Best Time to Visit Athens
Athens has intense summer heat and mild winters. The best weather for sightseeing is April to June and September to October. April and May are warm, 18C to 26C, with fewer crowds at the Acropolis and the Ancient Agora than during the summer rush. October is excellent: sea temperatures stay warm enough for coastal day trips, and the city breathes after a long tourist season. July and August are Athens at its peak heat, regularly hitting 36C or above. Morning visits to sites open at 8am are manageable before noon. Afternoons call for shade and hydration. August sees many Athenians leave the city for islands, making the city quieter but some local businesses closed. Winter runs November through February with temperatures around 8C to 14C and occasional rain. It is quieter, cheaper, and pleasant for museum visits and walking the historic districts.
