What Is an eSIM Card? eSIM Explained

An eSIM is a digital SIM built into your phone that lets you activate a mobile data plan without inserting a physical SIM card. The iPhone 14 and later sold in the US ship without a physical SIM tray, making eSIM your only option for cellular data. Unlike a removable SIM, your phone's motherboard houses the embedded chip permanently and stores carrier profiles in software. Also written as e SIM or e-sim, it connects you to cellular networks for calls, SMS texts, and mobile data with no card to insert, lose, or swap at the airport. What is cellular? Cellular is the mobile network technology (4G LTE or 5G) that carries your calls and internet data, the same technology a physical SIM card uses.

The GSMA, the industry body that manages the SGP.22 eSIM standard, defines how phones store and switch carrier profiles wirelessly. This technology is also called a virtual SIM or digital SIM card because the entire profile lives in software. Most phones released after 2018 have this chip built in. Compatible models include iPhones (XS through iPhone 16), Samsung Galaxy devices (S20 through Galaxy S25), and Google Pixels (3 through Pixel 9). HelloRoam, built by FutureSyncs Ltd (UK Companies House 15950168), helps travelers skip data roaming charges, avoid the physical SIM card swap at the airport, and get online the moment they land.(Source: GSMA SGP.22 eSIM Specification)

How Does an eSIM Work? (iPhone and Android Setup)

An eSIM works by using built-in software to download and store a cellular carrier profile on your phone. Once active, you connect to mobile networks, make calls, send texts, and use cellular data (mobile internet used by your phone for browsing, streaming, and apps), the same as a physical SIM card. How does an eSIM work on iPhone? On compatible models (XS and newer), go to Settings, Cellular, Add eSIM. How does it work on Android? The steps are nearly the same: Settings, Network, SIM manager. Most compatible phones released after 2018 support this feature.(Source: GSMA SGP.22 eSIM Specification) Check our compatibility list to confirm your model.

Getting started takes about 5 minutes: buy a prepaid eSIM plan, open your confirmation email, and scan the QR code. Your physical SIM card stays in place the whole time. You can run both at once in dual SIM mode, with the embedded profile handling cellular data and your regular SIM keeping your home number active. What is eSIM on iPhone? It works the same way: Settings, Cellular, Add eSIM, scan the QR code. You can store multiple profiles and switch between them at any time. On the US iPhone 14 and later, Apple removed the physical SIM tray entirely, making those phones eSIM-only.

How Do You Set Up an eSIM?

Most Americans already own an eSIM-ready phone and don't know it. The whole process takes about 5 minutes. No physical SIM card swap needed. You can store multiple profiles on one device, switch between them, and hit the ground running in any country.

Why eSIM Plans Beat Data Roaming: Key Advantages Explained

AT&T charges $12/day and Verizon charges $10/day the moment you land abroad, but an eSIM plan gives you local cellular data rates without those roaming charges. You skip the SIM card hunt at the airport, activate on the go, and manage everything from your phone. Here's what you gain by switching from a physical SIM card to a prepaid plan from HelloRoam.

No bill shock when you land

Not sure if your device supports eSIM?

Most phones released after 2019 support eSIM, including iPhone XS through iPhone 16, Samsung Galaxy S20 through Galaxy S25, and Google Pixel 3 through Pixel 9. The technology is safe to use and doesn't affect your physical SIM card or phone number. Many phones can store 8 or more profiles at once. Check your device before you book your trip.

eSIM vs SIM Card: Quick Overview

US carriers like T-Mobile, AT&T, and Verizon still sell phones with a physical SIM slot, but Apple dropped it entirely on the iPhone 14 and later. An eSIM is an embedded SIM that does the same job digitally, without a removable card. Physical SIM vs eSIM: both handle calls, texts (SMS), and cellular data. The digital version wins on flexibility, setup speed, and security. An e SIM is also called a virtual SIM or digital SIM card because the carrier profile lives in software, not on a removable chip.

eSIM vs Data Roaming: Quick Cost Overview

Data roaming through your home carrier can cost $10 to $30 per GB. HelloRoam prepaid plans come in well under those rates. An e SIM for international travel costs far less than activating a roaming add-on from T-Mobile, AT&T, or Verizon.

Common eSIM Problems and Fixes

Running into a problem with your eSIM installation or cellular data? Our 24/7 support team sees these issues often, and here are quick fixes for the most common problems travelers face after scanning the QR code.

QR code won't scan
Clean your phone's camera lens and make sure the QR code is well-lit. Hold your phone 6 to 12 inches from the code and tilt the screen slightly. If it still fails, tap 'Enter Details Manually' and type in the SM-DP+ address and activation code from your HelloRoam email.
No data service after activation
Restart your phone first. Then go to Settings and confirm the HelloRoam line is set for cellular data and that Data Roaming is turned on. If you bought an automatic-activation plan, it won't go live until you arrive at your destination country.
eSIM not showing in settings
Confirm your device supports eSIM and isn't carrier-locked. Turn airplane mode on and off, then restart the phone. If the profile still doesn't appear, remove it and reinstall using your QR code or activation code from HelloRoam. This fix works in a pinch when you're already at your destination.
Cannot remove an old eSIM profile
Go to Settings, then Cellular or Mobile Data, and tap the profile you want to delete. Choose 'Remove Cellular Plan' or 'Delete eSIM'. If the option is grayed out, the plan is still active. Turn it off first, then delete it.
Two eSIMs causing conflicts
Most phones let you store several profiles but only use one for data at a time. Go to Settings, then Cellular, and choose which line handles mobile data. Turn off any profile you aren't using right now.
Activation code rejected
Check that you typed the code exactly as shown in your email, including any dashes or special characters. Connect to stable Wi-Fi and try again. If the code still fails, contact HelloRoam support via WhatsApp for a replacement.
eSIM technology is the biggest shift in mobile connectivity since the smartphone. Travelers no longer need to choose between staying connected and overpaying.

Frequently Asked eSIM Questions

An eSIM gives you the same calls, texts, and data as a physical SIM, plus faster activation and better flexibility. For travelers, it's the better choice because you buy a plan online, scan a QR code, and connect in minutes. No store visit, no card swap, and no risk of losing a tiny nano SIM. A physical SIM still makes sense for older phones that don't support the technology or for budget devices without an embedded chip. HelloRoam plans start at $1.03 and cover 185+ countries.

eSIM technology has a few limits to know upfront. It only works on phones with an embedded chip, which means models released after 2018 for iPhone and around 2020 for most Android phones. The profile downloads over Wi-Fi the first time, and once installed it lives on that device rather than moving between phones like a plastic card. Budget phones and some regional models still skip the chip, so confirm your device supports eSIM before you rely on it.

An eSIM gives travelers local data rates abroad without paying carrier roaming fees. You buy a prepaid plan before your trip, scan a QR code, and your phone connects to local networks when you land. No store visit, no SIM card swap, and no surprise charges on your home bill. The technology also lets you keep your home number active on your physical SIM while your travel plan handles data. HelloRoam connects to 199 networks across 185+ countries.

You don't convert your existing SIM to an eSIM. Instead, you add one as a second line. On iPhone, go to Settings, Cellular, Add eSIM, and scan the QR code from your HelloRoam confirmation email. On Android, go to Settings, Network, SIM manager, and tap Add. Your physical SIM stays in place the whole time. Both lines run at once in dual SIM mode: your home number handles calls and texts while the embedded profile handles data.

An eSIM has no measurable effect on battery life. The chip is passive hardware that stores carrier profiles, and it talks to cell towers over the same radios a physical SIM card uses. Signal strength at your location drives battery use, not the SIM type inside your phone. If you run two lines at once in dual SIM mode, expect slightly faster drain because the phone holds two network connections at the same time.

eSIM is better than a physical SIM for most people with a modern phone. You activate in minutes by scanning a QR code instead of visiting a store. You can store multiple profiles on one device and switch between them without swapping cards. The technology uses the same encryption as a physical SIM, plus your phone's biometric lock adds protection. The only time a physical card is better is when your phone doesn't support the embedded version.
