Once the flights are booked, a HelloRoam Japan eSIM keeps maps, train apps and booking emails working from the moment you land, with 24/7 support if anything goes sideways. Compare our Japan data plans and install one before you fly.
Flights to Japan from Australia: Quick Facts
Every Sydney non-stop to Tokyo lands at Haneda, because Narita's own destination list names no Sydney. Tokyo non-stops from Brisbane, Melbourne, Perth and Cairns use Narita, and Jetstar also flies Cairns to Osaka.
| Flying from | Non-stop to | Airline |
|---|---|---|
| Sydney | Tokyo Haneda | Qantas, ANA, Japan Airlines |
| Sydney (7/12/2026 to 31/03/2027) | Sapporo (seasonal) | Qantas |
| Brisbane | Tokyo Narita | Qantas |
| Melbourne | Tokyo Narita | Qantas |
| Perth | Tokyo Narita | ANA |
| Cairns | Tokyo Narita, Osaka Kansai | Jetstar |
Japan Airlines flies Sydney to Haneda too, as Sydney Airport's departures board shows, and it also flies from Melbourne. Haneda puts you close to town: its terminal operator says Tokyo Station is about 30 minutes away by train or monorail.
One-stop trips fill the gaps. Singapore Airlines flies non-stop to Singapore from Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide, Perth, Cairns and Darwin, then on to Tokyo, while Cathay Pacific's Sydney to Tokyo flights connect in Hong Kong.
The Cheapest Times to Fly to Japan from Australia

Fares change all the time, so check the fare calendars on the airlines' own sites. Cathay Pacific's Sydney to Tokyo page also names a lowest-fare month, but it's worked out from fares its customers found in the previous 48 hours, so it can change from week to week.
Sakura season comes first. JNTO says the blossoms run from the latter half of March to early May as the bloom moves north, and full bloom lasts about a week in any one spot. Golden Week follows: Japan's Cabinet Office lists national holidays on 29 April and 3, 4 and 5 May. If your dates touch either, book early.
When Australian School Holidays Work Against You
Easter 2027 runs from Friday 26 to Monday 29 March, right on top of the average first bloom dates JNTO gives for Tokyo (24 March) and Osaka (27 March). The summer holidays clash with New Year, when JNTO warns of higher prices and fewer options for hotels, planes and trains. On 29/09/2026, Cathay Pacific's cheapest Sydney to Tokyo return for December was A$1,709, against A$1,064 for October, November, January and February.
February and June dodge both clashes. June's catch is the weather: JNTO's June guide says it gets more rain than any other month as the rainy season sweeps north, though Hokkaido is largely spared. For the full picture, see our month-by-month guide to Japan.
September is another quieter month. Crowds thin out once Japan's summer holidays end, JNTO says, but it's also peak typhoon season, so leave some slack in your plans.
One Day Either Side Can Change the Fare
One day can matter more than the month. The same Cathay calendar priced a return leaving Monday 19 October 2026 at A$1,484 and one leaving Tuesday 20 October at A$1,064, both coming home on 29 October. Check the days either side of your plan before you book.
How to Save Money on Flights to Japan
Compare like with like. Jetstar's Starter fare leaves out checked bags, seat selection, food and drink, so add what you need before you set it against a full-service fare.
Check the final total at checkout, not the headline fare. Flight Centre's Japan flights page says it adds an Online Booking Fee to flights booked online, plus a merchant fee that depends on how you pay, both on top of the advertised price.
Airlines That Fly from Australia to Japan
The best airline for most people is the one flying non-stop from their city, which the table at the top sets out. After that, compare what each fare includes and which Tokyo airport it uses.
| Airline | Route type | Main destination | Service level |
|---|---|---|---|
| Qantas | Non-stop | Tokyo Haneda (from Sydney), Tokyo Narita (from Brisbane and Melbourne), Sapporo (seasonal, from Sydney) | Full-service |
| Japan Airlines (JAL) | Non-stop from Sydney; also flies from Melbourne | Tokyo Haneda (from Sydney) | Full-service |
| ANA | Non-stop | Tokyo (from Sydney and Perth) | Full-service |
| Jetstar | Direct from Cairns | Tokyo Narita and Osaka Kansai | Budget |
| Singapore Airlines | Via Singapore | Tokyo (from seven Australian cities) | Full-service |
| Cathay Pacific | Via Hong Kong | Tokyo and Osaka | Full-service |
A non-stop cuts out the connection stress, the terminal transfer and the risk of a missed second leg. If your city has no non-stop, weigh a connection through Sydney, Brisbane or Melbourne against a stop in Singapore or Hong Kong.
Heading to Osaka? Jetstar flies there direct from Cairns, one of the routes Cairns Airport lists. ANA connects Sydney and Perth to Osaka through Tokyo, and Cathay Pacific lists Osaka flights from Sydney, Melbourne and Perth.
Staying Connected in Japan: eSIM, SIM Cards and Wi-Fi Options
An eSIM (a digital SIM you add by scanning a QR code or typing in an activation code) suits most Australians heading to Japan. No airport queue. No tiny plastic card to lose after nine hours in the air.
Four options are on the table, and they're not equal.
| Option | Cost | Setup | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| AU carrier roaming | A$5 to A$10 a day | Varies by carrier; Telstra's Day Pass must be turned on before you fly | Short trips, mostly on hotel Wi-Fi |
| Physical Japan SIM | Check airport vendors | Counters at Narita and Haneda | Preference for a physical card |
| Pocket Wi-Fi unit | Check airport rental counters | Rental counters at Narita and Haneda | Groups sharing one device |
| eSIM | Depends on the plan | Scan a QR code or type in an activation code | Most trips of 7+ days |
Roaming with your Australian carrier is the no-fuss option, with a few conditions. In October 2026, Telstra's Day Pass covers Japan for $10 a day with 2GB, but you need to turn it on before you fly, and it can take up to two hours. Vodafone charges $5 extra a day to use your plan's own data, and Optus Choice Plus plans get 5GB for $5 a day. For a three-day trip where you're mostly on hotel Wi-Fi, that's a reasonable call. Two weeks on Telstra's Day Pass comes to $140.
An eSIM trades that daily charge for a set amount of data you pick before you go. Our eSIM vs roaming comparison runs through the trade-offs, and if you're mostly staying in the capital, start with our Tokyo eSIM page.
One thing to check before buying any eSIM: your handset must be network-unlocked and eSIM-compatible. Apple says eSIM needs an iPhone XS, XS Max, XR or later. Android support varies by model, so check yours on our list of eSIM compatible devices.
What Two Weeks in Japan Costs Australians

The Japan Tourism Agency's 2025 figures are the closest thing to an official answer: Australians on holiday spent an average of 403,966 yen each in Japan, over an average stay of 13.2 nights. That leaves out international flights, so add your airfare on top.
That's about A$3,670 per person before flights, converted at the Reserve Bank's rate of 109.95 yen to the dollar on the same day as the Cathay Pacific fares above. Add that day's cheapest Sydney to Tokyo return (A$1,064) and you're near A$4,740.
| Spending in Japan (2025 average, Australians on holiday) | Yen per person | About A$ |
|---|---|---|
| Accommodation | 166,240 | 1,512 |
| Food and drink | 86,467 | 786 |
| Shopping | 69,685 | 634 |
| Transport within Japan | 44,206 | 402 |
| Entertainment and services | 37,288 | 339 |
| Total, including other spending | 403,966 | 3,674 |
Across all trip types, Australians spent more on entertainment and services than visitors from any other country in 2025, and ranked third for spending per head, behind Germany and the UK.
A JR Pass only pays off if you ride a lot. A 14-day Ordinary pass costs 80,000 yen (about A$728) bought on the official JR Pass site, or 84,000 yen through an overseas JR-designated agency, at prices checked in October 2026. The fast Nozomi and Mizuho Shinkansen on the Tokaido, Sanyo and Kyushu lines also need a special ticket issued only to pass holders. If you'll mostly shuttle between Tokyo and Kyoto, price single tickets before you buy. Our 10 and 16-day route guide sets out the JR legs each trip uses, so you can price them.
Visa and Entry Rules for Australians
As of October 2026, Australia is on Japan's visa exemption list, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs grants Australians 90 days on landing for a short-term stay. There's no visa to apply for before you fly.
Before you land, you can register in Visit Japan Web, the government service that puts your immigration and customs details into a QR code. Entry rules can change, so check the Ministry's list again before you book.
