Gambia is the smallest country in mainland Africa, a narrow strip of land along the Gambia River surrounded by Senegal. Despite its small size, coverage varies significantly between the busy coastal resort zone and the rural interior.
Three operators provide coverage: Africell Gambia, QCell Gambia, and Comium Gambia. Africell has the widest overall coverage and is the primary network for HelloRoam travellers. 4G LTE is available in Banjul (the capital), the Atlantic Coast resort strip (Kololi, Senegambia, Kotu, Brufut, and Bijilo), and Serrekunda (the largest city by population).
The Atlantic Coast resort strip is the main tourist corridor, and coverage is solid throughout the hotel zone, beaches, and entertainment areas. Banjul island itself and the Albert Market area have 4G. Banjul International Airport has coverage in the terminal.
Further inland along the Gambia River, coverage drops to 3G or weaker in smaller villages. The river lodges and nature camps in the interior that attract birding and wildlife tourists often have limited signal. Abuko Nature Reserve near the coast is covered. Kiang West National Park and river camps further inland are progressively less connected. Australian travellers should confirm their handset is unlocked and supports the local network bands.
