No signal on your eSIM means it has not joined a network yet

HelloRoam Editorial TeamLast updated:

No service or SOS-only means your eSIM has not registered on a network yet; slow E or 3G means it has, just weakly. Check the line, data roaming and mobile data setting first, then run one manual network scan. If nothing connects after a restart, send support the network list and your location.

From the status bar to the right fix

No service, or no network name at all on the HelloRoam line
Turn the line on, turn data roaming on for it, and set it as your mobile data line.
SOS, or emergency calls only
Your phone has not registered on a supported network yet. Run the manual network scan for your phone below.
An E or 3G icon, and pages crawl
You are on a network, just a slow one. Test with Wi-Fi off and note the signal type.
4G or 5G showing, but no page will load
This is not a signal problem. Our no-internet guide covers it.
A network name you do not recognize on the HelloRoam line
That can be the eSIM's own label, not the local operator. Judge it by whether data loads.

Run a manual network scan on your phone

iPhone

Those line settings live under Settings > Cellular on an iPhone. The scan below is a test, not a new setting to keep.

  1. Open Settings > Cellular and tap the HelloRoam line.
  2. Turn Wi-Fi off and switch off any VPN before you test.
  3. Open the line's network selection setting.
  4. Turn the automatic option off.
  5. Wait for the full list of networks to appear.
  6. Screenshot the whole list before you tap anything on it.
  7. Tap one network and wait 2 to 5 minutes.
  8. If it does not connect, go back and try the next one.

Samsung

Galaxy phones keep the line settings under Settings > Connections > SIM manager. The scan below is a test, not a new setting. If Select automatically flips itself back on, or the list comes up empty, restart the phone before you try again.

  1. Open Settings > Connections > Mobile networks.
  2. Turn Wi-Fi off and switch off any VPN.
  3. Open the screen that lists the network operators.
  4. Turn Select automatically off.
  5. Wait for the scan to finish listing every network it finds.
  6. Screenshot the full list before you pick anything.
  7. Pick one network and wait 2 to 5 minutes.
  8. If it does not connect, go back and try the next one.

Pixel

Pixel keeps the line settings under Settings > Network & internet > SIMs. Automatic selection is the normal setting for a travel eSIM, so run this scan once as a test. If the list comes up empty, restart the phone before you scan again.

  1. Open Settings > Network & internet > SIMs.
  2. Tap the HelloRoam line.
  3. Turn Wi-Fi off and switch off any VPN.
  4. Turn off the setting that picks a network automatically.
  5. Wait for the full list of networks to load.
  6. Screenshot the list before you choose a network.
  7. Choose one network and give it 2 to 5 minutes.
  8. If it does not connect, come back and try another one.

Other Android

Menu names change from brand to brand, so look for the wording closest to each step. The scan is a test, not a new setting. An empty list means restart the phone and scan again.

  1. Open Settings > Network & internet > Mobile network.
  2. Turn Wi-Fi off and switch off any VPN.
  3. Find the screen that lists network operators.
  4. Turn the automatic option off.
  5. Wait for the scan to finish before you read the list.
  6. Screenshot the full list before you tap a network.
  7. Tap one network and wait 2 to 5 minutes.
  8. If it does not connect, go back and try the next one.

When no network answers at all

  1. Check the destination on your order. A country plan covers one destination, while regional and global plans cover a set list, and outside that there is no supported network to join.
  2. On a phone with two lines, make sure the settings and the network list you opened belong to the HelloRoam line, not the line from your home carrier.
  3. With more than one eSIM installed, match the ICCID first so you test the right line.
  4. On an Android phone, open the network mode setting and pick the option that includes 5G or LTE.
  5. After any network change, restart the phone, keep Wi-Fi off and wait 2 to 5 minutes before you judge it.
  6. If the line shows E or 3G rather than nothing, you are connected on a slow network. Test with Wi-Fi off and data roaming on, run a speed test, then note the signal type and the network name.
  7. Leave the APN settings alone. Do not delete the eSIM and do not scan its QR code again, because a network problem never calls for either.
  8. When nothing on the list connects, or the list stays empty after a restart, stop testing and write in with the screenshot and where you are.

The details support needs to trace a network

When the checks and the scan change nothing, email help@helloroam.com. Send these details in the first message so nobody has to ask you for them.

  • Your order number.
  • Your phone make and model.
  • The country and city you are in right now.
  • A map screenshot zoomed out far enough to show the area around you, which matters most near a border, on an island or at a port.
  • A screenshot of the full network list from the scan, taken before you picked anything.
  • Which networks you tried, and what happened after each one.
  • What the line shows now: no service, SOS, emergency calls only, E, 3G, 4G or 5G, plus the network name on screen.
  • If service is slow rather than missing: a speed test result taken with Wi-Fi off.
  • A screenshot of the HelloRoam line's settings showing the line on, data roaming on and the mobile data choice.
  • Whether Wi-Fi and any VPN were off while you tested, and whether you restarted the phone.
  • Your phone's software version, if we ask for it.
  • If you have more than one eSIM on the phone: the ICCID shown for the HelloRoam line.
  • Crop any QR code out of your screenshots before you send them.

Signal and network questions

Why does my eSIM say no signal?

No signal means your phone has not registered on a network it is allowed to use. That is a network problem, not a broken install. Start with the line itself: it has to be switched on, with data roaming on and mobile data pointed at it. If all three look right, your e SIM needs a manual network scan to show what is actually reachable where you stand.

What does 'Turn On This Line' mean on my iPhone?

Turn On This Line is the switch that powers the HelloRoam line itself, before any network setting matters. Find it under Settings > Cellular after you tap the line. If that switch is off, the line cannot register anywhere, and no amount of scanning will help. Check it first, then check data roaming for the same line.

Why is my eSIM signal so bad and what does eSIM signal mean?

A bad signal is a different problem from no service. An E or 3G icon means your phone did find a network, just a slow one, so the connection is there. Where you stand changes what it can reach, most of all near a border, on an island, in a rural area or at an airport. Move, test again with Wi-Fi off, and note the signal type and the network name.

Why does my phone say SOS only?

SOS, or emergency calls only, means your phone has not registered on a supported network yet. It is a network problem, not a bad install. Do not delete the eSIM and do not scan its QR code again. Check the line settings first, then run one manual network scan and give each network you pick 2 to 5 minutes.

Is it normal for my eSIM to show the wrong network name?

Yes. The name on the HelloRoam line can be the e-sim's own label rather than the local operator it is using. Treat it as a nickname, not proof of which network you joined. Judge the connection by whether data actually loads. If nothing loads and the line still says no service, run the manual scan and screenshot the list.
