South Africa has two dominant mobile operators: Vodacom and MTN. Rain, Telkom Mobile, and Cell C round out the market. HelloRoam eSIMs connect via Vodacom and MTN, giving travelers access to the country's two widest networks.
Vodacom and MTN both launched 5G in South Africa, with live coverage in Johannesburg, Cape Town, Durban, Pretoria, and major urban centers. 4G LTE covers all main cities, the N1 and N2 highway corridors, and coastal towns. The Cape Peninsula, Garden Route, and Winelands all have strong 4G coverage.
Safari destinations present varying coverage. Kruger National Park has 4G near the main gates at Phalaborwa, Numbi, and Orpen, with weaker or no signal in the open game reserve. The private reserves around Sabi Sand, Timbavati, and Kapama have variable lodge Wi-Fi but limited mobile coverage in the open bush. The Drakensberg mountain range has 4G in resort towns like Winterton but weakens on high ridgeline trails. The Wild Coast in the Eastern Cape has 3G and patchy 4G between towns. Lesotho, which is surrounded by South Africa, requires a separate plan.
