Most of the first weeks after landing happen on a phone: job sites, flat listings, your INZ account and the tax number application all need data. A HelloRoam New Zealand eSIM gets you online from the day you land while you sort out a local plan.
Every rule and fee below comes from INZ's United Kingdom Working Holiday Visa page and its fee tool, or from the other New Zealand and UK government pages linked in each section, all read on 13 October 2026. Fees and conditions change, so check the INZ page on the day you apply. Whether you qualify is INZ's decision, made on each application.
The UK scheme runs to age 35 and stays of up to 36 months
New Zealand's working holiday schemes are normally for people aged 18 to 30 and generally last up to 12 months. The UK scheme goes further on both counts: you can apply at any age from 18 to 35, and stay for up to 36 months in total.
| Rule | UK scheme, as INZ states it |
|---|---|
| Age when you apply | 18 to 35 |
| Citizenship | UK citizen with a valid UK passport |
| Where you normally live | The UK, Jersey, Guernsey or the Isle of Man, and not away for more than 2 years just before you apply |
| Earlier New Zealand working holiday visa | Not allowed, even if you never used it |
| Length of stay | 12, 23 or 36 months |
| Places | 15,000 a year. The 2026 places opened on 25 June 2026; once they are filled, the scheme closes until 2027. Listed as open. |
| Application fee | From NZD $770, including the NZD $100 International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy (IVL); not refunded if INZ declines |
| Money to live on | At least NZD $350 a month |
| Leaving New Zealand | A ticket out, or money to buy one on top of your living funds |
| Processing time | 80% of applications decided within 2 weeks |
| Work | Temporary jobs for an employer; no permanent job and no business of your own |
| Study or training | Up to 6 months in total |
| Travel in and out | As many times as you like after you arrive, until the visa expires |
| Partner or children | Each needs their own visa |
| Staying longer | A second visa up to 36 months in total, or a 3-month extension after seasonal work |
Two requirements you may see in other guides do not apply to UK applicants. The NZD $4,200 lump sum is what INZ asks of US, Canadian, German, French and Irish applicants. The UK page asks instead for at least NZD $350 a month to cover your stay, which comes to NZD $4,200 over a full 12 months. The US, Canadian, German and French scheme pages also require 'full medical insurance for the length of your stay', a condition the UK page does not list.
That does not make cover pointless. The FCDO's health advice for New Zealand tells British travellers to check they have travel insurance for local treatment or unexpected medical evacuation.
The visa length you pick decides your medical and police checks
Choosing 23 or 36 months adds paperwork, and every length sets a passport date. The visa starts on the day you enter New Zealand, and INZ wants your passport valid for at least 3 months after the visa expires.
| Visa length | Chest X-ray and medical examination | Police certificates | Passport valid from arrival day for at least |
|---|---|---|---|
| 12 months | Only if your health answers, your travel history or a total stay of more than 12 months calls for one, or INZ asks | Only if INZ asks, or your total time in New Zealand, counting earlier visas, will reach 24 months | 15 months |
| 23 months | Required | Only if INZ asks, or your total time in New Zealand, counting earlier visas, will reach 24 months | 26 months |
| 36 months | Required | Required | 39 months |
Travel history matters even for the 12-month visa. If you have spent more than 3 months in total over the past 5 years in countries missing from INZ's list of countries with a low incidence of TB, you need a chest X-ray, and several short trips count together. The UK, Ireland, Jersey, Guernsey and the Isle of Man are on the list. A plan to stay in New Zealand for more than 12 months in all, counting time on other visas, also means an X-ray and a medical.
INZ sends you to one of its approved panel physicians for these, unless your country has none. Results must be less than 3 months old when INZ receives them, and INZ wants the evidence within 15 days of your application. Police certificates must be less than 6 months old when you apply, and come from every country you are a citizen of, plus any country where you have spent more than 5 years since turning 17. Evidence from an earlier INZ application can still count: a medical less than 36 months old, or police certificates issued in the last 24 months.
You apply online with only your passport details at the start
- Check the basics against the first table, including that you have never held a New Zealand working holiday visa.
- Create an account in INZ's online services. The application is online only and must be in English.
- Enter your identity details exactly as your passport shows them. INZ warns that mistakes can delay the application, lead to a decline or get you refused entry.
- Pay the fee, from NZD $770, by Visa, Mastercard or UnionPay credit or debit card.
- Send whatever INZ asks for next: medical evidence, police certificates, proof of where you live (such as letters to your home address or an employer reference), bank or credit card statements, and a ticket out or the money for one.
- Watch your email. INZ emails its decision and, if it approves, issues an eVisa; you can check progress by logging in to your account.
Once the visa is issued, you have 12 months to enter New Zealand. You cannot delay or cancel a working holiday visa, and if you miss the window it expires and you cannot apply for another. You can also apply from inside New Zealand; the visa then starts on the day you get it, and INZ's medical rules say most in-country applicants need a chest X-ray and a general medical examination.
No embassy visit is involved: INZ takes the application and the fee online, direct from you.
One tick box on the arrival declaration protects your visa
Everyone arriving in New Zealand completes a New Zealand Traveller Declaration (NZTD). The FCDO notes that it is free, done online or in the NZTD app, and can be submitted from 24 hours before your journey starts.
UK citizens can visit New Zealand without a visa, so INZ's instruction for working holidaymakers from visa-waiver countries applies to you: tick 'I hold a temporary entry class visa' on the declaration. INZ's guide to who can apply for a working holiday visa warns that if you miss it, you may be given a visitor visa at the border, your working holiday visa will be cancelled and you cannot apply for another.

You do not need an NZeTA, the travel authority that visa-free visitors need, because INZ exempts anyone with a valid New Zealand visa, work visas included. Officers can still refuse entry if you cannot show onward travel or the money to leave, so keep the ticket or a bank statement to hand.
Pack with biosecurity in mind. The FCDO's entry rules for New Zealand say importing most food is illegal, that items such as tents, fishing equipment and golf clubs can carry pests, and that breaking the rules can mean a fine of up to NZD $100,000 or prison. If in doubt, declare it.
Since 20 April 2026, all your work must be for an employer
INZ changed the conditions on open work visas from Monday 20 April 2026, and every working holiday visa now carries the 'work for an employer' condition. An employment agreement and a contract for services both count. Owning or operating a business does not, and you cannot take a permanent job.
INZ also expects the holiday to come first, with work or study as the secondary reason for your trip. Inside those rules, you can do any legal job you like.
The adult minimum wage, for employees aged 16 and over who are not starting-out workers or trainees, is NZD $23.95 an hour before tax from 1 April 2026, according to Employment New Zealand's minimum wage rates. At least one working holiday guide online still quotes NZD $23.15, which is not the current rate.
Short-term work follows the seasons
INZ's seasonal work calendar for working holidaymakers shows where short-term jobs cluster through the year. A few of its rows:
| When | Work | Where |
|---|---|---|
| All year | Hospitality and accommodation staff | Nationwide |
| All year | Grape harvesting, pruning and vine maintenance | Nationwide |
| All year | Apple thinning, picking, packing and pruning | Central Otago |
| November to March | Strawberry picking and packing | Auckland |
| November to March | Tourism summer activity staff (outdoor guides, biking, attractions) | Nationwide |
| December to February | Cherry picking and packing | Central Otago |
| September to April | Avocado picking and packing | Northland, Waikato, Bay of Plenty |
| May to September | Ski slope staff | Queenstown, Wanaka |

For listings, INZ points job hunters to Work and Income's seasonal work pages, Horticulture New Zealand's list of recruitment sites and Tahatū Career Navigator. Before your first shift, INZ says you will need a New Zealand bank account and an IRD number.
The quick IRD number route ends on your visa's arrival deadline
Everyone with a job in New Zealand pays tax, and INZ notes that you need an IRD number from Inland Revenue to do it. Applying costs nothing, and Inland Revenue also lists the number as something you need to open a bank account.
Once you have arrived, Inland Revenue's IRD number application for new arrivals checks your identity with INZ, so you skip sending documents. You register a myIR account and give your passport details, your INZ application number and your most recent overseas tax number if you have one. The catch is timing: you must apply by the final date your visa gives for arriving in New Zealand, or use the 'living in New Zealand' route instead. Approved numbers arrive by text or email in 2 days.
This guide gives no tax advice. Inland Revenue's own pages cover tax codes and rates.
Two INZ routes add time once you are in New Zealand
On a 12 or 23-month visa, you can apply, from inside New Zealand only, to stay up to the 36-month maximum with a Working Holiday Scheme Subsequent Work Visa. It uses a paper form (INZ 1223), costs from NZD $770 including the IVL, and asks again for NZD $350 a month for the rest of your stay, evidence of onward travel and a medical if you did not have one for your first visa.
If you do not meet the requirements for that visa, INZ has a 3-month option for people who have done seasonal crop work. The Working Holiday Extension Work Visa is for working holidaymakers who have done at least 3 months of planting, maintaining, harvesting or packing crops in horticulture or viticulture; plant nurseries and food processing do not count. The work need not be continuous or for one employer, the visa costs from NZD $800, and you can only have it once.
If your current visa runs out while INZ decides, it normally issues an Interim Visa so you stay lawful.
A New Zealand number can wait until you have an address and work
Do the setup while you are still in the UK: the list of eSIM phones shows whether yours works, and the installation guide covers adding the plan before your flight.
Our New Zealand plans run on One NZ's network. Each lasts up to 30 days, and you can top up data in the app as you go.
HelloRoam plans are data-only, so they come without a New Zealand phone number. For a long stay, a local SIM with a New Zealand number makes sense once you have an address and some work lined up. Until then, data from the airport covers the job hunt and the paperwork. If you would rather keep using your UK plan for those weeks, check what UK networks charge for roaming first.
If New Zealand is one stop on a longer trip, our page on data for long multi-country trips lists the global plan, which covers New Zealand and many other countries in one purchase.
Questions travellers ask
Can I work in New Zealand if I am over 35?
Not on the UK working holiday visa, which INZ only grants to applicants aged 18 to 35. Other New Zealand work visas have their own rules, and INZ's visa pages compare the options. Only INZ can say which one fits you.
Do UK citizens get free healthcare in New Zealand?
Partly. A reciprocal health agreement covers UK citizens who normally live in the UK and are staying temporarily. When a doctor says a condition that began or worsened after arrival needs timely care, you get the same public funding as New Zealanders. Routine treatment and prescriptions are excluded. A work visa of 2 years or more may bring full eligibility.
