Rwanda has two main mobile carriers: MTN Rwanda and Airtel Rwanda. Both operate 4G LTE in Kigali and are expanding coverage across the country. Rwanda has invested heavily in digital infrastructure as part of its Vision 2050 development goals, resulting in better mobile connectivity than many African neighbors.
Kigali, one of Africa's cleanest and most organised capitals, has solid 4G coverage throughout the city. Kigali International Airport (KGL), the city centre, Kimihurura, and main commercial areas are all well covered. MTN Rwanda holds the larger network with wider provincial reach.
Airtel Rwanda is part of Bharti Airtel's Africa operations and competes strongly in Kigali and urban areas with competitive pricing and reliable 4G.
Volcanoes National Park in northwestern Rwanda, famous for mountain gorilla trekking, has very limited mobile coverage. Ruhengeri (Musanze) town nearby has some signal, but the park's forest trails and gorilla habitats have no coverage. Download your gorilla permit details, lodge directions, and contact information before leaving Musanze.
Nyungwe Forest National Park in southwestern Rwanda, home to chimpanzees and a forest canopy walk, also has minimal coverage inside the park. Gisenyi on Lake Kivu has 4G in the main town. Lake Kivu's scenic shores have coverage in larger towns. Australian travellers should confirm their handset is unlocked and supports the local network bands.
