Airalo vs HelloRoam eSIM (2026) pricing, coverage & features compared

Airalo is worth it if you want a fixed data package from a large country catalogue, and it also sells unlimited plans in select markets. For heavy data users or longer holidays, fixed packages can mean buying more than one. HelloRoam sells unlimited daily plans in most destinations, which can be simpler for 2-week holidays from South Africa to the UK, Mauritius or Dubai.

Most Airalo plans are fixed data packages priced by the gigabyte, and prices vary by destination and package size. For longer holidays from South Africa to the UK or Dubai with heavy data use, compare HelloRoam's unlimited daily plans with the cost of several Airalo fixed packages. Either option usually costs far less than Vodacom or MTN roaming.

Airalo introduced unlimited data plans with fair usage throttling in select markets. Most Airalo plans are fixed data packages. Once you use your data allowance, you need to buy another package. HelloRoam offers both fixed data and unlimited daily plans, so travellers from South Africa on longer holidays to the UK, UAE or Mauritius can pick HelloRoam's unlimited option instead.

Airalo eSIM plans include both single-country and regional packages that work across multiple countries. Regional plans cover areas like Europe, Southeast Asia, and the Americas. HelloRoam also offers regional plans that cover several countries with one purchase. If you're combining the UK, France, and Italy in one holiday from South Africa, a regional plan that lists all three saves you from buying separate plans per stop.

Airalo uses local partner carrier networks in each country. HelloRoam plans run on 212+ local partner networks across 185+ countries, with 4G or 5G in most destinations, and each destination page shows its network type. For popular routes from South Africa to the UK, UAE, and Mauritius, both providers connect to major local carriers in each market.

Airalo eSIMs, like every consumer eSIM, follow the GSMA eSIM standard, which encrypts profile data during installation. Your eSIM profile stays hardware-bound to your handset, making it more secure than a removable physical SIM. HelloRoam follows the same GSMA standard across all 185+ destinations. An eSIM is not transferable between devices once installed.

An Airalo eSIM installs over the air when you scan a QR code, with no delivery wait. After buying your plan, Airalo sends you a QR code by email. On iPhone, go to Settings, then Mobile Service, then Add eSIM, and scan the QR code. On Android, go to Settings, then Network, then Add eSIM, and scan the code. HelloRoam uses the same simple QR code activation process across all 185+ covered countries.

Airalo sets its own refund terms, so check Airalo's refund page for the current conditions. HelloRoam refunds eSIMs you have not activated, within 180 days. Check the full terms on each provider's website before buying, especially if your holiday plans might change after purchase.

Airalo works on most modern eSIM-compatible smartphones. Airalo compatible devices include iPhones from the XS (2018) onward and Android handsets from Samsung, Google, and OnePlus. Not all phones support eSIM. eSIM activation on both Airalo and HelloRoam uses the same QR code process: scan the code, confirm the install, and your plan activates when you land. HelloRoam works on the same range of eSIM compatible phones. Check the device compatibility page on either provider's website before purchasing your plan.

Airalo eSIM plan prices vary by country and data size. Packages for popular destinations like the UK and UAE start at competitive rates. HelloRoam plans are competitively priced with no subscription required, and unlimited daily plans are available for travellers from South Africa who need more than a fixed package for a 2-week holiday to Mauritius or Zanzibar.

Airalo has a dedicated app for iOS and Android where you can browse plans, buy eSIMs, and manage active profiles. HelloRoam also has a full iOS and Android app, available in many languages, including English. Both apps let you handle everything from purchase to activation without a browser or store visit.

Airalo sets its own refund terms, so check Airalo's refund page to see which plans qualify. HelloRoam refunds unactivated eSIMs within 180 days. An eSIM is not transferable between devices once installed, so confirm your handset is compatible before buying from either provider.

HelloRoam covers 185+ countries and Airalo covers 200-plus. Airalo has a broader catalogue overall. For travellers from South Africa visiting the UK, UAE, Mauritius, and Australia, both providers have strong coverage. For very remote destinations, check each provider's full country list before you travel.

Prices depend on the destination, the data size and the number of days, so the cheaper provider can change from trip to trip. For a 2-week trip to the UK or Dubai with heavy data use, one HelloRoam unlimited daily plan can replace buying 2 to 3 Airalo packages. Both providers usually cost far less than Vodacom, MTN, or Cell C roaming. Compare both at checkout for your destination and trip length.

An eSIM is better than a physical SIM for travel because it installs over the air by QR code with no card swap or delivery wait, costs far less than carrier roaming, and lets you keep your South African number for calls and texts. Vodacom, MTN, and Cell C all charge steep per-megabyte or per-day roaming rates the moment you land. An eSIM from HelloRoam or Airalo costs a fraction of those rates. eSIM works on iPhone XS and newer, most Samsung Galaxy S20 and newer models, Google Pixel 4 and newer, and many recent Android flagships, so check your phone's settings first. HelloRoam covers 185+ countries with no monthly subscription, and an eSIM is not transferable between devices once installed.

There is no giveaway iPhone eSIM from HelloRoam. What you get is a flat prepaid rate on eSIM plans for iPhones, including the iPhone XS (2018) and all later models. Scan the QR code and install the eSIM profile over the air, and your plan starts when it first connects at your destination. Plans do not renew on their own, and an eSIM you buy but never activate is refundable within 180 days. An eSIM is not transferable between devices once installed.

Airalo's main drawback is its plan structure: it sells fixed data packages per destination, with unlimited data only in select markets. On a longer or data-heavy trip, you may end up buying several packages instead of one. For refunds, check Airalo's own refund page for its current terms. Check the pricing table above before you buy, and confirm your phone is eSIM-capable and carrier-unlocked first.
