Which German Christmas Markets to Visit in 2026, and When They Open

Most German Christmas markets in 2026 open in the second half of November and close by Christmas Eve. Of the 14 big-name markets in this guide, two in Cologne open first, on Monday, Nov 16, and Nuremberg's Christkindlesmarkt opens last, on Friday, Nov 27, the day after Thanksgiving. Several Berlin markets and Cologne's Heumarkt keep going into January 2027.

Nuremberg's organizers always open on the Friday before the first Sunday of Advent, and the first Sunday of Advent falls on Nov 29 this year. Five markets in the table open a week or more earlier: Cologne's cathedral market and Markt der Engel on Nov 16, then Munich, Aachen and Rothenburg on Nov 20. A trip in the week before Thanksgiving already has plenty to see.

Totensonntag on Nov 22 closes the early markets for a day

Totensonntag, which translates as Sunday of the Dead, is the Sunday before Advent. In 2026 it falls on Nov 22, and the markets that open early pause for it. The City of Munich says its Christkindlmarkt closes that day, like all the other Christmas markets in town. Cologne's cathedral market and Markt der Engel close too, Rothenburg's 2026 calendar skips the date, and Aachen opens only from 6 PM to 9 PM.

If you land that weekend, do your market rounds on Saturday, Nov 21, and use Sunday to change cities. Munich's market faces this for the first time. Starting in 2026, it opens on the Friday before Totensonntag, so it runs longer than before. Double-check any Munich dates you find on older trip lists.

Christmas Eve ends most markets, but Berlin and Cologne keep going

Nuremberg's organizers trace the idea that the Christkind brings children's gifts to Martin Luther, who moved gift-giving in his household from St. Nicholas Day, Dec 6, to Christmas Eve. The markets wind down as that evening nears. Nuremberg, Dresden and Munich close at 2 PM on Dec 24. Of the markets in this guide, Frankfurt ends first, on Dec 22. Aachen, Leipzig, Stuttgart and Rothenburg end on Dec 23, and so do Cologne's cathedral market, Markt der Engel and the Alter Markt half of Heinzels Wintermärchen.

If your trip runs past Christmas, plan on Berlin or Cologne. visitBerlin's market listings show three markets open until Jan 3, 2027: the Berliner Weihnachtszeit at the Rotes Rathaus (Red City Hall), the market at the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church and the Winter Market on Schlossplatz by the Humboldt Forum. The WeihnachtsZauber at Gendarmenmarkt runs until Dec 31 and ends with a New Year's Eve fireworks show. Charlottenburg Palace closes on Dec 24 but reopens from noon to 10 PM on Dec 25 and 26, then ends on Dec 27.

In Cologne, the Heumarkt half of Heinzels Wintermärchen stays open until Jan 10, 2027, with a break on Dec 24 and 25. Its ice rink, set among the stalls, also runs well into January.

Dresden runs more stalls, while Nuremberg has the famous opening night

Both cities claim deep roots, in different ways. The City of Dresden calls the Striezelmarkt Germany's oldest Christmas market, and 2026 brings its 592nd edition. Nuremberg's organizers date the Christkindlesmarkt's roots to 1530 and its first written mention to 1678.

Pick Nuremberg for the opening night and a range its organizers keep traditional on purpose: gingerbread, fruit bread, Rauschgold angels, nativity scenes, tree ornaments, candles and toys. Pick Dresden for Ore Mountain wood crafts, Stollen, a bigger market and two extra days at the start of the season.

Different goals point to different markets

These picks match a goal to a market, using the figures each organizer publishes.

Most stalls in this guide: Leipzig, where the city counts around 300 stalls in the historic old town. Stuttgart lists about 250, and Frankfurt more than 230.

Most visitors, among markets that publish a count: Stuttgart, with about 3.5 million in 2025, against 3.1 million for Munich's market in 2024. visitBerlin puts the WeihnachtsZauber at Gendarmenmarkt at more than 600,000 a year.

Oldest, by its own claim: Dresden's Striezelmarkt. Munich traces its market's roots to the 14th century and Leipzig to the 15th, while Stuttgart's first written record dates to 1692.

Opening night: Nuremberg, for the Christkind's prologue on the Main Market Square.

Nativity figures: Munich's Kripperlmarkt by the Alter Peter church, which the city calls probably the largest market of its kind in Germany.

Krampus: Munich's Krampuslauf, where about 300 Krampus, Perchten and Klaus figures run through the city center. The 2026 run is on Sunday, Dec 13, from 3 PM to 5 PM.

A small old town: Rothenburg ob der Tauber's Reiterlesmarkt, set between City Hall and St. James' Church.

A tour in English: Frankfurt's tourism office lists a bookable English-language Christmas walk through the old town, daily at 4:30 PM from Nov 23 to Dec 22.

After Christmas: Berlin, or the Heumarkt in Cologne.

What to buy and eat changes from city to city

These are the specialties each organizer points to.

Nuremberg: Lebkuchen gingerbread, baked in the city for more than 600 years, shiny Rauschgold angels and Zwetschgenmännle, little figures made of prunes. The organizers count more than 350 different prune figures, from 9 to 22 centimeters (about 3.5 to 8.7 inches) tall. For a warm drink, the organizers point to a blueberry mulled wine, with an alcohol-free version for kids.

Dresden: Dresdner Christstollen, Pulsnitz gingerbread, Ore Mountain handicrafts and the Pflaumentoffel, a small prune figure that Dresden treats as a lucky charm.

Frankfurt: Bethmännchen marzipan pastries, a mug of hot Apfelwein (apple wine) and Quetschemännchen, figures of dried plums and nuts held together with wire.

Munich: straw stars, glass pictures, wool slippers and honey, with vegan, gluten-free and lactose-free food at the stalls too.

The mug can be a souvenir on its own. Frankfurt designs a new market mug every year and calls it a sought-after collector's item. Dresden has issued a limited collector's mug since 2017, and the run for the 591st market in 2025 was exactly 591 mugs. Cologne's Markt der Engel serves every drink in reusable cups and glasses and uses no single-use cups at all.

Cards, entry fees and quiet hours differ by market

Cards are more common than some trip guides suggest. The City of Munich's market FAQ, updated for 2026, says 80 percent of traders at its Christkindlmarkt take cards, with a minimum spend of €1, €5 or €10 depending on the stall. Every common card works except American Express, so pack a Visa or Mastercard and carry some euros for stalls that take cash only.

Berlin's WeihnachtsZauber at Gendarmenmarkt charges €2 to get in for the 2026 season. Children under 12 enter free, and so does everyone on weekdays from noon to 2 PM, except on Dec 24, 25, 26 and 31. visitBerlin lists the Charlottenburg Palace and Rotes Rathaus markets as free to enter.

Timing changes the mood. visitBerlin's tip for Charlottenburg Palace is to come in the evening or on a weekend for the full atmosphere, or on a weekday afternoon for peace and quiet.

Deutsche Bahn sells the Deutschland-Ticket for €63 a month, and every fare in this section is its price as of October 2026. It covers buses, trams, subways, S-Bahn and regional trains in second class across Germany, so one bought in Munich also works in Frankfurt. It does not cover ICE, IC or EC long-distance trains, which need their own ticket.

Two rules matter on a short trip. The ticket is a subscription that runs by calendar month, not for 30 days from purchase. Cancel by the 10th and it ends that month; cancel later and it runs to the end of the next month. So a ticket started in late November and cancelled after Nov 10 runs through December too.

Deutsche Bahn's version lives in the DB Navigator app as a phone ticket, and you cancel it there as well. If it disappears from the app, Deutsche Bahn's fix is to add it again with the number from your activation email, so you need data on the spot.

For a single day trip, a state day ticket costs less, and one ticket covers up to five people. The Bayern-Ticket covers regional trains and nearly all buses in Bavaria, home to Munich, Nuremberg and Rothenburg, for one day from €34 for one person or €44 for two in second class. The Sachsen-Ticket covers Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia from €35 for one person, which suits a Dresden and Leipzig pairing. Both start at 9 AM on weekdays, or at midnight on weekends, public holidays and Dec 24 and 31, and run until 3 AM the next day.

To keep train time short, base yourself in one region: Cologne and Aachen in the west, Munich, Nuremberg and Rothenburg in Bavaria, or Dresden and Leipzig in Saxony. Nuremberg's market notes that the city sits halfway between Munich and Frankfurt, so it also works as a link between Bavaria and the Frankfurt area.

The Deutschland-Ticket even reaches a few stations across the border, and Deutsche Bahn lists Salzburg among them. If your route continues into Austria, HelloRoam's multi-country plan for Europe keeps the same eSIM working on both sides of the border, so there's nothing to swap on the train.

Mobile data covers what market Wi-Fi leaves out

Dresden's market page listed a free Wi-Fi network at the Striezelmarkt last season, which is handy while you stand on the Altmarkt. Away from the square, your phone still has to load DB Navigator tickets, platform changes and the market maps that Cologne's cathedral market and Leipzig post online. Your home carrier's day pass is one way to cover that, and our roaming cost comparison shows how it stacks up against an eSIM.

If a US carrier sold you your phone, check that it is unlocked. Apple's unlocking guide says only your carrier can unlock an iPhone, and that unlocking lets you use it with different carriers.

Before you fly, look up your model in our list of phones that take an eSIM, then set up the eSIM on your phone while you still have home Wi-Fi. Our Germany plans connect to the O2 and Vodafone networks.
