What a long-stay eSIM must get right for remote work

A digital nomad works online while living in different countries, often for weeks or months in each. Your phone then needs data that keeps working through long stays and border crossings. 6 checks show whether an eSIM is up to it.

How do digital nomads choose a travel eSIM?

Digital nomads pick an eSIM that covers every stop on the route, takes top-ups on the same eSIM and allows a laptop hotspot. Your plan lists each stop on your route
Open the country page for each stop before you buy. A plan works only in the countries it lists, so one missing stop means no data there.

A top-up adds data to the eSIM you already have, if the plan takes top-ups. There is no new install and no new QR code each time data runs low.
A regional plan covers border runs
A regional plan keeps one eSIM working across the borders of every country it lists, so a weekend next door needs no new install when both countries are on it.
Hotspot use is allowed
Turn on Personal Hotspot on an iPhone and your laptop joins the phone's mobile data over Wi-Fi.⁽²⁾ Some operators limit or charge extra for tethering, so check a plan's terms before you rely on it for work.⁽³⁾ All our plans allow it.

A support team that replies while you are awake
Problems do not keep office hours, in Singapore or anywhere else. Pick a seller whose support answers around the clock, so help comes while you are awake in Lisbon or Bali.

Your phone also needs to support eSIM and be unlocked, which means it is not tied to one telco.⁽¹⁾ On iPhone, go to Settings > General > About: No SIM Restrictions next to Network Provider Lock means it is unlocked.⁽⁴⁾ Check your phone model before you pick a plan.

On a stay of months, buy your next plan before the current one runs out

Our country plans run 7 or 30 days, and unlimited plans up to 30 days per purchase. The days start when the eSIM first connects at your destination, not when you install it in Singapore. To stay longer, buy the next plan before the end date.

In our app, Top up adds data to the eSIM you already have, with no new QR code. You see it on the eSIM's card when the plan can take more data.

Follow the app's top-up steps before the end date, because an expired eSIM cannot take a top-up. For more days, buy the next plan before that date: it arrives as a second eSIM with its own QR code. Install it over Wi-Fi and leave its line off, since its days start only when it first connects. When the first plan ends, switch on the new line and its data roaming, then choose it for mobile data.

Buy for the first few weeks, not the whole year, then buy again once you see how much you use. Unlimited plans carry fair-use terms, so read them before a month of daily video calls.

Hotspot for your laptop

Your phone's hotspot shares its eSIM data with your laptop, tablet or a friend's phone, which join it like any Wi-Fi network.⁽²⁾⁽³⁾ On Android 14 and later, swipe down from the top of the screen and tap Hotspot.⁽³⁾ All our plans allow hotspot use, and every device draws on the same plan, so pause laptop updates and cloud sync first. Video calls and uploads

Video calls run on whichever local network your plan joins. Our plans list 3G, 4G or 5G networks depending on the destination, so check the network list on the plan page. Send big uploads and system updates over Wi-Fi when you can. Before a week of client calls, estimate your call data so the plan size fits.

Bank codes and your home number

Your Singapore SIM keeps your number for calls, SMS and bank OTPs, while the travel eSIM carries your data. Our plans carry data only, with no phone number of their own. WhatsApp keeps working with your Singapore number over the eSIM's data.⁽⁶⁾

Crossing borders on one eSIM takes a plan that lists every stop

Country plans cover one country each. For a route through several neighbours, a regional plan lets one eSIM work in every country it lists.

Our Europe plan covers 33 destinations, including Portugal and Spain, and our Asia plan covers 19, including Thailand, Vietnam and Indonesia. Our Southeast Asia plan covers only Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand, so read its list before Bali or Vietnam. Mexico sits on our North America plan, and Colombia and Costa Rica on our South America plan. Before you buy, check every stop on the route against the plan's country list, and add a country plan for any stop it misses.

Entry, stay and visa rules differ by country, so check them before each new stop. Singapore's Ministry of Foreign Affairs lists travel advisories, notices and visa information on its website.⁽⁹⁾ You can also eRegister your trip there, so the ministry can reach you in an emergency.⁽⁹⁾

Singtel: ReadyRoam Data roaming plans valid for 30 days, each covering a group of destinations. For a longer trip, activate a new plan that starts after the current plan's last day.⁽⁸⁾
StarHub: Global roaming on Unlimited+ Plans Roaming data comes built into the plan and is already active on StarHub's side, so you only turn on data roaming on your phone.⁽¹⁰⁾ Data roaming pauses once that data runs out.⁽¹⁰⁾
SIMBA: Roaming data in every plan Every SIMBA mobile plan includes a roaming data allowance. Past it, or outside the included destinations, you top up your SIMBA Wallet to keep using data.⁽¹¹⁾ SIMBA says you can receive OTPs overseas at no extra cost.⁽¹¹⁾

Once you stop moving, a local SIM with a local number often makes sense

After months in one country, a local telco's plan may be worth it, especially if you need a local number.⁽⁴⁾

Many local plans come with a local phone number, and some local telcos sell them as eSIMs.⁽⁴⁾ If you buy in a shop after you land, bring your passport: depending on local rules, the telco may ask for ID.⁽⁴⁾ For a longer stay, a postpaid account may need proof of local residency, a local bank account or a credit card.⁽⁴⁾

Stay signed in when you check out. Each QR code and its setup steps go to your account email, so forward each one to the colleague who will use it.

Buy a plan for the next country before you cross, since an eSIM works only in the countries its plan lists. A regional plan that lists every stop saves buying again at each border. How do I handle mobile data for three months overseas?

Buy a plan for your first month, then buy the next one before it ends. The next plan is a new eSIM: install it early and keep its line off until the first plan ends, since its days start at first connection. Running low before the end date? Tap Top up in the app, if the plan takes top-ups.

What should I expect from eSIM data when working overseas?

Expect eSIM data to work as your backup line beside Wi-Fi, not your main office connection. A travel eSIM runs on local mobile networks, and speed changes by place and network. Keep Wi-Fi for big uploads and long calls, and switch to the eSIM when the Wi-Fi drops. Each destination page lists its plan's networks, so check yours first.

Can a company buy eSIMs for staff on overseas work trips?
