These flights land in the afternoon or evening, Jamaican time, and the first job after Customs is finding your transfer. Add a HelloRoam Jamaica eSIM to your phone in the UK, and it can message your driver or map the road to your hotel from the arrivals hall. HelloRoam's live chat is open 24/7 if you need help with the setup.
Three direct routes link London with Kingston and Montego Bay
Direct flights from the UK use two airports: Norman Manley International in Kingston, the capital, and Sangster International in Montego Bay, Jamaica's second city. TUI says most holidaymakers stay in one of three resort areas: Montego Bay, Negril or Ocho Rios.
FlightAware's flight logs for those dates show the days each route ran and how long the flights took, from departure to arrival:
| Route | Airline | Days flown | Flight out | Flight home |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| London Gatwick to Kingston (KIN) | British Airways | Mon, Wed, Fri, Sat | 9h 01m to 9h 26m | 8h 11m to 8h 40m |
| London Heathrow to Montego Bay (MBJ) | Virgin Atlantic | Mon, Tue, Thu, Sat | 9h 16m to 9h 36m | 8h 13m to 8h 49m |
| London Gatwick to Montego Bay (MBJ) | TUI Airways | Thu, Fri | 9h 09m to 9h 35m | 8h 29m to 8h 41m |
Airline and airport pages quote longer times than the logs. British Airways gives 9 hours 45 minutes to Kingston, TUI gives 10 hours 30 minutes from Gatwick, and Manchester Airport lists 10 hours 15 minutes for Montego Bay.
Manchester Airport's Montego Bay destination guide doesn't name an airline or a season. TUI also flies direct to Montego Bay from Birmingham: FlightAware logged its Saturday flight, TOM854, on 19 and 26 September and 3 October 2026. Ask TUI whether a Birmingham or Manchester flight runs on your dates before you plan around it.
Heading for Montego Bay? Book Virgin Atlantic or TUI. Sangster International's own list of airlines names both, but not British Airways. BA's Jamaica page says it flies direct from Gatwick and Heathrow, while every Kingston flight in the logs left from Gatwick, so check the departure airport on your booking.
Outbound flights land by evening, and flights home land the next day
Every flight home leaves Jamaica in the late afternoon or at night. These are the local departure and arrival times in the same logs, which help when you book transfers at both ends:
| Flight | Departed (local time) | Arrived (local time) |
|---|---|---|
| BA, Gatwick to Kingston | 13:19 to 16:18 | 16:44 to 19:39 |
| Virgin Atlantic, Heathrow to Montego Bay | 17:00 to 18:11 | 20:26 to 21:48 |
| TUI, Gatwick to Montego Bay | 10:40 to 11:38 | 13:50 to 15:13 |
| BA, Kingston to Gatwick | 19:28 to 22:25 | 09:39 to 12:40 next day |
| Virgin Atlantic, Montego Bay to Heathrow | 23:06 to 00:09 | 13:19 to 14:34 next day |
| TUI, Montego Bay to Gatwick | 16:34 to 17:27 | 07:05 to 08:08 next day |
These are logged times, not a timetable, and airlines retime flights during the year. Plan around the times on your ticket, and check the airline's flight status page on the day you travel.
Jamaica stays on GMT minus 5 all year
Jamaica keeps Eastern Standard Time, 5 hours behind GMT, all year. The IANA time zone database records no daylight saving time there since 1983, so any change in the time difference comes from the UK side, on the UK clock change dates:
| UK clocks | Dates | When it's 12:00 in the UK, Jamaica is at |
|---|---|---|
| British Summer Time | Until 25 October 2026, and from 28 March 2027 | 06:00 (6 hours behind) |
| Greenwich Mean Time | 25 October 2026 to 28 March 2027 | 07:00 (5 hours behind) |
TUI's Thursday flight on 24 September shows what that means for a pick-up. It left Gatwick at 11:20, flew for about 9 hours 15 minutes and landed in Montego Bay at 14:36 local time, when it was 20:36 in the UK.
British Airways' Jamaica page gives the time zone as GMT -6, which is an hour out. Work from GMT -5 when you book an airport pick-up.
Montego Bay is driest in March, Kingston from January to March
Long-term averages from Jamaica's Meteorological Service, published on the World Meteorological Organization's weather site, show that the two arrival cities have different dry seasons. These are 1951 to 1980 averages for rainfall and the number of rain days:
| Month | Montego Bay rain | Rain days | Kingston rain | Rain days |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| January | 85 mm | 5 | 18 mm | - |
| February | 69 mm | 5 | 19 mm | - |
| March | 27 mm | 5 | 20 mm | - |
| April | 53 mm | 7 | 39 mm | - |
| May | 100 mm | 8 | 100 mm | - |
| June | 122 mm | 7 | 74 mm | - |
| July | 53 mm | 6 | 42 mm | - |
| August | 95 mm | 9 | 98 mm | - |
| September | 127 mm | 11 | 114 mm | - |
| October | 166 mm | 14 | 177 mm | - |
| November | 110 mm | 10 | 65 mm | - |
| December | 103 mm | 6 | 47 mm | - |
Montego Bay averages 27 mm of rain in March and 53 mm in April. December, when TUI says visitor numbers peak, averages 103 mm, nearly double July's 53 mm. Kingston is far drier in winter, with 18 mm to 20 mm a month from January to March.
Average highs in Montego Bay run from 27.9°C in January to 31.4°C in August, so the heat changes far less than the rain does.
The FCDO says hurricane season normally runs from June to November, and October is the wettest month in both cities in the WMO figures. For dry weather outside hurricane season, aim for March or April.
Read the FCDO's travel advice for Jamaica before you book, too. It says Hurricane Melissa made landfall as a major hurricane in October 2025, that all western parishes suffered significant damage, and that some communities are still without electricity and piped water.
British passport holders need no visa, but the C5 form comes first
As of 2 October 2026, the FCDO's entry requirements for Jamaica, written for travellers on a full British citizen passport, say:
- You don't need a visa to visit. You will usually be granted entry for up to 90 days, and the date you must leave is stamped in your passport.
- Your passport must be valid for the whole of your stay, with 2 blank pages for the entry and exit stamps. If it expires before your return date, renew it first. Our guide sets out the passport renewal costs and timings.
- Fill in the Immigration and Custom Form C5 online before you arrive, where you can. It sits on the Enter Jamaica website, run by Jamaica's Passport, Immigration and Citizenship Agency (PICA) and the Jamaica Customs Agency. The site asks you to verify your email address with a code before you start, so it's easier to do at home.
- Declare cash or travellers' cheques worth 10,000 US dollars or more on the C5 form. A customs officer will also give you a Financial Investigation Division Cross Border Form, and you'll need to show proof of where the money came from and say how you plan to use it.
- It is illegal to bring meat and dairy products into Jamaica.
- Arrival and departure taxes are usually included in your ticket.
- If you're arriving from a country listed as a yellow fever transmission risk, you must have a certificate showing you've had the yellow fever vaccination.
These rules are Jamaica's to set and enforce, and they can change between booking and boarding. Open the FCDO page once more a few days before your flight. If your situation doesn't fit the points above, the FCDO's advice is to contact the Jamaican High Commission in the UK.
Mobile data for Jamaica: set it up in the UK, switch it on after landing
On 29 October 2026, our Jamaica plans connected to Flow's 4G network. They are data-only, so a HelloRoam plan doesn't come with a Jamaican phone number or texts. WhatsApp and FaceTime calls run over the data, and your UK line can stay active alongside it on a dual SIM phone. If you're thinking of using your UK plan in Jamaica instead, check how an eSIM compares with roaming first.
- First, make sure your phone is unlocked and appears on the list of eSIM phones.
- At home, on Wi-Fi, scan the QR code from your email to add the eSIM.
- After landing, select the new line in Settings and switch Data Roaming on. The eSIM then joins the local network.

The install steps for iPhone and Android show each of these screens. Not sure which plan size to pick? Estimate your trip's data use from your daily hours of maps, messaging and video, and top up in Jamaica if you run low.
At Sangster, the taxi and transfer desks sit just past Customs
Sangster International's ground transport pages explain what happens after you collect your bags. After Customs, customer service staff greet you and direct you to your hotel lounge or transfer company. The transfer companies have desks in the Ground Transportation Arrivals Hall.
- Package transfers: the airport lists Virgin Atlantic Holidays with Amstar DMC at desks 9 and 10, and TUI Holidays at desk 13.
- Taxis: JUTA and JCAL, the two taxi companies at the airport, share one Authorised Airport Taxi desk just outside the Customs exit.
- Coaches: Knutsford Express has desk 36. Its Montego Bay Airport office serves passengers from 04:30 to 19:30 daily, and the company also has offices in Negril, Ocho Rios and Kingston.
That closing time matters on the evening flight. Virgin Atlantic's arrivals in the logs landed between 20:26 and 21:48, after the coach desk had shut, so pre-book a transfer if you're on that flight.
The FCDO advises using Jamaican Tourist Board (JTB) approved taxis and minibuses for airport transfers. Most hotels and resorts have JTB drivers, who carry photo ID and show a blue JTB sticker on the front windscreen.

From Norman Manley, most people take the Humming Bird route into Kingston
Two roads link Norman Manley International with Kingston. The FCDO's safety advice says there has been sporadic violence in recent years in the Mountain View area, on one of them, and that most people take the Humming Bird route via South Camp Road.
The same page says British nationals have been tracked and robbed on the way from the airport to private accommodation. If you don't know Kingston, the FCDO says not to drive in the city. Taxi apps such as Uber now work in some areas, including Kingston.
Questions travellers ask
Which Caribbean island has the shortest flight from the UK?
Of the Caribbean destinations in Manchester Airport's guides, St Lucia has the shortest flight, at 8 hours 14 minutes, followed by Barbados and Antigua at 8 hours 25 minutes each. The airport lists Montego Bay at 10 hours 15 minutes, so a Jamaica trip adds about 2 hours in the air.
Do I need an ESTA if I change planes in the US on the way to Jamaica?
Yes. The FCDO says that to enter or transit through the US, travellers on a British citizen passport need either an ESTA or a US visa, and you must have it before you travel. Sangster International's airline list includes American Airlines, Delta, United and JetBlue, so check this if your route connects in the US.
