Tanzania has several mobile operators: Vodacom Tanzania, Airtel Tanzania, Tigo Tanzania (part of Axian), TTCL Mobile, and Halotel. Vodacom and Airtel have the widest coverage. HelloRoam eSIMs connect via Vodacom Tanzania and its partner networks.
4G LTE covers Dar es Salaam, Arusha, Moshi, Mwanza, Dodoma, and all regional capitals. Zanzibar Town (Stone Town) on Unguja Island has solid 4G. The ferry crossing between Dar es Salaam and Zanzibar loses signal in open water mid-crossing.
Safari areas follow the same pattern as Kenya. The Serengeti has 4G near Seronera and some lodge areas, with no signal in the open plains. The Ngorongoro Crater rim towns have coverage, but signal weakens on the crater descent road. The Masai villages on the crater rim have variable 3G. Tarangire National Park near Arusha has some signal near entry gates. The southern circuit parks, Ruaha and Selous (now Nyerere National Park), are much more remote with very limited connectivity even at camp.
Kilimanjaro: Moshi and the Marangu Gate area have 4G. Signal weakens above 3,000 meters on the mountain. The summit zone above Kibo Hut has no reliable coverage. Download offline topographic maps for your Kilimanjaro route before the starting gate. Australian travellers should confirm their handset is unlocked and supports the local network bands.
