eSIM data not working abroad comes down to line settings

HelloRoam Editorial TeamLast updated:

The HelloRoam line needs several settings at once: turned on, chosen for mobile data, data roaming on, and Wi-Fi plus any VPN off while you test. Skip one and the eSIM looks broken when it isn't. Restart the phone, keep Wi-Fi off, and wait 2 to 5 minutes before testing again. Signal alone does not mean the internet works.

Match your symptom to the setting behind it

The status bar shows 4G or 5G, but no page or app loads.
Signal is not data. Check which line is picked for mobile data, and that roaming is on for the HelloRoam line.
Nothing loads, and Wi-Fi or a VPN is still switched on.
Turn Wi-Fi off and turn any VPN off, then test again. Either one hides what the eSIM is doing.
The eSIM shows in your settings, but its line looks switched off.
Turn the line on. Installed only means the eSIM is on the phone, not that it carries data.
One app fails while websites and other apps load fine.
The eSIM has internet. Update that app, restart it or the phone, and check any VPN or content filter.
The line reads No Service, or emergency calls only.
The phone is not on a network at all. Work through the no-service guide instead of this one.

Once your eSIM connects, its QR code stops working

Your HelloRoam eSIM is in use from its first connection to a supported network in your destination. A line left on at home, or one that registers during a layover on a network your plan does not cover, does not count. After that, its QR code can't be used again, so never delete it. To check, open My eSIMs on the website. Active on the card, or Activated with an Activated On date in the details, means the eSIM is in use. Active can show a little before the first connection, so treat Active as in use. Ready or Not Activated is not proof that it has never connected, so never decide from those. The HelloRoam app shows no label for this, so don't use the app to decide. Its Install eSIM on this device button can stay visible after first use, and that is not proof you can install it again.

Set your mobile data line on each phone

iPhone

Every switch sits on the HelloRoam line's own page, except the mobile data choice one level up.

  1. Open Settings > Cellular and tap the HelloRoam line.
  2. Turn on Turn On This Line.
  3. Turn on Data Roaming on that same page.
  4. Go back, tap Cellular Data, and choose the HelloRoam line.
  5. Turn off Allow Cellular Data Switching.
  6. Leave the phone set to pick a network on its own.
  7. Turn Wi-Fi off, turn any VPN off, then open a website.
  8. Restart the phone, keep Wi-Fi off, and wait 2 to 5 minutes.

Samsung

Samsung keeps the line and the data choice in one menu, and roaming in another.

  1. Open Settings > Connections > SIM manager.
  2. Turn the HelloRoam eSIM on.
  3. Set Mobile data to the HelloRoam eSIM.
  4. Turn off the switch that moves mobile data to another SIM by itself.
  5. Open Settings > Connections > Mobile networks.
  6. Turn roaming on for the HelloRoam eSIM there.
  7. Turn Wi-Fi off, turn any VPN off, then open a website.
  8. Restart the phone, keep Wi-Fi off, and wait 2 to 5 minutes.

Pixel

Pixel gathers all four switches on the HelloRoam line's page, under the SIM list.

  1. Open Settings > Network & internet > SIMs and tap the HelloRoam line.
  2. Turn on Use SIM.
  3. Turn on Mobile data.
  4. Turn on Roaming.
  5. Turn off the switch that moves mobile data to another SIM by itself.
  6. Turn Wi-Fi off, turn any VPN off, then open a website.
  7. Restart the phone, keep Wi-Fi off, and wait 2 to 5 minutes.

Other Android

Menu names change by maker and Android version, so look for the same switches.

  1. Open Settings > Network & internet > Mobile network.
  2. Open the HelloRoam line's own page.
  3. Turn that line on.
  4. Set it as the SIM used for mobile data.
  5. Turn on Roaming for that line.
  6. Turn off the switch that moves mobile data to another SIM by itself.
  7. Turn Wi-Fi off, turn any VPN off, then open a website.
  8. Restart the phone, keep Wi-Fi off, and wait 2 to 5 minutes.

Still offline after every setting is on

  1. Check that you changed the HelloRoam line and not the home SIM. Roaming can be on for one line and off for the other, and it is easy to open the wrong tab.
  2. Names like Primary or Secondary don't tell you which line is HelloRoam. Match the line's ICCID with the one in the HelloRoam app, then rename the line so it is obvious.
  3. In the app, tap More Detail on the eSIM's card, then About your eSIM, to find the ICCID. It can show as N/A.
  4. Ignore the network name on screen. It can be the eSIM's own label rather than the name of the local network.
  5. Leave the APN settings alone. Don't add or edit them yourself. A name that looks odd on that screen does not mean it is wrong.
  6. If you have not reached your plan's destination yet, no data is normal. The eSIM usually starts working once it connects to a supported network there.
  7. If data loads but crawls, run a speed test with Wi-Fi off, the HelloRoam line picked for mobile data and roaming on. Send us the result.
  8. If every check passes and data still doesn't load, it needs a technical check by support.

Settings to fix before anything else

  • Work through the settings checks above first. Deleting the eSIM is never a fix for a connection problem.
  • If the eSIM already shows in your settings, it is installed. Don't scan the QR code again, because the fix is in the settings.
  • Most QR codes work only once. Deleting an eSIM that has already connected can stop you from ever installing it again.
  • Remove it and install it again with the same QR code or activation code only if you know it has never connected. That means a supported network in your destination.

Send us these details about the line

Email help@helloroam.com once every check above passes. Screenshots of your settings tell us more than a description, so send what you can.

  • Your order number
  • Your phone make and model
  • The country and city you are in now
  • A screenshot of the HelloRoam line's settings showing the line, data roaming and the mobile data choice
  • On Samsung: screenshots of SIM manager and Mobile networks
  • A screenshot of the network selection screen
  • What you already tried: Wi-Fi off, VPN off, restart, and how long you waited
  • The exact error text, if you see one
  • If only one app fails: which app, and whether websites open
  • If you have more than one eSIM: the ICCID shown for the HelloRoam line
  • Crop any QR code out of your screenshots before you send them

Questions about data that will not load

What is cellular data switching?

It is the setting that lets your phone move mobile data to another line on its own. On iPhone it reads Allow Cellular Data Switching, and other phones name it differently. Turn it off and mobile data stays on the line you picked, so the HelloRoam line keeps carrying it while you travel.

Why does my phone show 4G or 5G but I still have no internet?

The icon only means the phone may be on a network. It does not show data is reaching the HelloRoam line. Check which line is picked for mobile data, and that roaming is on for the HelloRoam line rather than the home SIM. The network name on screen can be the eSIM's own label instead of the local network's, so that tells you nothing either.

Why does only one app not work when everything else has internet?

Open a website and try another app first. If those load, the e-sim has internet and the problem is that one app. Update the app, then restart it or the phone, and check any VPN or content filter. If no app or website loads at all, go back to the settings checks above and work through them again.

Can a VPN stop my eSIM's data from working?

Yes. Turn any VPN off before you test, and turn Wi-Fi off too. With either one on, the result cannot show whether the e SIM itself carries data. A fair test needs four things at once: Wi-Fi off, VPN off, the HelloRoam line chosen for mobile data, and data roaming on for that line.

Is No Service the same problem as having no internet?

No. No Service, or emergency calls only, means the phone is not on a network at all, so the network checks in the no-service guide come first. This page is for a phone that shows a network and still loads nothing. A 4G or 5G icon means the phone may be registered, but it never shows the internet works.
