Lapland Trip From the UK: Direct Flights, Costs and When to Go

A Lapland trip from the UK starts with a direct flight of just over three hours to Rovaniemi, Kittilä or Ivalo in Finnish Lapland. This winter, direct flights leave from 11 UK airports between late October and late March. Husky, reindeer and snowmobile rides usually run from late November or early December to early April, once the snow has settled.

Much of a Lapland trip runs through your phone, from transfer details and safari meeting points to aurora forecasts. A HelloRoam Finland eSIM gives you mobile data from the moment you land, with 24/7 support if anything needs sorting.

Direct flights to Lapland leave from 11 UK airports this winter

Rovaniemi's tourism site, Visit Rovaniemi, lists the scheduled routes into Rovaniemi Airport for winter 2026 to 2027. Finavia, which runs Lapland's airports, announced easyJet's three new UK routes to Lapland in June. Between them, these are the UK airports with a scheduled direct flight to Lapland this winter.

Apart from Ryanair's daily Stansted flight, most of these routes fly on two to five days a week, so match your dates to the flying days before you book anything else. British Airways also keeps its London Gatwick to Ivalo route this winter, Finavia says, and Visit Rovaniemi lists easyJet flights from Manchester to Kittilä too. Package companies charter their own planes from more airports. Santa Claus Trips, for one, lists departures from Aberdeen, Cardiff, East Midlands, Glasgow and Leeds Bradford.

Pick the airport by where you will stay. Rovaniemi is the airport for Santa Claus Village and the town itself. Kittilä serves the ski resorts of Levi, 15 km from the airport, and Ylläs, about 35 km away, according to Finavia. Ivalo serves Saariselkä and Lake Inari, and Finavia calls the village of Inari the capital of Sámi culture in Finland. Visit Finland points visitors to the Siida centre there to learn about the Sámi, the only indigenous people in the EU.

The flight from the UK to Lapland takes just over three hours

Ryanair's own timetable for November and December 2026 lists every departure and arrival on its five UK routes to Rovaniemi. Worked out from those times, flights out take 3 hours 5 minutes to 3 hours 20 minutes. Flights home take a little longer, at 3 hours 25 minutes to 3 hours 35 minutes.

Finland runs on Eastern European Time, according to the European Commission's page on EU time zones, which puts Lapland two hours ahead of the UK in winter. The 06:45 Stansted departure on 1 December 2026 lands in Rovaniemi at 12:00 local time, and you win the two hours back on the way home. easyJet, British Airways and Norwegian publish their own schedules, so check the times on your booking.

No direct flight from your airport? Finnair flies from Helsinki to Rovaniemi several times a day, all year, and Kittilä is about a two-hour drive from Rovaniemi, Visit Rovaniemi says. The Finnish rail operator VR also runs night trains from Helsinki to Rovaniemi, with tickets on sale up to 25 April 2027. A private cabin starts from €49 for the whole cabin, the trains have Wi-Fi, and the cabins have power sockets.

Snow, daylight and Santa decide the best month for a Lapland trip

The best month depends on what you want from the trip. The table averages the Finnish Meteorological Institute's monthly readings at its Rovaniemi railway station over the last ten winters, from November 2016 to March 2026. Daylight hours are Visit Rovaniemi's averages, and the mid-month sunrise and sunset times come from the safari company Lapland Safaris.

MonthAverage temperatureMildest to coldest month (10 winters)Daylight, mid-month
November-3.8°C0.3°C to -8.2°CAbout 5 to 7 hours
December-7.2°C-3.4°C to -10.6°CAbout 2.5 hours (11:00 to 13:30)
January-11.2°C-5.2°C to -19.1°CAbout 4 hours (10:30 to 14:30)
February-9.6°C-5.5°C to -14.6°CAbout 8 hours (08:30 to 16:30)
March-4.1°C0.2°C to -8.3°CAbout 12 hours (06:30 to 18:30)
  • November: the snow is not reliable yet. Visit Rovaniemi says permanent snow cover is usually in place by December. Lapland Safaris starts its winter programme on 1 December, because before then there is usually not enough snow for husky, reindeer or snowmobile trips.
  • December: Santa season. Santa Claus Office opens 08:00 to 20:00 every day from 30 November 2026 to 3 January 2027, and the weather institute says Lapland gets a white Christmas practically every year.
  • January: the coldest month. The institute says the coldest day of winter usually falls at the end of January, and in January 2026 Rovaniemi averaged -19.1°C across the whole month.
  • February and March: long days and the deepest snow, which usually peaks in Lapland around early April, says the institute. Visit Rovaniemi says the Northern Lights season runs from late August to early April, so the nights are still dark enough to look for them.

Go in December for Santa. Go in late February or March for deep snow and days long enough for a full safari. If husky and snowmobile rides are the point of the trip, avoid November.

Package prices start at £599 a head for a day trip

Packages bundle the parts that are hard to arrange from home. Santa's Lapland, for example, says its breaks include flights, transfers, half-board stays, thermal suits and boots, a husky ride, a reindeer sleigh ride and a private meeting with Santa. These are the 'from' prices Hays Travel and Santa's Lapland listed on 3 October 2026, so your own dates may cost more.

Check the protection before you pay. The ATOL scheme, run by the UK Civil Aviation Authority, gives financial protection on package trips that include a flight. It is not travel insurance. Check that the seller holds an ATOL, and you should get an ATOL Certificate when you book.

Building the trip yourself? The Santa visit costs nothing. Entry to Santa Claus Office is free all year, and you pay only if you buy photos, video or extras. Activities are where the money goes. Lapland Safaris' Santa Claus Safari is a family day of five and a half hours with a reindeer ride, an Arctic Circle crossing, lunch and a meeting with Santa. It starts from €219 on Visit Rovaniemi's booking page and runs from 1 December to 6 January.

Children's prices soften the bill. Lapland Safaris' visitor FAQ gives children aged 4 to 14 a 25% discount from 1 December to 7 January and 50% at other times, and children under 4 go free. Thermal overalls, boots, woollen socks, gloves, scarves and hats come with all its safaris unless stated otherwise.

A Lapland day trip flies out early and gets home late at night

Day-trip charters fly their own schedules. For scale, on Ryanair's timetable the shortest scheduled return is 6 hours 35 minutes in the air, from Manchester, and the longest is 6 hours 55 minutes, from Bristol. Hays Travel says its December day trips fly out early in the morning and come back late at night.

Add the two-hour time difference and December's 2.5 hours of daylight, and much of the day in Lapland happens in the twilight of the polar night. Visit Rovaniemi points out that this twilight is not full darkness: around midday the snow glows blue. A day trip suits a family that wants the Santa meeting without a night away. The Winter Wonderland Day Trip that Hays Travel sells, for example, lists a private meeting with Santa and taster rides by husky sled, reindeer sleigh and snowmobile. Two or three nights leave time for longer safaris and more than one evening to look for the Northern Lights.

UK passports need two date checks before a Lapland trip

As of 2 October 2026, the FCDO's entry rules for Finland say a British citizen passport must pass two date checks. It must have been issued less than 10 years before the day you arrive. Its expiry date must also be at least 3 months after the day you plan to leave the Schengen area. On that passport you can visit the Schengen area, which includes Finland, without a visa for up to 90 days in any 180-day period.

Package sellers can ask for more. Santa's Lapland's travel information, for example, asks for at least six months left on your passport when you return from the EU, so meet whichever rule is stricter. Check every child's passport too, and leave time to replace one that fails. Our guide to UK passport renewal costs and timings sets out the steps.

Finland is in the Schengen area, which is bringing in the EU's Entry/Exit System (EES). On your first visit you may be asked to register fingerprints and a photo at a booth before passport control, at no cost. Children aged 11 or younger are not fingerprinted but may be photographed. At Finnish border control you may also be asked for your accommodation booking, a return ticket and proof that you have enough money for your stay. The FCDO also advises allowing extra time on the way home, because EES checks can take place before boarding.

The EU also plans a travel authorisation called ETIAS for visitors on a UK passport, but it is not running yet. GOV.UK's guidance on the EU Entry/Exit System says ETIAS is expected to start from autumn 2026 and that you need to do nothing for now. The EU will announce the start date before launch.

A child travelling with an adult who is not their parent or legal guardian must carry a letter of consent from a parent or guardian. These rules can change, so read the FCDO page again in the week before you fly.

Santa Claus Village is a short ride from Rovaniemi Airport

Santa Claus Village sits on the Arctic Circle, about 4 km by taxi from Rovaniemi Airport and about 8 km from the town centre, according to its own visitor FAQ. Local bus 8 runs between the centre and the village all year. From November to March, the private Santa's Express and Airport Express buses also link the airport, the village and the town. For local buses, Visit Rovaniemi suggests the Waltti Mobile app, which shows buses in real time and sells cheaper tickets.

You cannot book a time for the standard visit to Santa Claus Office. Everyone queues, and from late November to early January the office advises arriving earlier in the day to be sure of getting in. Your own camera stays in your pocket during the meeting. A Photographer Elf takes the pictures, which you can buy afterwards as a digital package or a printed A4 photo, and the files stay online for 400 days. The Christmas Express Pass, booked through the office's website, gives a set time instead of the queue.

Leave the drone at home as well. The village is less than 5 km from the airport, so flying one there needs permission from the Finnish air control authorities.

Bring a card. Visit Rovaniemi's visitor FAQ says the town has no currency exchange offices, and the nearest place in Finland to change foreign cash is Tampere, about 6 to 7 hours away by train. Most places take cards, and some are cashless and accept only card or mobile payments such as Apple Pay. There are cash machines at the airport, in the centre and at Santa Claus Village.

Lapland's cold drains phone batteries, so keep yours warm

Apple designs the iPhone for air temperatures between 0°C and 35°C. In each of the last ten winters, Rovaniemi's December, January and February averages all sat below 0°C. In very cold conditions, Apple says, battery life can drop for a while and the phone may switch itself off, and a phone that is too cold may not charge. Battery life returns to normal once the phone warms up.

Apple also says to store an iPhone between -20°C and 45°C. Rovaniemi's coldest January in the table came within a degree of that limit, so never leave a phone in a car or an outside bag overnight. On an Android phone, check the maker's own guidance.

  • Carry your phone in an inside pocket, close to your body, and bring it out for photos rather than keeping it in an outer pocket.
  • Let a cold phone warm up indoors before you plug it in.
  • Keep a power bank in a warm pocket too, not in a bag on a sledge.
  • Save safari vouchers, transfer details and boarding passes to your phone's wallet or as screenshots, so a flat battery or a weak signal in the forest does not leave you stuck.

Roaming charges in Finland depend on your UK network

Each UK network sets its own terms for Finland. This is how their own pages read on 2 October 2026.

  • O2: Finland is in O2's EU roaming zone, where your UK allowances work at no extra cost up to a 25GB roaming limit. O2 says it is the only major network to include EU roaming in its tariffs.
  • Three: Finland is in Go Roam in Europe, where you can use up to 12GB of your data. If roaming is not built into your plan, you need a Go Roam pass or a daily charge. For most customers who joined or upgraded between 1 October 2021 and 17 December 2025, Three lists that charge as £2 a day. It is £2.75 a day if you joined or upgraded on or after 18 December 2025, and Three's page lists some plan exceptions.
  • Vodafone and EE: Vodafone says its charges depend on your plan. Check your own plan's roaming terms with either network before you go.

If you are on O2 and your allowance covers the trip, you may not need anything else. If roaming costs more than you want to pay, a travel eSIM on a Finnish network is the other route. HelloRoam's Finland plans run on DNA, a Finnish mobile network. For a remote cabin, look up the address on DNA's coverage map, which is in Finnish, before you book.

Install the eSIM at home on Wi-Fi and switch it on when you land. First check your phone supports eSIM, then follow the steps to set up the eSIM before you fly.

Data earns its keep after dark too. The Finnish Meteorological Institute's live aurora readings turn red when the Northern Lights are very likely, which only helps if the page loads outside. To size a plan, estimate how much data your trip needs from the number of nights and what you use your phone for.

Some trips cross a border. There are no direct trains from Finland to Sweden or Norway, Visit Rovaniemi says, but public transport reaches the Tornio and Haparanda crossing, and long-distance buses run from Rovaniemi to Tromsø in Norway. HelloRoam's regional plan for Europe covers Finland, Sweden and Norway, so one eSIM keeps working on both sides of the border.

Questions travellers ask

Is 7 too old for a Lapland trip?

No. Santa Claus Office says people of all ages share a moment with Santa there, and you can meet him every day of the year. On Lapland Safaris snowmobile trips, children ride in a sledge pulled by the guide's snowmobile. Children over 140 cm tall can sit on the back as passengers when they pay the adult price.

Can teenagers drive a snowmobile in Lapland?

Not on Lapland Safaris trips. The company says Finnish law requires a driving licence in class T, A1, A or B, which generally means drivers over 18 with a car or motorcycle licence. Teenagers aged 15 to 17 count as adults on its safaris, but they cannot drive. Drivers should bring their licence, because police may check it during the safari.

What happens to safaris on very cold days?

Most still run. Lapland Safaris says that below -20°C, children aged 2 to 14 travel by car during snowmobile trips where possible, and children under 2 cannot take part. Below -30°C, children cannot join reindeer or husky sled rides, though short rides may still be possible. Below -40°C, the company tries to move booked trips to another day.
