Puerto Rico is a US territory and operates on the same mobile bands as the continental United States. Three carriers provide coverage: T-Mobile Puerto Rico, AT&T Puerto Rico, and Claro (América Móvil's Caribbean brand). US travellers with major domestic carriers including T-Mobile, AT&T, and Verizon may use their domestic plans in Puerto Rico at no extra charge, depending on their plan terms. Non-US travellers benefit from a HelloRoam eSIM for straightforward flat-rate data.
T-Mobile has the most extensive network in Puerto Rico, with strong 4G LTE coverage across San Juan, Ponce, Mayaguez, and the island's highway network. Hurricane Maria in 2017 damaged significant infrastructure, and T-Mobile led the rebuilding effort, resulting in a modernized network. 5G is available in San Juan and other urban areas.
AT&T Puerto Rico has solid coverage in San Juan and the main tourist and business areas. Coverage extends to most of the island on 4G LTE. Claro serves both mobile and fixed-line customers and has coverage across the island, including parts of the mountainous interior where US carriers are weaker.
El Yunque National Rainforest has coverage at the visitor centre and lower trails, but the deep interior trails and summit areas have very weak or no signal. Culebra and Vieques, the two main outer islands, have coverage in their town centers but weak signal in remote beaches and interiors. Australian travellers should confirm their handset is unlocked and supports the local network bands.
