Your bundle works at no extra cost in Tesco's 48 Home From Home destinations, which are mostly in Europe. For trips beyond them, where Tesco says data can cost up to £5 per MB, HelloRoam's travel eSIM plans cover 185+ destinations.
Tesco pay as you go SIM at a glance
Tesco Mobile is an MVNO (mobile virtual network operator: it resells mobile access built on another carrier's masts, not infrastructure of its own) that launched in 2003 as a joint venture between Tesco and O2. Its pay as you go SIM is the no-contract product within that brand: top up, pick a 30-day bundle, and you're connected.
Getting one is quick. Buy a SIM in a Tesco store or order one online from Tesco Mobile, then top up at least £10 to activate it.
It comes as a physical SIM card.
That matters more than it used to. Some phones are eSIM-only: they have no SIM tray and download a digital SIM instead, as our guide to what an eSIM is explains. Tesco Mobile does supply eSIMs through its Phone Shops and customer care team, but its Essentials pages don't say whether pay as you go can run on one. If your phone is eSIM-only, ask in a Tesco Mobile Phone Shop before you buy.
The network underneath is O2. Tesco Mobile says its 4G reaches 99% of the UK population, with 5G in parts of most major towns and cities. Rural signal follows O2's masts, so check your postcode on Tesco Mobile's coverage checker before you commit.
Tesco Mobile also sells SIM only contracts, and the two products are easy to confuse. Those contracts run for 12 or 24 months and only roll monthly once the term ends. The PAYG SIM is separate: it has no minimum term, and it can't sit on an account already linked to a pay monthly contract, so you'd need a second account with a different email address.
How Tesco pay as you go bundles and top-up work

Tesco PAYG runs on 30-day bundles of data, minutes and texts, paid for from your top-up balance. They replaced the old Rocket Packs. By default, each bundle renews automatically when its 30 days end, as long as your balance covers the cost. Stopping the bundle in the Tesco Mobile app or by calling 4488 turns renewal off.
Tesco's pay as you go tariff page listed five bundles in September 2026:
| Bundle price | Data | Minutes and texts |
|---|---|---|
| £5 | 500MB | 500 minutes and 500 texts |
| £10 | 10GB | Unlimited |
| £15 | 25GB | Unlimited |
| £20 | 50GB | Unlimited |
| £30 | 100GB | Unlimited |
Tesco's top-up guide lists three ways to add credit: the Tesco Mobile app, a free call to 4488 from your Tesco phone, or a Tesco store, where you can pay by card, cash or voucher. You can add up to £30 at a time, and your balance can hold up to £100. Essentials has no automatic top-up, and if your balance is too low on renewal day, Tesco pauses the bundle until you top up.
Here's the painful bit.
If a bundle runs out before its 30 days are up, you can't bolt on extra allowance. Anything more you use comes off your balance at Tesco's out-of-bundle rates: 25p a minute, 10p a text and 10p per MB. That data rate works out at over £100 per GB, against £10 for a 10GB bundle, so on the £10 bundle, renewing early is the cheaper fix once you need more than 100MB. An early renewal gives you fresh allowances and a new 30-day period.
Unused allowances don't carry forward either. Buy a large bundle, use half of it, and when the 30 days end those remaining gigabytes are gone. Your top-up balance stays, but Tesco disconnects numbers that go unused for six months or more, and you may lose the number and any credit left. The one refund route: within 14 days of buying a bundle in the app or on Tesco Mobile's website, you can ask for a refund on allowances you haven't used.
MoneySavingExpert reported on 23 September 2025 that Tesco Mobile was moving all its PAYG customers onto Pay as you go Essentials and pushing them to buy its new bundles. Former Lite plan customers left on standard rates would pay 25p a minute for calls instead of 8p, and 10p a text instead of 4p, while data stayed at 10p per MB.
Clubcard points
There's no Clubcard discount on bundles. Instead, text CLUBCARD to 28578 to link your card, and you collect one Clubcard point for every £1 you top up in the app, in store or on 4488. In September 2026 Tesco was also tripling the £15 bundle's data to 75GB for linked Clubcard holders, for three months. For shoppers already collecting points on the weekly shop, it's a small but real perk.
How do you activate a Tesco pay as you go SIM card?

You activate a Tesco pay as you go SIM by making a standard call, sending a standard text or using data once the SIM is in your phone. Tesco's getting-started steps ask you to turn on 4G Calling first, and the first activation needs a £10 minimum top-up. If you ordered online, the SIM may arrive with your first bundle already added, and that bundle should start when the SIM does. No store visit is needed once you have the card.
The steps, in order:
- Order the SIM online and choose your first bundle, or buy one in a Tesco store
- If your SIM has no bundle yet, top up at least £10 and add one in the Tesco Mobile app, or with a voucher by calling 4488
- Turn on 4G Calling (VoLTE) in your phone's settings
- Put the SIM in your phone and make a standard call, send a text or use data
- Use the Tesco Mobile app to check your allowances and manage auto-renewal
Switch VoLTE on before your first call
VoLTE (Voice over LTE, which Tesco calls 4G Calling) carries your calls over the 4G network. Tesco says Essentials needs a 4G or 5G phone with 4G Calling switched on. Its 3G network is now off, and without 4G Calling you won't be able to use mobile data at all. On an iPhone, the voice settings sit under Settings > Mobile Data > Mobile Data Options > Voice & Data. Android menus vary by maker, and Tesco's device guides give the steps for each model.
The Tesco Mobile app
Download it free from the App Store or Google Play, or text APP to 28901. Tesco calls it the quickest way to manage Essentials: you can check allowances and usage, top up, change or stop your bundle and switch auto-renewal off. To sign up, you need an email address that isn't already linked to a Tesco Mobile account.
Switching your existing number
On your current SIM, text PAC to 65075 to get a porting authorisation code (PAC). If you joined online, text PORT to 23424 from your new Tesco SIM when it arrives, and Tesco texts you within 24 hours with your transfer date. Your phone loses service on that day, possibly until 6pm, so pick a day when you aren't expecting bank texts or two-factor codes. Tesco's switching guide says a transfer can sometimes take up to five days.
What happens when you take your Tesco PAYG SIM abroad?
In Europe, very little changes. Tesco's Home From Home lets Essentials customers use their UK data, minutes and texts at no extra cost in 48 destinations: every EU country plus places such as Norway, Switzerland, Iceland, Gibraltar, Jersey, Guernsey and the Isle of Man. Outside that list, pay as you go roaming rates apply, and data ranges from 1p to £5 per MB depending on the country.
So a week in Faro costs the same as a week in Edinburgh, as long as you stay inside your bundle.
The EU roaming reality
Roam Like at Home, the EU regulation that once gave UK travellers free EU data, was a Brexit casualty. Tesco Mobile still doesn't charge extra across its Home From Home destinations, but a fair usage policy applies: spend more time, or use more of your allowance, in those places than in the UK, and Tesco adds a surcharge after texting you. Turkey, Serbia and Montenegro sit outside the list, so check our UK guide to eSIMs for Europe if your trip crosses into them.
Outside Europe, the picture splits in two. Tesco charges pay as you go customers 1p per MB for data in the USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa, about £10 per GB, though calls home and incoming calls there cost 89p a minute. Under Tesco's pay as you go roaming rates, Turkey sits in Region 2 and Thailand, Japan, the UAE and Egypt in Region 4, where data costs £5 per MB. At that rate, 100MB of maps and messages costs £500.
Your options outside Home From Home
In a Region 2 or Region 4 country you have three ways round those rates. Tesco's own advice is to turn data roaming off before you leave and use free Wi-Fi. You can swap in a local SIM on arrival, though your UK number goes quiet while the Tesco card is out of the phone. Or you can add a travel eSIM for data and leave the Tesco SIM where it is.
Apple's Dual SIM guide says an iPhone XS or later can run a physical SIM and an eSIM together, and suggests adding a local data plan when you travel. Set the eSIM as your data line and keep data roaming off on the Tesco line, and Tesco's £5 per MB never applies. Incoming calls on the Tesco line are still charged outside Home From Home, at £1.49 a minute in Region 4. HelloRoam, for one, sells Turkey eSIM plans and Thailand eSIM plans.
Which pay as you go SIM is best for UK users?
Tesco Mobile PAYG suits light users well, particularly those who already collect Clubcard points and whose trips stay inside Home From Home. If you buy a bundle every month and use a lot of data, price up a one-month rolling SIM before you renew.
The decision hinges on three things: how much data you use, where you travel, and how much the Clubcard points are worth to you.
The Clubcard factor
The loyalty perk is modest: one Clubcard point per £1 topped up, not a discount. If you shop at Tesco regularly and your usage stays low, that's a fair reason to stay. It won't close the gap with cheaper rolling SIM deals if you use a lot of data.
For travel, the maths depends on the destination. Inside Home From Home, your Tesco bundle already works, so a week in Spain on Essentials doesn't need a separate eSIM. Beyond it, HelloRoam's travel eSIMs connect to 212+ networks worldwide, with 24/7 support if something goes wrong mid-trip.
| Feature | Tesco PAYG | Rolling monthly SIM | Travel eSIM |
|---|---|---|---|
| EU roaming | No extra cost in 48 Home From Home destinations | Varies by carrier | Bought for your destination |
| Data outside Europe | 1p to £5 per MB, by region | Varies by carrier | Comes from the plan you buy |
| eSIM support | Not stated for Essentials | Varies by carrier | Yes |
| Loyalty perk | 1 Clubcard point per £1 topped up | Varies by carrier | Varies by provider |
| Commitment | None; bundles renew every 30 days unless stopped | One month at a time | Varies by provider |
| Best suited to | Light UK use and trips in Europe | Heavier monthly data use | Trips outside Home From Home |
The right pick comes into focus quickly once you know your usage pattern. Low domestic use with Tesco loyalty: PAYG holds its ground. Regular home user wanting better data value: a rolling SIM. Trips beyond Home From Home: a travel eSIM for data, with your Tesco SIM kept in for your UK number.
Frequently asked questions about Tesco pay as you go SIM
Can I move my existing number away from Tesco Mobile PAYG?
Yes. Text PAC to 65075 from your Tesco Mobile phone, and the code arrives within a minute, as Ofcom's switching rules require. Give it to your new provider before 6pm Monday to Thursday and Tesco says the switch completes within one working day. Use up your bundle first, because Tesco says any bundle left is lost when you leave. For leftover credit, you can ask Tesco for a refund on Webchat when you switch with a PAC.
Can you buy a pay as you go SIM from Tesco?

Yes. You can buy a Tesco Mobile pay as you go SIM in Tesco stores or order one online. Tesco calls its pay as you go SIMs free and sends online orders by Royal Mail 1st Class post. Either way, you need to top up at least £10 to activate the SIM.
Ordering online takes a little longer because of the post, but the SIM may arrive with your first bundle already added. Activation then follows the steps covered earlier in this guide.
Are pay as you go SIM cards being phased out?
No. Tesco Mobile and O2 both still sell pay as you go SIMs.
What did go were Tesco's older pay as you go tariffs. Rocket Packs, Triple Credit and Lite were replaced by Pay as you go Essentials, and Tesco set out to move every pay as you go customer across by the end of 2025.
PAYG isn't disappearing. MoneySavingExpert's 2025 advice was that Tesco's standard rates still suit people who rarely use their phone or keep it for emergencies. Regular bundle buyers, it said, could save with a one-month rolling SIM, which easily beat Tesco's bundles.
