El Salvador has three main mobile operators: Claro El Salvador, Tigo El Salvador, and Movistar El Salvador. Claro and Tigo together cover most of the country's populated areas with 4G LTE. HelloRoam travellers connect through these networks.
San Salvador, the capital, has strong 4G coverage throughout the downtown area, Zona Rosa, the Multiplaza shopping area, and surrounding municipalities. The Pacific coast surf towns of El Tunco, El Zonte, and El Cuco have usable 4G coverage in town centers. El Zonte, known as Bitcoin Beach, has particularly reliable coverage given its tech-forward reputation.
El Salvador is small, which means the main highway corridors between cities are mostly covered with 4G. The Pan-American highway route from San Salvador to Santa Ana, and south to La Libertad and the coast, has consistent signal. Ruta de las Flores (the flower route) through Apaneca, Juayúa, and Nahuizalco has 4G in most towns.
Volcano areas like Santa Ana Volcano (Ilamatepec) and the Santa Ana caldera trail have limited signal above the tree line. The Ruta del Café coffee-growing highlands and very rural border areas with Honduras and Guatemala have lighter coverage. Australian travellers should confirm their handset is unlocked and supports the local network bands.
