIM line and your home SIM takes over automatically. HelloRoam eSIM plans work alongside EE, Three, Vodafone, and O2 contracts without any interference. Number porting between UK carriers is a separate process handled directly by those carriers.
Most UK phones sold on EE, Three, and O2 are locked to that network. A locked phone blocks eSIM profiles from other carriers, including travel plans. To check, go to Settings and look for a network lock or carrier restriction notice, or dial the IMEI check code *#06#. Contact your UK carrier to request an unlock — EE, Three, and O2 are legally required to unlock devices on request once your contract term is up, and many unlock for free even earlier. Once unlocked, your phone accepts any eSIM profile, including HelloRoam travel plans for abroad.
HelloRoam eSIM plans start at £0.84 for fixed data packages. Fixed plans range from 3GB to 20GB, and unlimited daily options are also available. That saves up to 84% compared with EE Roam Abroad, Vodafone Roaming, O2 Travel, or Three Go Roam add-ons, as of April 2026. No monthly fees, no contracts, and no roaming surcharges from your UK carrier. You buy the plan before your trip, scan a QR code, and it activates when you land.
