8 terms that come up when you price travel data

Data-only plan (data without a number): Mobile data with no phone number attached. Your SA SIM keeps your number for calls and SMSes.
Prepaid plan (paid up front): Paid up front, and it ends once its days or data are used up.
Regional plan (one plan across borders): Covers a list of countries with one plan; no new eSIM at each border.
Price per GB (what 1 GB costs): A plan's price divided by its gigabytes. It's a fair test only between plans you would use up.
Validity (a plan's lifespan in days): The number of days a plan runs. They start when your phone first connects to a network at your destination, not when you buy. When the days run out, the plan ends, even with data left.
Top-up (more data, added in our app): Extra data you add in our app to your current eSIM before it expires. If a plan can't take more, buy the next plan.
Roaming bundle (roaming data from your network): Data, and sometimes minutes, that your home network sells for use abroad. Vodacom bills its bundle only once you are roaming outside South Africa.⁽¹⁾
Day-priced unlimited plan (a price for each day): You pay for a set number of days, not for gigabytes. Fair-use terms apply.

SA network roaming bills as you use it, while a prepaid eSIM bills once

On roaming, your South African network bills what you use abroad, by the bundle or by the megabyte.⁽¹⁾⁽⁴⁾ With a prepaid eSIM you pay once, at purchase, and the charges stop there.

Vodacom sells roaming data and minutes as All For You bundles. You opt in with *135# or the VodaPay app, and billing starts only once you're roaming outside South Africa.⁽¹⁾ If a bundle runs out while you're still using data, Vodacom adds another of the same size.⁽¹⁾

MTN and Telkom both want roaming switched on 7 days before you travel.^(2)(12) Cell C tells customers to check a destination's rates before they activate roaming.⁽³⁾

To keep data off your home SIM on iPhone, choose the travel eSIM under Mobile Data and leave Allow Mobile Data Switching off.⁽⁵⁾ Calls and SMSes on your home number still bill at roaming rates, and Cell C's prepaid rate table charges for calls you receive too.⁽⁴⁾

A local SIM, an airport kiosk, pocket Wi-Fi or free Wi-Fi might suit your trip better. Compare what each costs for your days and data, and what each asks of you. New to eSIMs? Start with how a travel eSIM works.

A local network's own plan

A local plan comes from a network in the country you visit, as a SIM card or, with many networks, an eSIM.⁽⁶⁾ A SIM card is one you collect, carry and swap in yourself, or wait for by post.⁽⁶⁾ The network may ask to see ID, such as your passport.⁽⁶⁾ On a long stay in one country, compare its cost for your data and days with a travel eSIM's, then read how an eSIM and a SIM card differ.
Airport SIM kiosk

You can buy a plan in person at an airport kiosk once you land.⁽⁶⁾ It's a plan from a local network in that country. Compare its price for your data and days with a plan you buy before you fly and set up at home.
Pocket Wi-Fi rental

A pocket Wi-Fi is a small rented router that shares one data plan over Wi-Fi with several phones. You carry it, charge it and hand it back afterwards, so it suits a group that stays together.
Free Wi-Fi only

Free Wi-Fi at your hotel or a cafe adds nothing to your bill, and Cell C advises using it where you can.⁽³⁾ Away from Wi-Fi, walking and public transport directions in Google Maps need data, so keep a small plan for the street.⁽⁸⁾

Every price is shown before you pay, and no plan renews by itself

You see the total price of each of our plans before you pay. A plan ends when its days or data are finished and never renews, so no charge follows you home. We run no free trial and give away no free data.

If another provider offers a free eSIM or free data, check how much data it includes and what you pay once the offer ends.

Start small and add data in the app as you go. A plan that takes no top-ups means buying a fresh one.

Sign in before you buy, and every order earns credit back on what you pay, to spend on a later plan. You start at 5% and move up to 10% as your total spend grows. The credit is ready 14 days after the order, and unused credit expires after 12 months without account activity.

Plans changed? Any eSIM you haven't used yet can be refunded within 180 days of purchase, even if it's installed. The refund policy sets out the full terms.

Four habits help a small data plan last the whole trip

Spending less on travel data starts with buying only what you need. After that, cut what apps use in the background.

Save offline maps over Wi-Fi before you head out

Google Maps lets you download an area to use offline, although not in every country or region.⁽⁸⁾ Save each city over Wi-Fi first. Walking and public transport directions do not work offline, so keep some data for those.⁽⁸⁾
Turn on Low Data Mode or Data Saver for the trip

Switch on Low Data Mode for the line you use abroad.⁽⁹⁾ On iPhone it sits under Settings > Mobile Data. On Android, Data Saver lets most apps get background data only over Wi-Fi.⁽¹⁰⁾
Keep video and backups for Wi-Fi

Our data usage calculator puts an hour of HD video at about 1,4 GB, against about 10 MB for an hour of maps. Leave streaming, photo backups and big uploads for the Wi-Fi where you're staying.
Leave app updates for Wi-Fi

On Android, set Google Play to update apps over Wi-Fi only.⁽¹¹⁾ iPhone users get the same effect from Low Data Mode, which stops automatic App Store updates and downloads.⁽⁹⁾

First, check that your phone supports eSIM and is unlocked. Our eSIM phone guide covers both for iPhone and Android. On iPhone, Settings > General > About shows No SIM Restrictions next to Network Provider Lock when the phone is unlocked.⁽⁶⁾ Then install the eSIM before you fly, so it's ready when you land.
