HelloRoam, a travel eSIM company with data plans for Barbados, wrote this guide from the GOV.UK and Barbados Immigration Department pages, which we read again on 28 October 2026.
A British passport needs no visa, but the border checks your papers
The table follows the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office's Barbados entry requirements on GOV.UK and the Barbados Immigration Department's advice for visitors. The GOV.UK advice applies to full British citizen passports.
| Requirement | What the official sources say | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Visa | None needed to visit. | GOV.UK |
| Length of stay | You are told how long you can stay when you arrive. | GOV.UK |
| Passport | Valid for the planned length of your stay. | GOV.UK and the Immigration Department |
| Ticket | An onward or return ticket. The Immigration Department lists a return ticket to your country of residence. | GOV.UK and the Immigration Department |
| Where you will stay | Your intended address in Barbados. | Immigration Department |
| Money | Evidence of personal support, meaning you can support yourself during your stay. | Immigration Department |
| Arrival form | The online Immigration and Customs Form, for every traveller, available from 72 hours before arrival. | GOV.UK and the Immigration Department |
| Work | Not allowed without a work permit. | GOV.UK |
Barbados sets and enforces these rules, not the UK. If your circumstances do not fit the table, GOV.UK's advice is to contact the Barbados High Commission in London. Rules can change, so look at both official pages again shortly before you fly.
Two common claims the official pages do not back
A visa agency's Barbados page tells UK travellers that their passport must be valid for at least six months on entry, with a blank visa page, and that they can stay for up to six months. Neither figure appears on GOV.UK or on the Immigration Department's visitor page.
On the passport, GOV.UK asks only that it is valid for the planned length of your stay, and the department lists a passport valid for the duration of your trip. On the stay, there is no fixed allowance to count on. GOV.UK says you will be told how long you can stay when you arrive, so keep your return flight details ready to show.
GOV.UK also asks you to check with your airline or tour operator that your passport and travel documents meet requirements.
The immigration and customs form opens 72 hours before arrival
GOV.UK says all travellers must fill in an immigration and customs form online before they arrive. The Immigration Department adds the timing: the form becomes available 72 hours before your arrival in Barbados, and you can fill it in at a time and place that suits you.
Travel advice pages from two UK holiday brands say the form must be completed “72 hours before arrival”. Read that as the moment the window opens, not a deadline. Any time inside those 72 hours works, as long as you finish before you land.
- Wait for the window. Count back 72 hours from your landing time. That is when the form becomes available.
- Use the official address. The form lives at travelform.gov.bb, the site GOV.UK and the Immigration Department both link to.
- Keep the receipts. Once you finish, save the Immigration and Customs receipts to your phone or print them.
- Show them on arrival. Hand them to the immigration and customs officers along with your passport.
Neither GOV.UK nor the Immigration Department mentions a fee for the form. A site with a different address that offers to process it for you is not the official form.

Seventeen passports need a Barbados visa before booking
Most nationalities can visit Barbados without a visa. The exceptions sit on a country-by-country list kept by Barbados's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade. The May 2025 revision of that list marks a visa as required for nationals of Afghanistan, Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Dominican Republic, Eritrea, Haiti, Iran, Iraq, Kosovo, Laos, Libya, Myanmar, North Korea, Papua New Guinea, Somalia, Syria, Taiwan and Yemen.
Haiti's entry carries exceptions. No visa is needed for Haitian diplomatic and official passports, or for Haitian nationals who are permanent residents of the UK, the US, Canada or a Schengen country, or who hold a US green card. The ministry's visitor link still opens an older version dated August 2022, which does not include Kosovo, so use the newer one.
Barbados expects the visa before the trip is booked. The Immigration Department's visa requirements page says applicants should be granted permission to travel before booking and confirming travel, that processing takes three weeks, and that no progress updates are given. The department's services page says the entry visa process is now fully online, through its applicant portal. The visa page adds that Barbados missions abroad, including London, accept applications, and lists these fees:
- Single entry: US$107, for one entry within three months.
- Multiple entry: US$211, for several entries within six months.
The department asks for a completed Form J for each applicant, one passport photo, copies of the passport cover and photo page, a birth certificate (plus a marriage certificate where it applies), a cover letter to the Chief Immigration Officer giving the purpose, dates and length of the visit, and a letter from your employer, school or university. If you live outside your country of birth, as many UK residents do, include a copy of your UK work permit, student visa or residence permit. Any document not in English must come with a certified copy of its English translation. If you also have a US or UK visa appointment, add a copy of the appointment letter and book that appointment outside the three-week processing period.
The visa is issued as a letter, which airlines accept at check-in and Barbados immigration accepts on arrival. You only send your passport if you want the visa endorsed in it. A visa still does not guarantee entry: the immigration officer at the port makes the final decision.
Most passports UK residents hold need no Barbados visa either
Plenty of people who live in the UK travel on another country's passport. These are the ministry's terms for some of the most common ones. Find your own row on the list before you book, because the terms vary by nationality.
| Passport | Visa to visit? | What the list says about the stay |
|---|---|---|
| Irish | No | Up to six months |
| Polish, Romanian or Spanish | No | Up to three months in any six-month period, under the 2009 short-stay waiver between Barbados and the European Community. Not every EU row says this: Croatia's gives 28 days. |
| Indian | No | No limit given; visa waiver agreement since 16 May 2019 |
| Pakistani | No | No limit given; visa waiver agreement since 28 July 2022 |
| Nigerian | No | Up to six months |
| Bangladeshi | No | Up to six months |
| Ghanaian | No | Up to six months |
| Sri Lankan | No | Up to six months |
| Chinese | No | No limit given; visa abolition agreement since 27 May 2014 |
| American | No | Up to six months |
| Haitian (ordinary passport) | Yes, unless one of the exceptions above applies | Apply through the Immigration Department |
People often search for how to get a Barbados visa from India or Nigeria, but on this list neither nationality needs one for a visit. Entry is still granted by the immigration officer at the port. If your passport is not covered here, or you hold a British passport other than a full British citizen passport, ask the Barbados High Commission in London before you book.
Cruise passengers and short transits are exempt from the visa
The visa rule has exemptions that matter on cruise holidays and connecting flights. The Immigration Department exempts:
- cruise passengers arriving and leaving on the same ship;
- cruise passengers transferring between the airport and the cruise terminal;
- crew members going from the airport to their ship within 12 hours (an overnight stay needs a visa);
- passengers flying on to another destination within 12 hours, who stay in the arrival terminal until they are escorted to the departure lounge.
For a British passport none of this changes anything, because no visa is needed in the first place. If your Barbados trip is a fly-cruise, phone data at sea is a separate question, covered in our guide to mobile data on a cruise.
Staying longer takes an extension from the Immigration Department
To stay beyond the time you are given on arrival, GOV.UK says you must apply and pay for an extension through the Barbados Immigration Department. Overstaying is illegal, as is working without a work permit, and the authorities can fine or detain people who overstay.
The department's extension of stay requirements list what to bring to its headquarters:
- Form B, the application for permission to vary your period of stay;
- the $100 application fee shown on the page;
- a ticket valid for the full length of the longer stay;
- your valid passport, plus a copy of its photo page;
- one photo;
- any document that supports the request, such as a doctor's letter.
Remote work runs through the 12-month Welcome Stamp
For people who want to live on the island and work remotely, Barbados runs a separate visa, the Barbados Welcome Stamp, open to individuals and families whose work is location independent. The official Welcome Stamp page sets out the terms:
- it lasts 12 months, and you can apply again when it ends;
- the application is made online;
- applicants need an annual income of at least US$50,000 over the 12 months;
- the non-refundable fee is US$2,000 for an individual or US$3,000 for a family;
- approval typically takes 7 business days, and the fee is due within 28 days of approval.
For the connectivity side of a long stay, see our page on mobile data for digital nomads. If your work runs on video calls, estimate your monthly data use before you choose a plan.
Under-18s travelling without a parent or guardian need a notarised letter
The Immigration Department sets out two cases for travellers younger than 18:
- Travelling alone: a written consent letter from a parent or legal guardian, signed by a notary public with the notary's seal. It must state how long the child is staying and name the adult who will meet them on arrival, with that person's contact details. A legal guardian also needs official proof of guardianship.
- With an adult who is not a parent or legal guardian: a consent letter from a parent, signed by a notary public with the seal, stating the length of stay and naming the accompanying adult with their address and phone number. If someone else will receive the child on arrival, the letter names them too.
The department asks you to travel with the original letter and a copy.
Mobile data matters after the immigration desk, not at it
You do not need mobile data at the immigration desk itself, because the Immigration Department accepts form receipts saved on your phone or printed on paper. Data matters a few minutes later, when you want directions to your accommodation, a message to whoever is collecting you, or the booking for your flight home. If you would rather use your UK SIM for that, compare UK roaming with an eSIM first.
Our Barbados plans run on FLOW's 4G network, according to the operator data behind them. If Barbados is one stop on a longer island trip, a HelloRoam Caribbean regional data plan keeps one eSIM working in Saint Lucia, Grenada, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Antigua and Barbuda and other islands.
Do the setup at home on Wi-Fi: check that your phone supports eSIM first, then follow the steps for installing an eSIM before you fly.

Questions travellers ask
Is there a departure tax when you leave Barbados?
Yes. GOV.UK says every passenger aged 2 or over pays a departure tax of 55 Barbados dollars (27.50 US dollars), plus 70 US dollars per person when flying outside the Caribbean, or 20 US dollars within it. Most airlines include it in the ticket price, so check with your airline or tour operator.
Do I need a yellow fever certificate to enter Barbados?
Only if you arrive from a country listed as a yellow fever transmission risk, according to GOV.UK. If your route passes through another country first, check that list and TravelHealthPro's Barbados guide, both linked from GOV.UK's Barbados entry page, before you travel.
Can a British dual national enter Barbados on their other passport?
GOV.UK's Barbados advice covers travel on a full British citizen passport. On another passport, the Barbados ministry's list sets the terms for that nationality. Either way, GOV.UK reminds British citizens that they need a valid British passport or a certificate of entitlement to return to the UK.
