Mexico City sits at 2,240m altitude and has a mild climate year-round. The best months are November through April, the dry season. Temperatures stay between 12C and 22C. The air is clearest and the city's smog is at its lowest during the dry months. The Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) celebrations on November 1 and 2 are among the most authentic in Mexico. The historic cemeteries of Mixquic and the Zocalo parade draw visitors and locals together in one of Mexico's most moving cultural events. March is pleasant with the spring light. The summer wet season runs June through September. Afternoon rains fall almost daily, usually clearing by evening. June and July also see increased smog on days without rain. The rains keep the parks and Chapultepec forest intensely green. The Grito de Independencia (Mexican Independence Day) on September 15 fills the Zocalo with hundreds of thousands of people for the midnight presidential shout from the National Palace balcony.
