eSIM activation problems start with the error on your screen
A HelloRoam eSIM install typically fails for one of four reasons. The eSIM is already on the phone, the phone model has no eSIM support, the phone is carrier locked, or the network blocks the setup. Read the exact error on screen, then check those four in order.
The error text tells you which check to run
- Your phone shows an activation error while the eSIM installs.
- Screenshot the exact words before you leave the screen. The message decides the next check.
- A HelloRoam line is already in your phone's list of lines.
- Stop installing. The eSIM is already on the phone, so check its settings instead of scanning again.
- The phone says the eSIM is not supported, or not compatible.
- Check the exact model number and the carrier lock screen before you accept that.
- The install spins, stalls, or the phone refuses the code.
- Restart the phone, then install again on different Wi-Fi or a phone hotspot.
- The install fails again on a second network.
- Stop retrying. Email help@helloroam.com with the evidence listed below.
The same code works only before the first connection
Your eSIM is in use from the moment it first connects to a supported network in your destination, not from the moment it installs. To check, sign in on our website, open My eSIMs, and open the plan's details. Activated On with a date, or Active on the card, means it is in use: that code is finished and cannot install the eSIM again, so never delete it. Not Activated with a Purchase Date is not proof of the opposite. The website reads a stamp the system adds when the eSIM is enabled or first connects, so it can lag. If you are not sure, leave the eSIM alone and email help@helloroam.com. Deleting an eSIM is never a fix for an install problem, at either stage.
Retry the install on your phone
iPhone
Two checks and one retry, all from Settings.
- Open Settings, tap General, then tap About.
- Read the exact model number there. The name on the box decides nothing.
- Check that same screen for whether a carrier has locked the phone.
- Restart the phone, then join a different Wi-Fi network.
- Open Settings and tap Cellular.
- Tap Add eSIM, then scan your QR code.
- Or install from the HelloRoam app on this iPhone, with no code to scan.
Samsung
Samsung lists and adds eSIMs on the same screen.
- Restart the phone, then join a different Wi-Fi network.
- Open Settings and tap Connections.
- Tap SIM manager and read the eSIMs already on the phone.
- Tap Add eSIM, then scan your QR code.
- For the model number, open Settings and tap About phone.
Pixel
Pixel keeps the install behind the SIMs screen.
- Restart the phone, then join a different Wi-Fi network.
- Open Settings and tap Network & internet.
- Tap SIMs and read the lines already on the phone.
- Choose to add a SIM, then tap Set up an eSIM.
- For the model number, open Settings and tap About phone.
Other Android
Menu names change by brand and Android version. Look for the closest match.
- Restart the phone, then join a different Wi-Fi network.
- Open Settings and tap Network & internet.
- Tap Mobile network and read the lines already on the phone.
- Add a new eSIM from the SIM settings there, then scan your QR code.
- For the model number, open Settings and tap About phone.
Safe things to try before you write in
- Install at home over your own Wi-Fi before you travel, instead of at the airport.
- Public Wi-Fi at airports, hotels, offices and filtered networks can stop the phone reaching the service that sets the eSIM up.
- If Wi-Fi keeps failing, run the install over a phone hotspot instead.
- Lost the code? It stays in the HelloRoam app: open the My eSIM tab, then the eSIM's details.
- If a HelloRoam line is already in the list, the eSIM is installed. Our qr-code-not-valid guide takes it from there.
- If the model number has no eSIM support, no retry will work. Our compatible devices page covers that.
- If a carrier locked the phone, the unlock has to come from them. Nothing else gets past it.
- A phone that already stores a lot of eSIMs can refuse a new one. Never delete the HelloRoam eSIM to make room.
- Buying a second eSIM does not get past the same block, and the same scan gives the same error.
Run these checks before a retry
- Check whether a HelloRoam line already appears in your phone's list of lines. That check comes before any other step here.
- Change something before you retry. The same scan, on the same phone and network, usually repeats the same error.
- Check My eSIMs first. Activated On, or Active on the card, means stop: that eSIM is in use.
- Ready, Not Activated and Purchase Date are not permission to remove it. The stamp can lag behind the phone, so if you are unsure, email help@helloroam.com instead.
- Never delete the HelloRoam eSIM to make room for another one. If the phone looks full, write to us before you remove anything else.
Evidence that gets an install fixed faster
Email help@helloroam.com while the error is still on the screen. A screenshot tells us more than a description does.
- Your order number.
- Your phone make and model, and the exact model number.
- The exact error message, or a screenshot of it.
- On iPhone: a screenshot of Settings > General > About showing Carrier Lock.
- Whether a HelloRoam line already shows in your phone's list of lines.
- The kind of connection you installed over: home Wi-Fi, hotel, airport, office, other public Wi-Fi or a hotspot.
- What you already tried, including the restart and any other Wi-Fi, and how many attempts.
- The country and city you are in now.
- Crop any QR code out of your screenshots before you send them.
Install error questions, answered
Why does my eSIM activation keep failing?
Repeat failures usually trace back to one of four things, checked in order. The eSIM may already be on the phone, which looks like a failure but is not. That exact phone model may not support eSIM. A carrier lock blocks any travel eSIM until the carrier removes it. Or the network you install over is blocking the download. Work through them in that order instead of scanning the same code again.
Why is my iPhone stuck on 'Activating...' when installing an eSIM?
A spinner with no error text still means a network problem, not an account problem. Airport, hotel and office Wi-Fi often blocks the connection an eSIM needs to activate, so the same network gives you the same wait twice in a row. A restart combined with a switch to another network, including your phone's own hotspot, usually breaks the loop. Even an unlocked, eSIM-ready phone can get stuck this way.
Why is my eSIM not activating?
An eSIM that finishes installing is only saved on the phone, not yet working. Turn the HelloRoam line on, turn on its data roaming, and set it as your mobile data line. Skip any one of those three and you have an installed e-sim with no data. My eSIMs can show an Activated On date from the moment the line is switched on. That means treat it as in use, not that your days have started.
Does 'Unable to Activate eSIM' always mean my iPhone is incompatible or locked?
No, that message does not show either one. It only means the phone rejected the eSIM at that moment, and a blocked network or a phone full of profiles can trigger the same message. The exact model number, not the message, decides whether the phone can use eSIM. A carrier lock is a separate, provable fact on the phone itself, not something the message confirms. Rule both out before you accept either explanation.
My eSIM won't activate on my iPhone 16. Is that model not supported?
The model name on the box settles nothing, in either direction. Support depends on the exact model number, and some regional versions of the same phone ship with no e SIM support at all. Compare your model number against our compatible devices page instead of guessing from the name. A phone without that support fails every install, no matter how many times you scan the code.
