What Is an eSIM Card? eSIM Explained

What is a eSIM? An eSIM is a digital SIM card built into your phone that gives you instant mobile data in 185+ countries without swapping a physical card. Unlike the removable nano SIM you pick up at a Singtel or StarHub shop, the embedded chip is soldered onto your phone's motherboard and stores carrier profiles in software. Also written as e SIM or e-sim, it connects you to cellular networks for calls, SMS, and mobile data with nothing to insert, lose, or hunt for at Changi Airport Arrivals. What is cellular data? It is the 4G LTE or 5G connection your phone uses for internet, navigation, and apps, the same technology a physical SIM card uses but now connecting you to local networks overseas at local rates.

The GSMA, the industry body that manages the SGP.22 eSIM standard, defines how phones store and switch carrier profiles wirelessly. Also called a virtual SIM or digital SIM card because the entire profile lives in software, the technology is now built into most phones sold in Singapore from 2018 onwards. Compatible models include iPhones (XS through iPhone 16), Samsung Galaxy devices (S20 through Galaxy S25), and Google Pixels (3 through Pixel 9). All five Singapore carriers, Singtel, StarHub, M1, GOMO, and TPG, support eSIM for local plans. HelloRoam, built by FutureSyncs Ltd (Companies House 15950168), adds travel profiles on top, so Singapore travellers skip roaming charges from the moment they land.(Source: GSMA SGP.22 eSIM Specification)

How Does an eSIM Work? (iPhone and Android Setup)

An eSIM works by downloading and storing a carrier profile inside your phone's built-in chip. Once active, it connects you to mobile networks for calls, texts, and mobile data, the same as a physical SIM card. What is data on a mobile phone? It is the cellular internet your phone uses for maps, Grab, messaging, and browsing, delivered through a local carrier profile. Singtel, StarHub, M1, GOMO, and TPG all support eSIM on Singapore home plans. For travel, HelloRoam loads a separate local-rate profile on the same chip. On iPhone, go to Settings, Cellular, Add eSIM. On Android, go to Settings, Network, SIM manager. Most phones released after 2018 include the embedded chip. Setup takes about 5 minutes. Buy a HelloRoam plan online, open your confirmation email, and scan the QR code. Your physical Singtel, StarHub, or M1 SIM stays in place the whole time. Both lines run in dual SIM mode at once. Your Singapore SIM keeps your home number active so friends and family can reach you, while the HelloRoam eSIM handles data at local rates in Japan, Korea, Thailand, Malaysia, or Australia. Set up before you leave for Changi and your data is ready the moment you land. What is eSIM on iPhone? On models from XS and newer: Settings, Cellular, Add eSIM, then scan the QR code. You can store multiple profiles and switch between them in Settings at any time.

Why eSIM Suits Singapore Travellers: Key Advantages Explained

eSIM plans give you local data rates abroad without daily roaming charges from your Singapore carrier. You skip the SIM card counter at Changi, activate before you fly, and manage everything from your phone. Here is what you gain by switching from a physical SIM card to a HelloRoam plan.

No daily roaming fees

No daily roaming fees

Singtel ReadyRoam, StarHub DataTravel, and M1 Data Passport each charge around SGD 10 per day the moment you land overseas. A HelloRoam e SIM connects you directly to local networks at flat prepaid rates, so that daily fee never appears on your bill.

Switch networks without swapping cards

Your phone stores multiple eSIM profiles at once. Fly from Kuala Lumpur to Tokyo to Seoul and switch networks in Settings without touching a physical card.

Pay only for what your trip needs

Off to Bangkok for a long weekend? A 3-day plan covers exactly what you need. You pay only for the data your trip uses, not a full monthly bundle.

Frees up space inside your phone

Removing the physical SIM tray gives phone makers room for a larger battery or improved hardware. That space benefits the devices Singaporeans rely on every day.

Not sure if your phone supports eSIM?

Most phones released after 2019 support eSIM, including iPhone XS through iPhone 16, Samsung Galaxy S20 through Galaxy S25, and Google Pixel 3 through Pixel 9. The technology does not affect your physical SIM card or phone number. Many phones store 8 or more profiles at once. Check your device before your next flight from Changi.

eSIM vs SIM Card: What Is the Difference?

A SIM card is a small physical chip you buy at a Singtel, StarHub, or M1 shop, or pick up at Changi Airport Arrivals. An eSIM is an embedded SIM that does the same job without a removable card. Singapore's IMDA regulates both technologies under the same framework. Physical SIM vs eSIM: both handle calls, texts, and mobile data. The digital version wins on flexibility, no queuing at Changi Terminal 1 or Terminal 3 SIM counters, no risk of dropping a card in transit, and no need to contact your carrier to unlock the phone before travelling. An e SIM, also written as e-sim or electronic SIM, stores the carrier profile in software, not on a removable chip.

Common eSIM Problems and Fixes

Running into a problem? Our 24/7 support team handles these issues every day for Singapore travellers. Here are quick fixes for the most common eSIM setup problems, from QR codes that will not scan at home to data that does not connect after clearing immigration at Narita, Incheon, or Suvarnabhumi.

QR code will not scan
Clean your camera lens and hold your phone 15 to 30 cm from the QR code in good light. If it still fails, tap 'Enter Details Manually' and type the SM-DP+ address and activation code from your HelloRoam email. This works on Singtel-locked iPhones and carrier-unlocked Samsung Galaxy devices sold in Singapore.
No data service after activation
Restart your phone first. Open Settings and confirm the HelloRoam eSIM line is selected for cellular data and that Data Roaming is on for that line. Make sure Data Roaming on your Singtel, StarHub, or M1 SIM is turned off so it is not competing for priority. If you bought an auto-activation plan, the eSIM connects only after your phone detects the destination network at the foreign airport.
eSIM not showing in settings
Confirm your device supports eSIM and is not carrier-locked by Singtel, StarHub, or M1. Phones purchased on a Singtel or StarHub contract may be SIM-locked for 6 months. Toggle aeroplane mode on and off, then restart. If the profile still does not appear, remove it and reinstall using the QR code or activation code from your HelloRoam email.
Cannot remove an old eSIM profile
Go to Settings, then Cellular or Mobile Data, and select the eSIM profile you want to delete. Tap 'Remove Cellular Plan' or 'Delete eSIM'. If the option is greyed out, the plan is still active. Deactivate it first, then delete. On Samsung Galaxy devices sold in Singapore, this is under Settings, Connections, SIM Manager.
Two eSIMs causing conflicts
Most phones store several eSIM profiles but only one handles data at a time. Go to Settings, then Cellular, and choose which line handles mobile data. Assign your Singtel or StarHub line for calls and texts, and assign HelloRoam for data. Turn off any profile you are not currently using to stop conflicts.
Activation code rejected
Check that you typed the activation code exactly as shown in your HelloRoam email, including dashes and special characters. Connect to stable Wi-Fi, such as your home broadband or Changi Airport free Wi-Fi, and try again. If the code still fails, message HelloRoam support on WhatsApp and we will issue a replacement code within minutes.
eSIM technology is the biggest shift in mobile connectivity since the smartphone. Travelers no longer need to choose between staying connected and overpaying.

Frequently Asked eSIM Questions

Yes, most modern phones run both at the same time. This is called dual SIM mode. Keep your Singtel, StarHub, or M1 SIM active for calls and texts so friends and family in Singapore can reach you on your regular number. Add a HelloRoam eSIM as a second line to handle mobile data abroad at local rates. On iPhone, go to Settings, Cellular, and set each line's role. On Android, go to Settings, Network, SIM manager and assign data to your HelloRoam e-sim line. Both run independently, so you get local data rates without giving up your Singapore number.

You activate an eSIM yourself in about 5 minutes without visiting any shop or counter. Purchase a HelloRoam plan online or in the app, then open your confirmation email. On iPhone: go to Settings, Cellular, Add eSIM, and scan the QR code from your email. On Android: go to Settings, Network, SIM manager, tap Add, and scan the QR code. Your phone downloads the carrier profile over Wi-Fi. Once installed, the eSIM activates automatically when your phone detects the destination network. Set up at home before heading to Changi to avoid any delays on arrival.

Singtel, StarHub, and M1 all support embedded SIM on their home Singapore plans. For international travel data, HelloRoam connects you to local partner networks in 185+ countries at flat prepaid rates, lower than what Singapore carriers charge for overseas roaming. What is data roaming? It is when your Singapore SIM connects to a foreign network, typically at SGD 8 to SGD 27 per day. A HelloRoam e-sim plan avoids that entirely by giving you a local-rate profile for each destination.

Yes, an eSIM works for day trips to Johor Bahru (JB). Malaysia is fully covered by HelloRoam. Buy a short-duration plan before you drive or take the bus across the Causeway. Your eSIM activates the moment your phone connects to a Malaysian network. Keep your Singapore SIM active for calls back home, while your HelloRoam e-sim handles data in JB at local rates. The same applies for Batam and Bintan day trips: both are covered by HelloRoam plans for Indonesia.

No, you do not need to buy a local SIM card at Changi Airport when you have a HelloRoam eSIM. Buy a plan online before you fly, scan the QR code to install it, and your phone connects to the destination network the moment you land. Skip the SIM counter queue at Changi Arrivals entirely. HelloRoam covers 185+ countries, including Japan, South Korea, Thailand, Australia, and Malaysia, so one account handles all your trips.

Yes, HelloRoam covers multi-country ASEAN trips. Buy separate plans for each country, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Vietnam, the Philippines, or check if a regional plan covers your itinerary. Each plan activates automatically when your phone detects the local network at each destination. You can store all the profiles on your phone before you depart and switch between them in Settings. There is no need to swap a physical card or visit a local shop at each stop.

Ready to Cut Your Travel Data Costs?
HelloRoam has data plans ready for 185+ countries. Set up before you depart from Changi and arrive connected.
