Some of them land in the middle of the night: Turkish Airlines is due in at 02:50 and Kenya Airways' connection from Nairobi at 02:40. A HelloRoam Zanzibar eSIM, installed at home, puts your e-visa email and your transfer driver's messages on your phone as the plane taxis in.
No airline flies nonstop from the UK to Zanzibar
FlightAware's flight finder showed no nonstop flight to Zanzibar from any of 19 UK airports on 2 October 2026, and the winter schedules it listed on 28 October had none either. Every route changes planes once, in Africa, the Gulf, Istanbul or Amsterdam.
The closest thing to a direct flight will be British Airways' new seasonal service from Gatwick, which starts on 29 May 2027. BA's timetable has it leaving Gatwick at 09:05, landing at Kilimanjaro at 20:20 and reaching Zanzibar at 22:25 local time, about 11 hours 20 minutes in all, with a stop of about an hour. BA says the flights will run three times a week until 31 October 2027, so check its timetable for your dates.
On the way home, BA's Kilimanjaro page says the flight starts at Kilimanjaro and stops at Zanzibar for two hours, with passengers off the plane while it is cleaned and refuelled, before going on to Gatwick. The same timetable has it leaving Zanzibar at 00:25 on Tuesdays, Fridays and Sundays and landing at Gatwick at 07:55.
One-stop flights from Heathrow take 11 hours 25 minutes to 14 hours
These are the FlightAware schedules behind the opening answer, with Heathrow times in GMT as listed on 28 October 2026. Zanzibar's clocks sit at GMT+3 throughout the year (the WMO's Zanzibar entry lists no daylight saving), so since the UK clocks went back on 25 October 2026 the island is 3 hours ahead of the UK, until 28 March 2027.
| Change in | Airline | Leaves Heathrow | Lands in Zanzibar | Journey | Zanzibar flight runs |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Amsterdam | KLM | 06:30 | 20:55 same day | 11h 25m | Thu, Sun |
| Addis Ababa | Ethiopian Airlines | 20:15 | 10:55 next day | 11h 40m | Daily |
| Istanbul | Turkish Airlines | 11:20 | 02:50 next day | 12h 30m | Wed, Fri, Sun |
| Doha | Qatar Airways | 15:30 | 07:30 next day | 13h 00m | Daily |
| Abu Dhabi | Etihad | 20:55 | 13:35 next day | 13h 40m | Daily since 25 October |
| Dubai | Emirates, then flydubai | 22:00 | 14:40 next day | 13h 40m | Daily |
| Nairobi | British Airways, then Kenya Airways | 09:40 | 02:40 next day | 14h 00m | Most days |
Time on the ground between flights runs from 50 minutes in Doha to 3 hours 45 minutes in Nairobi. Several Zanzibar flights run on set days only, so the day you travel can choose the route for you.
Etihad is back on the route after a break of more than two years. The Zanzibar Airports Authority reported its first returning flight on 14 June 2026, with four flights a week from then on, and FlightAware shows it flying every day since 25 October. For a flight today, the live status on FlightAware or your airline's app is the figure to trust.
Distance calculators give much shorter answers, such as Airmilescalculator's 9 hours 11 minutes from Gatwick and Travelmath's 9 hours 42 minutes from London, because they estimate a nonstop flight that nobody operates. Plan around the full journey times in the tables, not the flying time.
Gatwick, Manchester, Birmingham and Edinburgh connect through Istanbul, Doha or Dubai
FlightAware listed these one-stop options from other UK airports on 28 October 2026, with UK times in GMT. The flydubai flight from Dubai to Zanzibar runs every day, and so has Qatar Airways' flight from Doha since 25 October. KLM also connects through Amsterdam from Birmingham on the days its Zanzibar flight runs.
| From | Change in | Leaves | Lands in Zanzibar | Journey |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Gatwick | Istanbul | 10:05 | 02:50 next day | 13h 45m |
| Gatwick | Dubai | 20:25 | 14:40 next day | 15h 15m |
| Manchester | Istanbul | 10:45 | 02:50 next day | 13h 05m |
| Manchester | Doha | 14:20 | 07:30 next day | 14h 10m |
| Manchester | Dubai | 20:40 | 14:40 next day | 15h 00m |
| Manchester | Abu Dhabi | 19:25 | 13:35 next day | 15h 10m |
| Birmingham | Amsterdam | 06:00 | 20:55 same day | 11h 55m |

| Birmingham | Dubai | 20:50 | 14:40 next day | 14h 50m |
| Edinburgh | Istanbul | 10:40 | 02:50 next day | 13h 10m |
| Edinburgh | Doha | 14:05 | 07:30 next day | 14h 25m |
| Edinburgh | Dubai | 20:50 | 14:40 next day | 14h 50m |

| Stansted | Dubai | 20:15 | 14:40 next day | 15h 25m |
From Glasgow and Newcastle, the finder listed KLM through Amsterdam on 28 October. From any other UK airport, plan on a first flight to one of the airports above, and check the days before you book.
Flights home leave Zanzibar in the early morning or the evening
These were the main ways back to Heathrow on 28 and 29 October 2026, with departures in Zanzibar time and arrivals in UK time (GMT).
| Change in | Airline | Leaves Zanzibar | Lands at Heathrow | Journey |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Istanbul | Turkish Airlines | 03:10 or 05:30 | 12:45 to 16:20 | 12h 35m to 13h 50m |
| Nairobi | Kenya Airways | 04:40 | 15:30 | 13h 50m |
| Addis Ababa | Ethiopian Airlines | 19:10 | 06:35 next day | 14h 25m |
| Doha | Qatar Airways | 17:15 | 06:25 next day | 16h 10m |
| Abu Dhabi | Etihad | 17:55 | 06:40 next day | 15h 45m |
| Dubai | flydubai, then Emirates | 21:35 | 11:40 next day | 17h 05m |
A 03:10 or 05:30 departure means an airport transfer in the middle of the night, so arrange it when you book your stay. Airlines can retime these flights from one season to the next, so plan the pick-up around the departure on your e-ticket.
February and June to September have the fewest rainy days
The 1971 to 2000 averages on the World Meteorological Organization's Zanzibar page show two wet spells on the island, March to May and then November and December.
| Month | Average high | Average low | Rainy days |
|---|---|---|---|
| January | 32°C | 23°C | 7 |
| February | 33°C | 23°C | 4 |
| March | 32°C | 23°C | 12 |
| April | 30°C | 24°C | 17 |
| May | 29°C | 23°C | 15 |
| June | 29°C | 22°C | 5 |
| July | 29°C | 21°C | 5 |
| August | 29°C | 20°C | 6 |
| September | 30°C | 20°C | 5 |
| October | 31°C | 21°C | 7 |
| November | 31°C | 22°C | 13 |
| December | 31°C | 23°C | 13 |
February has the fewest rainy days, with 4 on average, and June to September have 5 or 6 each. April is the wettest month by this measure, with 17. British Airways' new Zanzibar flights, from 29 May 2027, are timed for June to October, which it calls the main dry season.
Zanzibar asks for a visa, its own insurance and sometimes a yellow fever certificate
The list below follows the FCDO's guidance on entry to Tanzania, written for people on a full British citizen passport, as it stood on 28 October 2026, after its update of 20 October.
- Passport: it must be valid for at least 6 months after the date you arrive, with at least one blank page. If yours falls short, renew your UK passport online before you book.
- Visa: you need a tourist visa. The FCDO says to apply for an e-visa before you travel, though a single-entry visa is also issued on arrival at the main entry points. Tanzania's Immigration Services lists the ordinary visa at US$50, valid for up to 90 days, and processes online applications within ten days.
- Return ticket: you must be ready to show a return or onward ticket at border control.
- Health screening: the FCDO says everyone entering Tanzania passes through mpox screening, in the form of a body temperature check, at every point of entry.
- Health form and Ebola screening: every traveller fills in the Travellers Health Surveillance Form, before departure or on arrival. Since 17 October, Tanzania has also screened travellers from Ebola-affected countries more closely at every point of entry.
- Insurance: if Zanzibar is your first stop in Tanzania, you must buy the mandatory inbound travel insurance from the Zanzibar Insurance Corporation for your whole stay, up to 92 days, through the Visit Zanzibar website or on arrival. No other policy meets this rule, and you may be refused entry without it. The FCDO also advises having travel insurance that covers your own needs.
- Yellow fever: you need a vaccination certificate if you arrive from a country with a risk of yellow fever transmission. TravelHealthPro's Tanzania page adds that this covers travellers over 1 year old, and anyone who has transited for more than 12 hours through an airport in such a country.
Kenya and Ethiopia are both on NaTHNaC's list of yellow fever risk countries. Check the rule with TravelHealthPro if your trip includes time in Kenya, or a layover of more than 12 hours in Nairobi or Addis Ababa. On the way out, the Nairobi and Addis Ababa connections in the tables above are all shorter than 4 hours, far below the 12-hour line.
The FCDO bases this list on the most common kinds of trip, and Tanzania's own officials apply the rules at the border. Recheck it close to your departure date, and if your situation is unusual, ask the Tanzania High Commission in the UK.
Abeid Amani Karume airport is about 5 km from Zanzibar City

The Zanzibar Airports Authority says the airport sits about 5 km south of Zanzibar City, the island's capital, whose historic centre is Stone Town. It was known as Kisauni Airport and then Zanzibar International Airport until it was renamed in 2010, so older guides and booking pages may still use those names.
On a night arrival, have a transfer booked and waiting rather than looking for a taxi in the small hours.
Three points from the FCDO's safety and security advice help on arrival:
- Money: US dollars are widely accepted in tourist areas.
- Clothing: the FCDO advises dressing modestly throughout Tanzania and says women in shorts or sleeveless tops away from the resorts, particularly in Stone Town, may cause offence. Zanzibari authorities can fine you US$700 or more for clothing they consider inappropriate in public.
- Driving: a UK driving licence is valid in Tanzania for up to 6 months, and driving in Zanzibar also needs a local Zanzibar permit, which your hire car company can arrange.
Getting online in Zanzibar starts on your home Wi-Fi
Setting up at home saves a job at the airport after a long night. First, check your handset works with eSIM, then follow the eSIM install steps, and switch the line on once you land.
On 28 October 2026, the Tanzania plans on our Zanzibar page ran on the Airtel network, and our eSIM Tanzania page listed Airtel for the mainland too. If you would normally keep using your UK network abroad, see how an eSIM compares with roaming before you go.
If Zanzibar follows a safari in Kenya, HelloRoam's regional plan for Africa covers both countries on the same eSIM, which saves buying a second plan for the flight from Nairobi to the island.
Not sure what size of plan you need? Work out your data budget from the apps you expect to use each day.
Questions travellers ask
Do I need separate visas for Zanzibar and mainland Tanzania?
No. Tanzania's Immigration Services says one visa covers both: select your first destination on the form and you can visit the other without a new visa. The FCDO adds that you buy the mandatory inbound insurance only for your first port of entry, Zanzibar or the mainland.
Can I fly into Kilimanjaro and home from Zanzibar?
Yes. For travel from 29 May 2027, British Airways sells trips from Gatwick that fly into Kilimanjaro and home from Zanzibar, but the journey between the two is not included in the ticket. Book that hop on its own, and check which airlines fly it on your dates.
