South Korea has one of the world's highest 5G penetration rates. SK Telecom, KT, and LG Uplus operate dense 5G networks in Seoul, Busan, Incheon, and across the country. Coverage on the Seoul Metro is excellent throughout all lines. Jeju Island and coastal areas have strong 4G.
Even remote mountain areas in Gangwon Province have reasonable coverage along main roads.
Taiwan connects to Chunghwa Telecom, Taiwan Mobile, and Far EasTone. Taipei's MRT system has full underground coverage. The east coast (Taroko Gorge, Hualien), Sun Moon Lake, and Kenting are all well-served. Mountain roads through the Central Mountain Range can have brief gaps.

Japan's Shinkansen bullet train network has 4G and 5G coverage throughout most routes including tunnels on the Tokaido, Sanyo, and Tohoku lines. You can stream, navigate, and message throughout train journeys from Tokyo to Osaka, Kyoto, Hiroshima, and Sapporo. Brief gaps may occur in the longest tunnel sections.
South Korea's Korea Rail Serves Well Too
KTX high-speed rail in South Korea has good 4G coverage along routes from Seoul to Busan, Gyeongju, and Gangneung (for ski resorts). The Seoul Metro (subway) has coverage throughout all underground sections, unlike many other countries' subway systems. Download your Seoul neighborhood maps even though coverage is reliable, as offline maps are faster.
Taipei's Night Markets Have Heavy Network Demand
Taipei's famous night markets (Shilin, Raohe, Ningxia) draw massive crowds in the evenings, which can slow 4G speeds due to network congestion. Download any content you need for the evening before heading into the market. Navigation apps still work but may load slowly during peak hours.
Hong Kong's MTR Has Perfect Underground Coverage
Hong Kong's MTR subway system has full 4G and 5G coverage on all lines including deep underground sections. HKT, PCCW, and CSL have installed repeaters throughout the system. You can navigate, message, and stream throughout any MTR journey on your HelloRoam eSIM.
Mongolia Requires Full Offline Preparation
Outside Ulaanbaatar and provincial capitals, Mongolia has no mobile coverage across the vast steppe, Gobi Desert, and mountain wilderness areas. Mainland China has separate and restricted network access due to the Great Firewall. Most East Asia regional plans do not include China or have very limited access. Hong Kong is separate from mainland China and is covered normally. Macau may also be covered separately. If your trip includes mainland China, verify coverage or plan for a separate option.

East Asia emergency numbers: Japan uses 110 for police and 119 for fire and ambulance. South Korea uses 119 for fire and medical and 112 for police. Taiwan uses 110 for police and 119 for fire and ambulance. Hong Kong uses 999 for all emergencies. Mongolia uses 102 for police and 103 for ambulance. Save the correct numbers for each country.
