A HelloRoam eSIM for Italy is that third kind: you install it at home, and its plan days start only when it first connects to a network in Italy, so it's ready for maps and train tickets when you land.
We checked every price and plan rule in this guide on the carriers' own pages on October 27, 2026. Prices change, so check the carrier's page before you buy.
Your US phone plan works in Italy for $12 a day on AT&T and Verizon
AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile all cover Italy, plus San Marino and Vatican City. If roaming is new to you, start with our guide to data roaming costs by carrier. In Italy, what you pay depends on your carrier and your plan:
| Carrier and plan | Cost in Italy | Data | Calls and texts |
|---|---|---|---|
| AT&T International Day Pass | $12 a day for one line, $6 for each other line used that day; at most 10 daily fees per line per bill period on land | Your US plan's data | Your US plan's talk and text; texts you receive don't start a fee |
| Verizon TravelPass | $12 a day per line, plus taxes and fees | 5 GB of high-speed data per 24-hour session, then 3G speeds | Unlimited calls and texts |
| Verizon International Monthly Plan | $100 | 20 GB of high-speed data, then 3G speeds | 250 minutes, unlimited texts |
| T-Mobile Experience Beyond | Included | 15 GB of high-speed data, then up to 256 Kbps | Texts included; calls $0.50 a minute |
| T-Mobile Experience More | Included | 5 GB of high-speed data, then up to 256 Kbps | Texts included; calls $0.50 a minute |
| T-Mobile Essentials | International Pass: $10 for 1 day, $50 for 10 days or $75 for 30 days | 2 GB, 15 GB or 30 GB of high-speed data | Texts included; the pass adds free calls |
AT&T adds International Day Pass to smartphones that arrive in an included destination and sends a text to say so. A 24-hour pass starts the first time you talk, text or use data in Italy. One line pays at most 10 daily fees per bill period on land, so a two-week trip inside one bill period tops out at $120. Our AT&T International Day Pass guide covers the plans that skip the fee, such as Elite 2.0, which lists Italy among its included destinations.
Verizon's TravelPass costs $12 a day per line, plus taxes and fees, and Verizon adds it automatically to Unlimited Plus and Unlimited Welcome lines. A session starts when you make or answer a call, send a text or use data, and background app refreshes count. For trips of 9 days or longer, Verizon suggests its $100 International Monthly Plan instead. Unlimited Ultimate already includes international data, talk and text.
T-Mobile builds Italy into its Experience plans. Experience Beyond includes 15 GB of high-speed data in 215+ countries and destinations, and Experience More includes 5 GB. After that, data runs at up to 256 Kbps. Calls cost $0.50 a minute, whether you make them or answer them. On Essentials, texting is free, but data needs an International Pass. Our T-Mobile international roaming guide walks through every plan.
Here's what 10 days of daily use in Italy costs one line. AT&T's Day Pass comes to $120. Verizon's TravelPass comes to $120 plus taxes and fees, or $100 on its monthly plan. On T-Mobile Essentials, one 10 Day Pass costs $50. A TIM Tourist plan costs €24.99 for 30 days, SIM included.
Italian tourist plans from TIM, Vodafone and WindTre cost about €25 with the SIM
TIM, Vodafone and WindTre sell plans just for visitors. Each one gives you an Italian number, calls and a large data allowance.
| Plan | Price | Data in Italy (EU share) | Calls | Where to buy |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| TIM Tourist | €14.99 for 30 days, plus €10 for the SIM | 200 GB (23 GB); 100 GB more for €5 at activation | Unlimited domestic minutes, 100 international minutes | TIM stores |
| Vodafone Dolce Vita Start | €14.95 a month, plus a SIM of up to €10 | 100 GB (25 GB) | 200 minutes in Italy and to 40+ countries, US included | Vodafone stores |
| Vodafone Dolce Vita Pro | €19.95 a month, plus a SIM of up to €10 | 200 GB (33 GB) | 200 minutes in Italy and to 40+ countries, US included | Vodafone stores |
| Vodafone Dolce Vita Ultra | €24.95 a month (SIM cost not listed) | 300 GB (41 GB) | 200 minutes in Italy and to 40+ countries | Vodafone stores |
| WindTre Tourist Pass Digital | €25 for 1 month, SIM and activation included | 200 GB (23 GB) | Unlimited minutes to Italy, 100 minutes to 53 countries, US included | Online, as an eSIM |
These plans are built for visitors. TIM and Vodafone sell them only to customers with a foreign tax code, and WindTre only to customers born abroad who have no tax code registered in Italy. Bring your passport to the store: Apple notes that, depending on local rules, a carrier may ask for ID such as a passport when you buy a local plan.
TIM's and Vodafone's tourist pages send you to a store. WindTre sells its passes online as an eSIM, and its stores in Italy give you a physical SIM or help you activate the eSIM.
Read the fine print before you pay:
- When TIM Tourist's data runs out, browsing in Italy stops unless you have another data option on the line.
- Vodafone's Dolce Vita renews every month and charges in advance. Its contract summary says you can cancel at any time at no cost, in a store, in the My Vodafone app or by calling 190.
- Vodafone's contract also says a tourist SIM can't be replaced if it's lost, stolen or faulty, and its number can't move to another carrier. Guard that SIM card.
- WindTre's SIM switches off by itself at the end of its validity period. Tourist Pass Digital lets you share its data through your phone's hotspot at no extra cost.

Italian SIM data covers the rest of the EU, but not every border
Each tourist plan sets aside part of its data for other EU countries: 23 GB on TIM Tourist and on WindTre's Tourist Pass Digital, and 25 GB to 41 GB on Vodafone's Dolce Vita plans. Vodafone's contract summaries for Start and Pro count the UK and Switzerland in that roaming allowance.
TIM says its tourist plan works in Italy and in EU countries. WindTre says traffic outside the EU isn't included, and it stopped applying EU rates in the UK and Gibraltar on June 16, 2025. So if your trip goes on to Zurich or London, check the plan's country list before you leave Italy.
Your US plan has no such gap: Switzerland and the UK are on AT&T's, Verizon's and T-Mobile's lists. One AT&T daily fee covers every included country you visit that day, and Verizon charges one fee for two countries in the same 24-hour session when both cost $12. On a trip through several countries, one Europe data plan also keeps a single eSIM working across the borders it covers, Switzerland and the UK included.
Vodafone leads Italy's speed tests, and TIM leads on consistency
Opensignal's December 2025 Italy report, built from its users' data from September 1 to November 29, 2025, gave Vodafone 9 of its 16 awards, two of them shared. Vodafone had the top Download Speed Experience score, 63.8 Mbps, and won the Reliability Experience award.
TIM won Consistent Quality: its users got uninterrupted service for common apps 79.2% of the time. TIM also won the video and games awards, though on video it finished less than one point ahead of Vodafone, 69.5 to 69.1 on a 100-point scale. WindTre led on 5G availability: its users had a 5G signal 85.6% of the time.
For a visitor, the plan's price, data and where you buy it may matter more than gaps that small. If you're heading into the mountains, check the carrier's coverage map first.

A travel eSIM adds Italian data and keeps your US number
A travel eSIM sits next to your US line on the same phone, as long as your phone supports eSIM. You install it over Wi-Fi before you leave, then make it your data line when you land. You get no Italian number, so you call and message over WhatsApp, FaceTime or iMessage.
HelloRoam's Italy eSIM works that way. As of October 31, 2026, it connects to the TIM, WindTre and Iliad networks; the list can change, and the plan page shows the current one. Plans come with fixed data or with unlimited data priced by the day. Fair-use terms apply. You can share the data through your phone's hotspot, and support answers 24/7.
We sell these eSIMs, so this guide names the cases where another plan fits better. Read our policy on conflicts of interest to see how we keep that fair. If you want an Italian number for local calls, a TIM, Vodafone or WindTre tourist plan is the better buy. For a one-day stopover, your carrier's day pass, or the data your T-Mobile Experience plan already includes, is simpler.
Your phone must be unlocked, and recent US iPhones take eSIMs only
Any SIM or eSIM from another provider needs an unlocked phone. On an iPhone, open Settings > General > About: if "No SIM restrictions" appears next to Carrier Lock, it's unlocked. Apple's unlock guide says only your carrier can unlock it, and that it can take a few days, so ask well before your flight.
Check for a SIM tray too. Apple's US tech specs for the iPhone 16 Pro say iPhone 16 models activate with an eSIM and don't support a physical SIM, so a plastic TIM or Vodafone SIM won't go in. On a phone like that, WindTre's online eSIM or a travel eSIM skips the plastic card. Check that your phone supports eSIM before you buy either.
Keep your US number on for bank codes while Italian data does the work
With a travel eSIM, your US line can stay on for calls and texts, so bank codes and airline texts still reach you. AT&T rates texts you receive as domestic, so they don't start a Day Pass. Verizon starts a TravelPass session when you make or answer a call, send a text or use data. T-Mobile includes texting abroad.
Set up the phone like this when you land:
- If your iPhone runs iOS 26 or later, it may show Turn On Travel eSIM when you land. Tap it and choose Travel eSIM and Current eSIM, not Travel eSIM Only. Your US line then stays on, and the travel eSIM handles data.
- Pick the travel line for data. On iPhone, go to Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data and choose it.
- Turn on data roaming for the travel line, as its setup steps say. Our install guide for iPhone and Android shows where that switch is.
- Leave Allow Cellular Data Switching off. Apple says turning it on lets your iPhone use data from both plans, and any data your US line uses in Italy can start a $12 day on AT&T or Verizon.
Apple also warns that with both lines on, your home line can still run up roaming fees. Answering a call on your US number starts a daily fee on AT&T and Verizon, and costs $0.50 a minute on T-Mobile. For the bigger picture, weigh a travel eSIM against carrier roaming.
Pick your Italy phone plan by trip length and how you'll use it
Your trip decides which phone plan for Italy makes sense:
- A weekend or a short stop in Rome: your carrier's pass is simplest. Two days cost $24 for one line on AT&T, or on Verizon plus taxes and fees.
- A week or two, mostly data: a travel eSIM or WindTre's online eSIM. Neither needs a store visit.
- You want an Italian number for local calls: a TIM or Vodafone tourist plan from a store, or WindTre's Tourist Pass Digital online. On a phone that takes eSIMs only, pick WindTre. It sells the plan as an eSIM, and TIM's and Vodafone's tourist pages don't mention one.
- Italy plus Switzerland or the UK: a US carrier pass, Vodafone's Dolce Vita Start or Pro, or a Europe-wide eSIM. TIM's and WindTre's tourist data covers EU countries only.
Not sure how much data to buy? Total up your trip's data use, then compare plans for the same number of days.
Questions travelers ask
How much does an Italian SIM card cost?
As of October 27, 2026, TIM Tourist costs €14.99 for 30 days plus €10 for the SIM. Vodafone's Dolce Vita Start costs €14.95 a month plus a SIM of up to €10. WindTre's Tourist Pass Digital costs €25 for one month, with the eSIM and activation included. Each comes with an Italian number.
Which Italian SIM is best for unlimited data?
None of the Italian tourist plans we checked is unlimited. Vodafone's Dolce Vita Ultra has the most data, 300 GB for €24.95 a month, and TIM Tourist also reaches 300 GB with its €5 add-on at activation. For unlimited data, look at travel eSIMs, which sell unlimited Italy plans for the days you choose. Verizon's TravelPass is unlimited too, but only the first 5 GB of each 24-hour session is high-speed.
Is TIM or Vodafone better in Italy?
Vodafone won more awards, and TIM won on consistency. In Opensignal's December 2025 Italy report, based on user data from September 1 to November 29, 2025, Vodafone won 9 of 16 awards, including download speed at 63.8 Mbps and reliability. TIM won Consistent Quality at 79.2%, plus the video and games awards. WindTre led on 5G availability.
