If your phone takes an eSIM, you can install a HelloRoam eSIM for Turkey at home, use it for maps, transfers and messages once you arrive, and keep your UK SIM in the phone for calls and texts.
Your plan, your phone lock and eSIM support decide how your phone works in Turkey
Check all three before you leave the UK, while your network's shops and helplines are easy to reach.
| Check | How to check | Where to look |
|---|---|---|
| Does your plan cover Turkey? | Find Turkey in your network's roaming checker and note the pass or daily charge for your plan | Your network's website or app |
| Is your phone unlocked? You need this for a Turkish SIM or a travel eSIM | iPhone: Settings, General, About. "No SIM Restrictions" next to Network Provider Lock means it's unlocked. Android: ask your network | Apple Support, or the network that sold you the phone |
| Does your phone take an eSIM? You need this for a travel eSIM | iPhone XS, XS Max, XR or later. Android support depends on the model | Apple's travel eSIM page, or the maker's spec page for your model |
For a Samsung, Pixel or other Android phone, our list of phones that support eSIM shows which models can take one.
Turkcell, Türk Telekom and Vodafone run 4.5G networks, as Turkey calls its 4G, and they shared out new 5G frequencies in the 700 MHz and 3.5 GHz bands at BTK's 5G auction in October 2025. Turkey's transport ministry said on 1 April 2026 that 5G was being switched on in stages across all 81 provinces.
Before you go, EE asks customers to set their phone to automatic network selection and to make sure data roaming is on in the phone's settings.
Turkey is outside the Europe roaming zones of EE, O2, Vodafone and Three

None of the four puts Turkey in its Europe zone, so your UK allowance only works there with a pass, a daily charge or a plan that includes Turkey. We read each network's own roaming pages for a Pay Monthly customer on 29 October 2026.
| Network | Where Turkey sits | Plans that include Turkey | Cost if yours doesn't |
|---|---|---|---|
| EE | Zone 1, listed with northern Cyprus | The Roaming Inclusive Extra for Rest of World Zone 1; log in to check yours | 24-hour pass £6, 7-day pass £30 |
| O2 | Outside the Europe Zone, one of the 75 O2 Travel destinations | Ultimate plans | O2 Travel Bolt On, £7 a day on days you use it |
| Vodafone | Global Roam, one of 84 destinations | Plans with 84 inclusive destinations, up to 25GB | £8 a day (plans bought on or after 11 August 2021) or £6 a day (earlier plans) |
| Three | Go Roam Around the World Extra | Complete plans, and Value plans joined before 22 June 2025 | £7 a day on plans joined or upgraded from 1 October 2021, or £8 on most plans joined or upgraded from 18 December 2025; 7-day pass £42 |
If your EE plan doesn't include Turkey, EE's checker says you get no mobile data there without a pass, and EE texts you a link to buy one when you land. On EE's standard roaming rates, a call in Turkey costs £2.46 a minute whether you make it or answer it, and a text costs 98p. A pass lets you use your UK calls, texts and data allowances. EE also tells customers to turn off Wi-Fi Calling before they go, to avoid extra charges. On an O2 plan without Turkey, your data stays off there too until you add O2 Travel or a data roaming bolt on.
On O2, a 24-hour day begins the first time you call, text or use data, and receiving calls or texts doesn't start it. Data on O2 Travel is capped at 2Mbps. Three lets you use up to 12GB of your UK data in Turkey, and you can buy Go Roam passes before you go.
Choosing a new plan with Turkey in mind? EE plans with the Roaming Inclusive Extra for Rest of World Zone 1, O2's Ultimate plans, Vodafone plans with 84 inclusive destinations and Three's Complete plans already include it. If yours doesn't, see what each network charges for roaming in Turkey. For the wider cost picture, read our guide comparing a travel eSIM with roaming.
A phone locked to EE, O2, Vodafone or Three can roam but can't take a Turkish SIM
Roaming runs through your own network, so a locked phone roams in Turkey as normal. The lock only stops you using another provider's SIM or eSIM, and that includes a Turkish SIM card or a travel eSIM. Apple's travel eSIM guide says an iPhone can't be locked to a network provider if you want to use another provider abroad.
Ofcom rules have stopped UK mobile companies from selling locked phones since 17 December 2021. If your phone came from a network before that date, it may still be locked. Check it at home and ask that network to unlock it before you go.
Check the model too. Apple says the iPhone Air and iPhone Duo are activated with an eSIM and don't support a physical SIM, so a Turkish SIM card won't fit either phone. They can still roam, or use a travel eSIM.
Turkey's 120-day IMEI rule applies when you put a Turkish SIM in your phone
Turkey records mobile phones by their IMEI number, and the registration service belongs to BTK. According to Turkey's e-Devlet government portal, a phone from abroad can run unregistered for at most 120 days, counted from its first use. Registering it keeps it working after that, and you can register within 365 days of the date you entered Turkey.
This matters if you buy a Turkish SIM for a UK phone. A one- or two-week holiday ends long before day 120. On a longer stay with a Turkish SIM, check the IMEI registration steps on e-Devlet well before that point.
Dual SIM keeps your UK number reachable while Turkish data runs on an eSIM

As the seller of HelloRoam travel eSIMs, we have a stake in this choice, and our conflict of interest policy explains how we handle it. If your UK plan already includes Turkey, you don't need a travel eSIM: your phone works there as it is.
A travel eSIM is the other way to get Turkish data. Apple's guide says an iPhone XS, XS Max, XR or later can use one, and an iPhone with a SIM tray can run a physical SIM and an eSIM together while you travel. Install it in the UK before you fly, because Apple's set-up steps need a Wi-Fi network or a hotspot. The FCDO's Turkey travel advice, last changed on 27 October 2026, also warns that some eSIM services are restricted in Turkey, so ask your eSIM provider before you go.
In Turkey, choose the eSIM as your data line (on iPhone: Settings, Mobile Data, Mobile Data) and switch data roaming on for it, as our step-by-step eSIM install guide shows. Apple adds that roaming fees can still build up on your home line while the travel eSIM carries data. On EE, a call you take on the UK line without a pass costs £2.46 a minute, so you may prefer WhatsApp or FaceTime calls over the eSIM's data.
HelloRoam's eSIM plans carry data only, with no calls, texts or emergency calls, so keep your UK SIM switched on as well. Turkey's emergency number is 112 for ambulance, fire and police, according to the FCDO.
If your trip carries on from Turkey to Qatar, Bahrain or Kuwait, HelloRoam's eSIM plan for the Middle East covers Turkey too, so the same eSIM keeps working across those borders.
Questions travellers ask
Do you still have to pay £10 to enter Turkey?
Not if you travel on a full British citizen passport. As of October 2026, the FCDO says British citizens can visit Turkey without a visa for up to 90 days in any 180-day period, for tourism or business, so there is no visa to pay for. Other British passports need a visa. Check the FCDO's Turkey page before you book.
