Top up an eSIM in the HelloRoam app without a new QR code

HelloRoam Editorial TeamLast updated:

The HelloRoam app adds data to your existing eSIM when you top up: open My eSIM, tap Top up on that eSIM's card, and pay. The new data joins what's left, and the end date moves out, on the same eSIM with no new QR code. You can top up before first use too, as long as it hasn't expired.

Low on data or low on days

The card in the app shows little or no data left.
Tap Top up on that card. The data joins what is left on the same eSIM.
Plenty of data left, but the end date on the card is close.
Top up anyway. The end date moves out by the days you buy.
The end date has already passed and the eSIM sits under Expired.
Read the date on the card before you pay. The Top up button does not check it.
Data and days both look fine, but nothing loads.
Adding data will not help. Read the guide for an eSIM that worked and then stopped.
The card has no Top up button at all.
Sign in first. If it is still missing, that plan may not take more data.

Top up in the app on your phone

iPhone

The app is the same on every phone. On iPhone, an Apple Pay button can appear beside Continue and pay without opening the next screen.

  1. Open the HelloRoam app and tap My eSIM.
  2. Sign in if you see the sign-in panel instead of your eSIMs.
  3. Stay on the Current tab and find that eSIM's card.
  4. Tap Top up on that card.
  5. Pick data on a data plan, or days on an unlimited plan.
  6. Check the summary at the bottom of the sheet, then tap Continue.
  7. On the Topup Checkout screen, check your email address and pick a payment method.
  8. Tap the pay button and finish in the payment sheet. A message confirms it.

Samsung

The app is the same on every Samsung phone. No step here changes with the model, and there is no Apple Pay button.

Pixel

Pixel runs the same app and the same screens. There is no Apple Pay button, and no step changes.

Other Android

These steps are the same on any Android phone, whatever the brand. Your payment sheet shows the methods your phone and your account support.

When the Top up button is missing

  1. Check that you are signed in. Your eSIMs, and the Top up button, only load once you are.
  2. If you cannot find the eSIM at all, look under Expired. A plan past its end date is listed there.
  3. If the button is missing on a card you can see, that plan probably cannot take more data. Write to help@helloroam.com if you think it should be there, or buy the plan you need instead.
  4. If the eSIM still has data and days left but nothing loads, more data will not fix it. Read the guide for an eSIM that worked and then stopped.
  5. Some of the top-up and checkout screens stay in English whatever language the app is set to. The buttons are still the ones named above.

What to include about a top-up

Write to help@helloroam.com if a top-up did not land, or if the Top up button is missing on a plan you think should take more data. Send this with your first message.

  • Your order number.
  • The email address on your HelloRoam account, the one the checkout screen fills in for you.
  • Which eSIM you topped up, and the destination it is for.
  • A screenshot of the eSIM's card showing the data left and the end date.
  • A screenshot of Topup details if the top-up went through.
  • The exact words of any message you saw, or a photo of it.
  • Your phone make and model.
  • The country and city you are in now.
  • Crop any QR code out of your screenshots before you send them.

Top-up questions from the app

What happens if I run out of data on eSIM?

Nothing loads, and it looks exactly like a fault. Check the card in the app first: it shows the data left and the end date. If either has run out, tap Top up on that card and add more. If both still look fine, the eSIM has a different problem, and adding data will not fix it. The guide for an eSIM that worked and then stopped covers that case.

What if there is no Top up button on my eSIM?

The Top up button only shows on plans that can take more data, so if it is missing, that plan most likely cannot. Check the dates first, because an expired plan cannot take a top-up either. If you think the button should be there, email help@helloroam.com with your order number. Otherwise buy the plan you need instead.

Can I top up an eSIM without reinstalling it or scanning a new QR code?

Yes. The data goes onto the e SIM already on your phone. There is no second eSIM and no new QR code to scan, and nothing to reinstall. Your end date moves out by the days you buy, so one eSIM can cover a longer trip. Open the HelloRoam app, pick the eSIM you are using, and choose a top-up.

Does my eSIM need to be activated before I can top it up?

No. You can add data to an e-sim you have not connected with yet, as long as it has not expired. The app does not make you use it first. One catch: the Top up button does not check the end date, so read the date on the card before you pay. A plan past its end date cannot take more data.

How to check eSIM data balance

The eSIM's card in the app's My eSIM tab shows the data left and the end date. Those two decide whether you need a top-up at all. After one goes through, the list reloads with the new total. Once you have topped up, tap More Detail on the card: Topup details lists each one, when the last was, and the data and days it added.
