The embassy notes that Albania's border officers have lately been recording arrivals electronically instead of stamping passports, so it suggests saving your boarding pass or ticket as proof of your entry date. Install a HelloRoam Albania eSIM before you fly, and your return booking and hotel confirmation load on your phone before you reach the passport desk.
We checked every rule in this guide on October 1, 2026, on the US Embassy in Tirana's website and Albania's official e-Visa portal. We also compared them with the visa pages of Albania's Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs. Albania sets these rules and can change them quickly, so check those pages again before you book.
Albania's entry rules at a glance
| Question | Official answer |
|---|---|
| Do US citizens need a visa? | No. The US Embassy in Tirana and Albania's foreign ministry both list US passports as visa-free. |
| How long can a US citizen stay? | Up to one year without a residence permit. |
| How do I restart the one-year limit? | Leave Albania and stay out for at least 90 days. |
| How long must my passport be valid? | Visa-free travelers: at least 3 months beyond the day you leave Albania, and issued within the last 10 years. Visa holders: at least 3 months beyond the visa's end date, with 2 blank pages. |
| Can I work or study on a visa-free stay? | No. A job or a place at a school or university means applying for a residence permit. |
| Who needs an e-Visa? | Passports the foreign ministry's table marks "with visa", unless the traveler holds a qualifying US, UK, EU or Schengen visa or residence permit. |
| How long does an e-Visa take? | About 15 working days after payment, and up to 30 in exceptional cases. |
| Is Albania in the Schengen area? | No, so days in Albania don't count toward the Schengen 90-day limit. |
A US passport covers up to a year in Albania
The US Embassy in Tirana's entry guidance says US citizens generally don't need to register with Albania's border and migration police for stays under one year. The year runs from your entry. Short trips out of Albania during that year don't extend it or reset it.
To start a fresh one-year stay without a permit, you must leave Albania and stay out for at least 90 days. Staying past the year without a permit can bring a fine, removal or a five-year entry ban, and the embassy says it can't intervene in immigration cases. It has also had reports of dual US-Albanian families fined after overstays on their US passports.
A job offer or a place at a school or university changes the picture. Either one means applying in person for a residence permit at the regional border and migration police office where you live, even if you'll stay less than a year.

Bring proof of your plans to the border
Visa-free doesn't mean paperwork-free. The embassy and the e-Visa portal both list documents Albanian border officers may ask any visitor to show:
- a return ticket or a return travel reservation;
- confirmation of where you're staying for the whole trip;
- proof you can pay for the stay, such as a bank statement, with the portal giving 5,000 lek (ALL) a day for adults and 2,500 lek a day for minors as a guide amount;
- an invitation from your host, if someone in Albania is hosting you;
- an international vaccination certificate, only if you arrive from a country affected by an epidemic or disease that Albanian law covers.
Officers might not ask for any of them. Having them ready, on your phone and on paper, still saves a slow conversation at the desk.
Albania counts passport validity from the day you leave
The two governments word the passport rule differently. The US Embassy asks for at least three months of remaining validity and recommends six months from your planned departure. Albania's foreign ministry is stricter on paper: a visa-free traveler's passport must stay valid for at least three months after the date you leave Albania, and it must have been issued within the last 10 years.
Follow the embassy's six-month advice and you meet both versions. If you plan to use most of the one-year allowance, count from your last day in Albania: a full year's stay needs a passport that is still valid about 15 months after you arrive.
A US, UK, EU or Schengen visa or residence permit can replace the Albanian visa
Albania waives its visa for foreign nationals who hold a valid multiple-entry visa or a valid residence permit issued by the United States, the United Kingdom or an EU country, including electronic versions. A visa must already have been used to enter the country that issued it. The same exemption covers a used multiple-entry Schengen visa, a Schengen residence permit, and anyone whose passport gets them into the Schengen area without a visa. The e-Visa portal says the exemption doesn't apply to Iranian nationals. The portal lists two narrower exemptions too: a 10-year UAE residence permit with at least a year left on it, and Saudi and Qatari passports for tourism from April 15 to December 31, 2026.
This is the rule US residents traveling on another passport should check first. On its own, an Indian, Filipino or Nigerian passport needs a Type C e-Visa, according to the foreign ministry's visa table by nationality. A qualifying US visa or residence document can remove that step. Albania's pages speak of a "residence permit" and don't name US documents such as the green card, so if your status isn't clear-cut, ask the Embassy of Albania in Washington before you book.
Watch the expiry date, too. Albania's foreign ministry and the e-Visa portal both say you must leave Albania no later than three days before the visa or permit you entered on expires. Plan to leave at least three days before that date.
Everyone else applies for a Type C e-Visa online
Albania's short-stay visa is the Type C. It allows up to 90 days in any 180-day period, counted from your first entry, and can be issued for one, two or multiple entries. Visa-required travelers staying over 90 days need a Type D visa, the route to a residence permit. A Type A visa covers airport transit.
Apply online only on e-visa.al, the official e-Visa portal, the address Albania's foreign ministry links to from its visa page. You must be outside Albania when you apply and when you pay. The portal refuses applications filed more than 90 days before your travel date, and it says the check takes about 15 working days after payment, or up to 30 in exceptional cases. That makes the window roughly 90 days to six weeks before you fly.
- Look up your passport in the foreign ministry's visa table. If it says "without visa", you don't need an e-Visa.
- Create an account on e-visa.al, pick the visa type and purpose, and fill in the form for the passport you'll travel on. Dual citizens must choose that passport's nationality, or the e-Visa is invalid.
- Upload your documents as PDF scans, in Albanian or English, plus a 47 mm x 36 mm photo on a white background.
- A consul checks the file first. If something is missing, the portal asks for it, and the application can be refused if you don't fix it within 15 days.
- Once the file is accepted, an email asks for the fee. When we checked, the portal's pay-online option was marked temporarily not working, so the fee goes by bank wire. Within 15 days, upload a printed bank receipt signed by a bank employee and stamped by the bank. Screenshots of online transfers aren't accepted.
- Wait for the decision by email. If it's approved, download the e-Visa and carry it when you enter and when you leave Albania.
- If it's refused, you have 5 working days to appeal by email to the foreign ministry's Directorate for Consular Affairs. The fee isn't refunded.
An approved e-Visa still doesn't guarantee entry, the portal warns, so carry the same supporting papers you uploaded.
Albania's e-Visa fee depends on your passport
Albania sets visa fees by nationality, under Council of Ministers Decision No. 329 of May 29, 2024. This sample from the fee list on the e-Visa portal shows Type C prices:
| Passport | Single entry | Double entry | Multiple entry |
|---|---|---|---|
| India | €15 | €15 | €15 |
| Pakistan | €20 | €35 | €35 |
| Philippines | €30 | €30 | €30 |
| Haiti | €30 | €30 | €30 |
| Egypt | €35 | €35 | €35 |
| Vietnam | €40 | €40 | €40 |
| Jamaica | €40 | €40 | €40 |
| Nigeria | €25 | €40 | €80 |
| Bangladesh | €25 | €40 | €80 |
Children under 6 pay no fee, and children aged 6 to 12 pay half, according to the portal. A passport missing from the list pays a reciprocal fee, or €35 where none applies. The fee is charged in euros.
Albania sits outside the Schengen area
Albania isn't a Schengen country. The European Commission's Schengen page lists 29 members: 25 EU countries plus Iceland, Norway, Switzerland and Liechtenstein, and Albania isn't an EU member. Schengen's limit of 90 days in any 180-day period counts time inside those countries only, so nights in Albania don't use up your Schengen days.
That matters on a longer Balkan or Mediterranean trip. Greece and Italy are in Schengen, so days there count. Montenegro and North Macedonia sit outside it and set their own entry rules.
Staying connected in Albania and beyond its borders

HelloRoam's Albania plans list One Albania among their networks, and each plan shows its networks before you pay. Install the eSIM over Wi-Fi at home and switch it on when you land. Our eSIM installation guide covers each step, and it's worth a minute to check that your phone supports eSIM first.
One honest limit: HelloRoam's Europe regional plan covers Greece and Italy but not Albania. If your trip continues into Greece, add one of our mobile data plans for Greece for that part of the journey.
Questions travelers ask
Can I get an Albania visa on arrival?
No. Albania's e-Visa portal only takes applications from people outside Albania, either online or through an Albanian embassy or consulate. If your passport needs a visa, you must have the approved e-Visa before you reach the border, and you show it again when you leave.
Can I check my Albania visa status by passport number?
Not by passport number alone. e-visa.al tracks applications by the tracking number in your confirmation email, which you enter on its Track application page. Once a visa is issued, the portal's Verify visa page checks it with the visa's serial number plus your passport number.
