Your plan changes the answer. Unlimited Ultimate includes data, talk and text in those 210+ destinations with no TravelPass at all. Unlimited Welcome and Unlimited Plus come with TravelPass already on the line, and every myPlan plan includes Mexico and Canada.
To skip Verizon's daily fee for data, a HelloRoam travel eSIM for your destination can carry your data while your Verizon number stays on the phone.
We read every Verizon price and rule in this guide on Verizon's own pages on November 3, 2026. Verizon can change them, so check its TravelPass page before you fly.
Verizon TravelPass bills each line per 24-hour session, from your first use abroad
A session starts on its own the first time you make or answer a call, send a text or use data in a TravelPass country, according to Verizon's TravelPass FAQs. Cellular data or data roaming has to be on for TravelPass to work. Two hours into the session, Verizon texts you the time it ends, and any use after that starts a new one.
Background data counts as use. Verizon names app refreshes (weather and fitness apps, for example), email syncing and software updates as things that can start a session once cellular data or data roaming is on. So a phone that sits in your bag with data on can still cost you $12 that day.
One fee can cover two countries. Two countries in one session, or a layover in another country on the way, cost a single fee. Moving between countries with different rates, such as Mexico to Italy, starts a new session at the new rate.
Each session includes 5 GB of high-speed data, then 3G speeds until it ends. When you hit 5 GB, Verizon texts an offer of 2 GB more for $10, or $5 in Mexico and Canada. Reply SPEED to buy it, as many times as you need in that session.
Calls inside the country you're visiting and back to the US are included. A call to a third country costs what it would from the US. Wi-Fi calls to the US cost nothing extra, while Wi-Fi calls to any other country are billed at international long distance rates, with or without TravelPass.
Here's what that adds up to. One line used every day of a 7-day trip to Italy costs 7 × $12 = $84, plus taxes and fees. Our guide to Italy phone plans for US travelers sets these passes next to TIM, Vodafone and WindTre. Four lines on one account, all used daily, cost $48 a day, or $336 for the week, because every line pays the full $12. A second Verizon number on the same phone is charged separately if you use both abroad.
That's where Verizon differs from AT&T's international roaming plan, which charges $6 for each extra line used on the same day.
Verizon TravelPass, the $100 monthly plan and Unlimited Ultimate fit different trips
TravelPass is one of several ways Verizon bills you outside the US. Here's each option, from Verizon's own plan and support pages.
| Option | Where it works | What you get | What it costs | How to get it |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| TravelPass | 210+ countries and destinations | Unlimited talk and text; 5 GB of high-speed data per 24-hour session, then 3G | $12 a day per line; $6 in Mexico and Canada; charged only on days you use the phone | Already on Unlimited Welcome and Unlimited Plus lines; otherwise text TRAVEL to 4004 or add it in My Verizon |
| International Monthly Plan | 210+ countries and destinations | 250 minutes, unlimited texts, 20 GB of high-speed data, then 3G | $100 per line per month; $0.25 a minute after 250 minutes | My Verizon; one month, or set to renew each month |
| Unlimited Ultimate | 210+ countries and destinations | Unlimited talk and text; 15 GB of high-speed data a month, then 1.5 Mbps | Included in the plan | Nothing to add; TravelPass can't be added |
| 3 TravelPass Days perk | TravelPass countries, not cruise ships | 3 TravelPass days each bill cycle, banked up to 36 | $10 a month per line | My Verizon, on Simplicity, Unlimited Plus or Unlimited Welcome |
| Cruise Daily Pass | Select cruise lines, 12 miles or more from land | Unlimited texts and calls to the US; 0.5 GB of high-speed data, then 3G | $20 a day per line, only on days you use the phone at sea | Text CRUISE to 4004 |
| Pay as You Go | Anywhere no travel plan applies | Billed by use | Data $2.05 per MB where Verizon offers data; texts $0.50 sent, $0.05 received; calls $0.99 to $2.99 a minute | Automatic |
| Prepaid TravelPass | 140+ countries and destinations | Your prepaid plan's talk and text; 5 GB of high-speed data per session, then 3G | $12 a day; $6 in Mexico and Canada | Already on compatible prepaid lines |
Verizon calls the monthly plan ideal for trips of 9 days or longer, and the price math agrees: 9 days of daily TravelPass use come to $108. The data works differently, though. The monthly plan's 20 GB has to last the whole month, while TravelPass gives you 5 GB every session, and the monthly plan stops at 250 minutes of calls before it charges $0.25 a minute.
The monthly plan ends 30 days after you add it unless you set it to renew. Verizon's terms also say travel plans other than TravelPass need International Services Enabled on the account, which you can add once the account has been active for 34 days and is in good standing. If you've been a Verizon customer for less than 90 days, Verizon does a manual credit review first.
Unlimited Ultimate includes travel abroad, while Welcome and Plus add TravelPass for you
Unlimited Ultimate is the one current myPlan plan with travel abroad built in. It includes unlimited talk and text in 210+ countries and destinations, plus 15 GB of high-speed data a month, then 1.5 Mbps. Verizon won't add TravelPass to it, since the plan already covers those places.
Unlimited Welcome and Unlimited Plus come with TravelPass already on the line. That saves a setup step, not money: the first call, text or data use in a TravelPass country starts a paid session.
All three myPlan plans include talk, text and data in Mexico and Canada, and Verizon's TravelPass page says the Simplicity Plan includes roaming there too. Data drops to 3G speeds after 2 GB a day. A plan without that allowance pays $6 a day on TravelPass.
Long stays have limits. If more than 50% of your talk, text or data use over 60 days happens in Mexico or Canada, Verizon may remove or limit service there. Its terms draw the same 50% line for TravelPass use over any 60 days.
What Verizon charges in the countries Americans visit most
The National Travel and Tourism Office counted 39.9 million US visits to Mexico and 14.1 million to Canada in 2024, its newest full-year count. Overseas, the UK, Italy and France led the list. Here's what Verizon's current plans charge in each.
| Destination | US visits in 2024 (NTTO) | Unlimited Welcome or Unlimited Plus | Unlimited Ultimate |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mexico | 39.9 million | Included; 3G speeds after 2 GB a day | Included; 2 GB a day on the Mexico and Canada feature, and the plan's 15 GB a month of international high-speed data |
| Canada | 14.1 million | Included; 3G speeds after 2 GB a day | Included; 2 GB a day on the Mexico and Canada feature, and the plan's 15 GB a month of international high-speed data |
| United Kingdom | 6.0 million | TravelPass, $12 a day | Included, within 15 GB of high-speed data a month |
| Italy | 4.2 million | TravelPass, $12 a day | Included, within the same 15 GB a month |
| France | 4.1 million | TravelPass, $12 a day | Included, within the same 15 GB a month |
In Mexico and Canada, the limit to watch is 2 GB of high-speed data a day. On Unlimited Ultimate, Verizon's pages don't say whether that limit or the plan's 15 GB a month applies first, so ask Verizon before a data-heavy trip. If maps, ride apps and video calls will push you past 2 GB a day, compare data plans for Mexico or a Canada data plan before you cross the border.

Overseas on Welcome or Plus, a week of daily use in London adds $84 per line. Hold that number up against UK data plans for a week away or mobile data for Italy. A week in Paris costs the same $84, and 10 days cost $120 on TravelPass, or $100 on the monthly plan.
The TravelPass country list covers 210+ destinations but leaves out the Maldives and Cuba
Verizon's TravelPass country list prices every destination at $12 a day except Canada and Mexico, at $6. The Maldives and Cuba aren't on it. Verizon says travel to a country outside the list is billed at Pay as You Go rates. Its page of services and pricing by country lists Cuba at $2.99 a minute for calls and $2.05 per MB of data, so 100 MB there costs $205.
The Maldives is different. The same page lists Verizon calls there at $1.79 a minute, and texts, but no Verizon data at all. To get online on your phone on a Maldives trip, look at data plans for the Maldives before you go.
Verizon also warns that some newer SIM cards and eSIMs may get limited service in 15 places while local operators update their networks, Malaysia, Macao and Mongolia among them. If one of those is on your route, check with Verizon before you count on TravelPass.
How to add Verizon TravelPass and get it working when you land
Check My Verizon first, because Unlimited Welcome and Unlimited Plus lines already have TravelPass. If yours doesn't, add it one of these ways:
- Text TRAVEL to 4004 from your Verizon phone.
- On the My Verizon website, go to Account, then My plan, then International details, and select Add new plan. Choose Travel Plan and follow the International Trip Planner. Only the Account Owner or an Account Manager can do this.
- Or add it through Verizon's Trip Planner.
Add it once and it stays on your line for future trips. There's no charge while you're in the US, and Verizon says you don't need to opt in each day.
When you land, turn on data roaming, or TravelPass won't work. On iPhone, Apple's path is Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data Options > Data Roaming, and with two lines you tap your Verizon number first. On Android, Verizon's Device Troubleshooting Assistant shows the steps for your model when you search "Turn data roaming on or off."
Verizon says your phone can take up to three minutes to find a local network. If service doesn't come back after that, turn the phone off and on again.
TravelPass days from the $10 perk or the Verizon Visa Card cut the daily fee
Verizon's 3 TravelPass Days perk costs $10 a month per line and adds 3 TravelPass days each bill cycle. It works with the Simplicity Plan, Unlimited Plus and Unlimited Welcome, not Unlimited Ultimate. Days bank up to 36, expire 12 months after they arrive and can't move to another line, according to Verizon's perk FAQs.
Timing is what makes it pay. Because the days bank, a line that keeps the perk for three bill cycles before a 9-day trip holds 9 days for $30, against $108 at the daily rate. You can cancel the perk anytime, and banked days stay usable until they expire. The $10 isn't prorated, and TravelPass days don't work on cruise ships.
Verizon uses banked days on their own when TravelPass is on and you travel, and it texts you how many you have when you arrive. To see them before a trip, open My Verizon, go to Claimed deals and more, and select Manage TravelPass days.
The Verizon Visa Card adds 2 TravelPass days a calendar year once you're approved. Verizon doesn't assign those days to a line on its own, so assign them in the TravelPass bank before you go. They expire at the end of the year, and the account owner or manager can move them to another line there. Older 5G Get More and 5G Do More plans, which Verizon no longer offers, include one TravelPass day each month.
How to avoid Verizon TravelPass charges you didn't plan
Three things start a session: a call made or answered, a text sent, and data used, background data included. If you're not using a travel eSIM, here's how to keep a day free:
- Put the phone in airplane mode, which Apple says turns off every radio except Bluetooth, then turn Wi-Fi back on.
- To keep calls coming in, turn off cellular data instead. Verizon's terms suggest it for travelers who don't plan to use data, since apps send and receive data on their own. A call you answer still starts a session.
- Call home over Wi-Fi. Verizon says Wi-Fi calls to the US cost nothing extra.

Near a border, your phone can pick up the next country's network if its signal is stronger. Verizon says it texts you that country's rates when that happens.
Removing TravelPass isn't a safe fix on a monthly plan. Verizon's TravelPass page says a line without it pays Pay as You Go rates, while its My Verizon help page says disabling TravelPass blocks international use. Ask Verizon which applies to your line before you rely on either.
Verizon texts alerts when your international travel data charges reach $250, $500 and $1,000, and it blocks international travel data once unbilled data use hits $500. Its terms call these courtesy alerts it can't guarantee. Charges can take up to 60 days to reach your bill.
To check your use during the trip, open the International plan page in My Verizon, select your device and choose View plan details and usage. For a charge you don't recognize, call Verizon's international support at (800) 711-8300 from the US or +1-908-559-4899 from abroad.
Verizon Prepaid TravelPass covers 140+ countries
Prepaid TravelPass costs the same $12 a day, or $6 in Mexico and Canada, with 5 GB of high-speed data per session, but it covers 140+ countries and destinations. It's already on compatible prepaid lines, and data-only prepaid plans can't use it. When a session starts, Verizon takes the fee from your prepaid balance or asks you to add funds, per its Prepaid TravelPass FAQs.
The 15 GB, Unlimited and Unlimited Plus prepaid plans include calls, texts and data in Mexico and Canada at no extra cost. Verizon also says that removing Prepaid TravelPass means the phone can't be used while roaming.
Cruise ships and flights use Verizon's $20 daily passes
Cruise Daily Pass costs $20 a day per line on select cruise lines, 12 miles or more from land, with unlimited texts, calls to the US and 0.5 GB of high-speed data, then 3G. Without it, Verizon's cruise page says you pay $1.99 a minute for calls and $0.50 per text sent at sea, with no data at all. In-flight Daily Pass is also $20 a day on participating international flights.
When a travel eSIM costs less than Verizon roaming
TravelPass is the simple choice for a short trip, or for days when you'll make lots of calls on your own number. Two days in London cost $24 on one line, and calls home work just as they do in the US. And you pay nothing extra where your plan already covers you: Mexico and Canada on Unlimited and Simplicity plans, and 210+ destinations on Unlimited Ultimate within its 15 GB.
The math turns on longer trips, on family accounts and outside the TravelPass list. A week of daily use costs $84 for one line and $336 for four. Price an eSIM for international travel for the same days against that total, and keep the perk route in mind if you travel often.
On Unlimited Ultimate, a travel eSIM mostly matters if you'll pass 15 GB in one bill cycle abroad. Our guide to eSIM vs international roaming covers the trade-offs beyond Verizon, and our explainer on how AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile bill roaming puts the three carriers side by side.
We sell travel eSIMs, so here's how we handle that conflict of interest.
A travel eSIM can run next to your Verizon line once the phone is unlocked
A travel eSIM only works on an unlocked phone. Verizon's unlocking policy, effective February 18, 2026, unlocks a postpaid phone once it's bought at full retail price or its device payment balance is paid in full. So a phone you're still paying off can't take another company's eSIM yet. Prepaid phones stay locked until 365 days of paid, active service.
On iPhone, Settings > General > About shows "No SIM Restrictions" next to Carrier Lock when the phone is unlocked.

Install the travel eSIM at home before you leave. If it's your first one, here's how to set up an eSIM before you fly. Our own plan pages, which we read the same day as Verizon's, say a HelloRoam plan starts when the phone first connects to a network at your destination, not on the day you install it. On iPhone, then:
- Make the travel eSIM your data line under Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data, and turn on Data Roaming for that line.
- Leave Allow Cellular Data Switching off. Apple's Dual SIM guide says it lets the iPhone use cellular data from both lines, and any data on the Verizon line abroad starts a session.
- Keep the Verizon line on so calls and texts still reach you. Answering a call or sending a text on it starts a session, so call and message home with FaceTime, iMessage or WhatsApp over the eSIM's data.
On a Pixel, choose the travel eSIM under Settings > Network & internet > SIMs > Mobile data, and leave Automatic data switching off. Google says only one SIM can be the default for data.
Not sure how much data to buy? Estimate how much your trip needs before you pick a plan.
Questions travelers ask
Does Verizon automatically turn on TravelPass?
On Unlimited Welcome, Unlimited Plus and compatible prepaid lines, yes: TravelPass is already on. Unlimited Ultimate doesn't need it, since travel abroad is part of the plan. On other plans, you add it by texting TRAVEL to 4004. Either way, the first call made or answered, text sent or data used in a TravelPass country starts a paid 24-hour session.
How do I avoid getting charged for Verizon TravelPass?
Without a travel eSIM, keep cellular data off on days you don't need it, since background data can start a session, and don't make or answer calls or send texts on your Verizon line. Use Wi-Fi instead, because Wi-Fi calls to the US cost nothing extra. Don't count on removing TravelPass: Verizon's pages disagree on what happens without it.
How do I turn on TravelPass for Verizon?
Text TRAVEL to 4004, or go to International details in My Verizon and select Add new plan, then Travel Plan. When you land, turn on data roaming on the phone, because TravelPass won't work without cellular data or data roaming on. It then stays on your line for later trips.
