What is an eSIM?
An eSIM is a digital SIM card soldered directly into your phone's motherboard. It connects you to cellular networks for calls, texts, and data. There is no card to insert, lose, or swap out at the airport.
The GSMA, which manages global eSIM standards, defines the specification that lets you store and switch carrier profiles wirelessly. Most modern smartphones, iPads, smartwatches, and even some laptops include an eSIM chip. It is perfect for travelers who want to hit the ground running with data as soon as they land.
How does an eSIM work?
Your phone uses built-in software to download and store a cellular carrier profile. Once active, you connect to mobile networks, make calls, send texts, and use data just like you would with a physical SIM. Most phones released after 2018 have this technology built in. Getting started takes about 5 minutes: buy a plan, open your confirmation email, and scan the QR code. Your physical SIM card stays in place the whole time. You can run both at once.

Why eSIM Makes Sense
eSIM Limitations to Know
eSIM technology makes international travel easier, cheaper, and more convenient. Here is what you gain by switching.
No bill shock when you land
Skip the hunt for a local SIM at the airport. With an eSIM, you connect to local carriers and get instant data at local speeds, with no extra charges from your home carrier.
Multiple profiles on one phone
Your phone can hold multiple eSIM profiles at once. Switch between carriers or numbers without pulling out a tiny card.
Pay for what you need
Heading to Paris for 10 days? Buy a 10-day plan instead of a monthly one. Pay only for what your trip actually needs.
Frees up device space
No physical SIM slot means manufacturers can use that space for a bigger battery or other hardware upgrades.
Cannot be lost or stolen
Lose your bag at LAX or get pickpocketed in Rome? Your eSIM stays safely inside your phone. It cannot be removed or stolen.
Less plastic waste
One less plastic card in landfill every trip. Switching to an eSIM is a simple step toward greener travel.

Not sure if your device supports eSIM?
Wondering if your iPhone or Android supports eSIM? Most phones released after 2019 do. Check before you book your trip.
Check CompatibilityeSIM vs Physical SIM Card: What Is the Difference?
An eSIM is a digital SIM card built inside your phone. A traditional SIM is a removable physical chip. Both connect you to cellular networks, but they work in very different ways.

FAQs
The 'e' in eSIM stands for embedded, meaning the chip is permanently soldered onto your phone's circuit board rather than slotted in as a removable card. Your carrier stores the plan on the chip through software. A phone holds up to 8 eSIM profiles at once. You switch plans without touching any hardware.
HelloRoam eSIM activation takes about 5 minutes. Buy a plan, scan the QR code from your confirmation email, and your eSIM downloads automatically. On iPhone, go to Settings, Cellular, then Add eSIM. On Android, go to Settings, Network, then SIM manager. Connect to WiFi before you start for the fastest setup.
Most modern phones support dual SIM mode, letting you run an eSIM and a physical SIM at the same time. Keep your home number on the physical SIM for calls while your HelloRoam travel eSIM handles data abroad. Switch between lines anytime in your phone settings. Check your device's specs to confirm dual SIM support.
iPhones from XS onward (released in 2018 or later), Google Pixel 3 and newer, and Samsung Galaxy S20 and newer all support eSIM. Most phones released after 2019 include eSIM support. Older budget models and some carrier-locked variants do not. Use the HelloRoam device compatibility checker to confirm your specific model.
An eSIM is not transferable to another phone once installed. To move to a new device, remove the profile from your old phone and contact HelloRoam to arrange a new plan for the replacement. Travel eSIMs tie to the device they were installed on, so always save your QR code and activation details as a backup.
eSIMs are more secure than physical SIM cards because they cannot be physically removed from your device. A thief on the subway in New York cannot steal your SIM. eSIMs use the same encryption as physical SIMs, and Face ID or fingerprint locks the profile. Carriers report that SIM-swapping attacks are far harder to execute on an eSIM than on a removable card.
HelloRoam eSIM plans cost up to 90% less than standard carrier plans from AT&T International Day Pass or Verizon TravelPass, as of March 2026. You buy a local data plan before you leave home, scan a QR code, and it activates when you land. No SIM swaps, no hunting for a phone shop at the airport.
Most phones store between 5 and 10 eSIM profiles, but only 1 or 2 can be active at a time. iPhone 15 and 16 models hold up to 8 stored profiles with 2 active simultaneously. This is handy for frequent travelers who want ready-to-go eSIMs for trips to Japan, Mexico, or the UK stored and waiting.
WiFi is required to download and install your eSIM profile the first time. The download takes about 2 minutes on a fast connection. Once installed, many HelloRoam plans activate automatically when your phone detects the local carrier network at your destination. Download your plan at home before your flight to skip any setup on arrival.
Your eSIM profile sits on a secure chip inside the phone and survives a dead battery. Once you charge and restart the phone, the eSIM works normally again. If your phone suffers major damage, contact HelloRoam support within 24 hours. The team deactivates the old profile and arranges a new one for your replacement device.
An eSIM chip measures roughly 3mm x 2.5mm, about one-third the size of a nano-SIM at 12.3mm x 8.8mm. It is permanently soldered onto your phone's motherboard, so you never see or handle it. That freed-up space lets manufacturers fit larger batteries or extra antenna hardware.
The eSIM chip inside your phone lasts as long as the device itself and does not expire. Travel data plans have a set validity window, typically 7 to 30 days, and end when the time runs out or the data is used up, whichever comes first. Purchase a new plan from HelloRoam once your current one expires.
